Comparative Analysis Of The Relative Similarities And Differences In The Educational Systems Of United States And South Africa Facilitating Or Impeding Educational Mobility, A'Jamal-Rashad Byndon

Student Work

A crucial role of education is the function of transmitting culture and prepare the young for a vocation and assuming a productive role in a social system. In some cultures, education provides means for earning a living. For example, education to many Africans (Foster:1980), is viewed in very pragmatic and instrumental terms. The reason for going to school is necessary to obtain suitable employment. Education as a liberal framework is foreign to most Africans.

What Ever Happened To Saint Vincent's College?, Francis J. Weber

Vincentian Studies

Events and motives surrounding the 1910 closure of Saint Vincent’s College are reconstructed. Saint Vincent’s was the educational leader of Los Angeles; Bishop Thomas J. Conaty wanted to make it into a university without considering its financial support. To force the Vincentians to assume this greater responsibility, he invited the Jesuits into the diocese. When the Jesuits’ Santa Clara College burned, relocation to Los Angles was proposed. Declaring there was no room for two Catholic colleges, and for other reasons, the Vincentians planned to cede theirs to the Jesuits. After unexpected developments, the Jesuits were unable to continue Saint Vincent’s …

Education For The Gifted/Talented Student At Bellevue East High School., Wendell R. Mcconnaha Mar 1985

Education For The Gifted/Talented Student At Bellevue East High School., Wendell R. Mcconnaha

Student Work

Education of the gifted/talented child in the United States is not a recent innovation. In 1635, the Boston Latin, Grammar School was established for intellectually gifted children. This was a year prior to the opening of Harvard University. By the late nineteenth century, universal public schools nurtured the principle of a single school for all children, which supposedly upheld the American interpretation of equality for all. In the early twentieth century, multiple tracking programs were incorporated by which students were afforded enrichment without early acceleration, and, until after World War II, emphasis remained on enrichment.

The 'Delusion Of Comprehension' Phenomena In Young Children: An Instructional Approach To Promoting Listening Comprehension Monitoring Capabilities In Grade Three Children, Darlene Judith Elliott-Faust Jan 1985

The 'Delusion Of Comprehension' Phenomena In Young Children: An Instructional Approach To Promoting Listening Comprehension Monitoring Capabilities In Grade Three Children, Darlene Judith Elliott-Faust

Digitized Theses

Markman (1979) reported that grade three children are inefficient at detecting inconsistencies in orally presented passages, indicating inefficient listening comprehension monitoring skills. Providing young children with an appropriate standard for evaluating their listening comprehension is marginally helpful (Markman & Gorin, 1981). The focus of this research was on designing an instructional program for grade three children to promote the acquisition and maintenance of efficient listening comprehension monitoring. Based on a model of metacognition and pilot work, the following strategies were hypothesized to be critical in detecting inconsistencies in oral passages: (1) a comparison strategy which involves comparing incoming sentences to …

Cognitive Processing Of Blissymbols By Normal Adults, William Steven Yovetich Jan 1985

Cognitive Processing Of Blissymbols By Normal Adults, William Steven Yovetich

Digitized Theses

Proposed by their inventor as an international visual-symbolic language, Blissymbols gained acceptance as a communication system for nonvocal handicapped populations. However, basic research has not kept pace with the rapid increase in application. The purpose of this thesis was to study the cognitive processing of Blissymbols to determine (a) the degree to which they represent their word referents, (b) the effect of this representativeness on learning and memory, and (c) the extent to which Blissymbols are processed like pictures and thereby concretize abstract concepts. The studies, conducted within the framework of Paivio's (1971) dual coding theory, began with collecting and …

09. Ethical Inquiry: Instructional Manual To Accompany Lisa, Matthew Lipman, Ann Margaret Sharp

Middle School Curriculum

The aim of this program is to provide students with the tools they need to deliberate well about ethical issues. These tools include anticipating consequences, taking all the circumstances into account, giving good reasons, universalizing, being consistent, and projecting ideals of the people they would like to be and the world they would like to live in. In addition to the use of such tools, good ethical inquiry also involves an understanding of metaphysical, ethical, social, and aesthetic concepts. For this reasons, ETHICAL INQUIRY provides a host of introductions to concepts such as self, time, personhood, reciprocity, and freedom, as …

The Design Of An Internal Resource Allocation Model For Use In Higher Education, Ann Clark Jan 1985

The Design Of An Internal Resource Allocation Model For Use In Higher Education, Ann Clark

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A computer model has been developed for the purpose of allocating funds, by department, within a university. This model categorizes each class as one of three types -- lecture, problem solving, or laboratory. A standard class size is assigned to each type -- 40, 25, and 10 respectively. Combining the previous years head count for each class with the credit-hour value of each class, a faculty position count for every department is generated.

Administrative positions, staff positions, operating expense, and operating capital funds are calculated using various combinations of factors involving student credit hours, faculty positions, and class type. Factors …

The Interaction Of Conceptual Tempo And Modeling On Motor Performance (Learning Style)., Shirley Devard Brown Jan 1985

The Interaction Of Conceptual Tempo And Modeling On Motor Performance (Learning Style)., Shirley Devard Brown

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This experiment was designed to examine the effects of conceptual tempo and modeling on performance of a serial motor task. There were 48 subjects, 10- and 11-years old males and females, classified as impulsive or reflective. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of three modeling groups or a control group. The modeling strategies included: silent-model, verbal-model and verbal-model with self-instruction. The task was a motor skill obstacle course in which both speed and errors were scored. Data were analyzed by a 2 x 4 (Cognitive Style x Model Type) MANOVA with the number of trials to criterion, the average number …

The Effects Of Performance Standards On Behavior Patterns And Motor Skill Achievement In Children (Goals, Time-On-Task)., Rosaland Veatrice Edwards Jan 1985

The Effects Of Performance Standards On Behavior Patterns And Motor Skill Achievement In Children (Goals, Time-On-Task)., Rosaland Veatrice Edwards

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effect of individual performance standards on the relationship between selected process variables and achievement for students in elementary physical education classes was investigated. The subjects were 78 fourth grade and 80 fifth grade students from eight classes in two elementary schools. Two fourth and fifth grades received standards and two fourth and fifth grades did not. A one week experimental teaching unit was used. A Solomon 4-group design was used in an effort to determine if there was a pretest effect. The data were analyzed in a Treatment (standard-no standard) x Pre (pre-no pretest) x sex (male-female) x grade …
