The Effect Of Metacognitive Strategy Training On Critical Reading Ability., Jacqueline Means Parson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The ability to read materially critically is recognized as a goal of educators. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of training metacognitive strategies on critical reading ability. Critical reading was defined as the ability to judge or evaluate written materials and to compare them against some norm or standard. Metacognitive strategies encourage a conscious awareness of and/or control over one's own mental processes. A review of literature indicated that past researchers had considered critical reading as a distinct skill area, but more recently, educators have begun to recognize it as a part of the overall comprehension …

One hundred fifty first-semester calculus students, identified by an algebra/trigonometry pretest as requiring trigonometry remediation, served as subjects for Experiment I. As measures of f-d/i, the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) and The Miniaturized Rod and Frame Test (MRFT) were administered to the subjects, who were apportioned into six experimental groups, representing three …

The Influence Of Federal Administrative Trends On The Budgetary Processes Of Nigeria’S Federal Universities., Iliya Wambi Samaila

Dissertations (Pre-2016)

The proliferation of university educational demand in Nigeria occurred as a result of the oil boom and the subsequent creation of nineteen states. In 1974, Ibadan and Lagos Universities were the only federal universities; in 1976 seven more universities were created. The sudden increase, from two in 1974 to thirteen federal universities in 1976, necessitated the adoption of the formula funding model, which was perceived as being capable of allocating resources to all similar academic programs in the institutions. The thirteen federal universities were used in the study. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the applicability outcome of …

The understanding of children's abilities to express affect in drawings of the human figure has clinical and developmental significance, yet is an area that until recently has received relatively minimal research attention. The present study investigated the abilities of child psychologists, graduate psychology students, and non-mental health raters to correctly identify the attempts of 72 kindergarten, second, fourth, sixth, eighth, and tenth-grade students to depict six common affective expressions in human figure drawings. The affective expressions were: happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, surprise, and fear. Thirty-six adult raters (18 female; 18 male) reviewed 216 drawings, identified the perceived affective expression, and …

Evaluating The Effect Of Project H.O.P.E.: An After-School Study Hall, Eugene Joseph Schmidt

All Graduate Projects

The effectiveness of Project HOPE, an acronym for Helping Our People Educationally, was tested to determine if improved academic achievement would result from an after-school study hall. Intended for ninth grade students that fall behind because of uncompleted daily work and missed assignments, Project HOPE was created to give students "a last chance." It was thought that daily work scores would rise and that students would realize an overall increase in their final course grades. The actual experiment was run from November 19, 1984 until January 17, 1985. The experimental group was the writer's tenth grade English class. Despite improvements …
