Explicit Instruction In Story Structure: Effects On Preschoolers' Listening Comprehension (Story Grammar)., Joanne L. Ratliff

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the present study was to examine whether instruction in story structure improved preschoolers' comprehension of stories. Preschool children were pretested on: (a) oral story production, (b) story rule knowledge (structural elements), (c) free recall of a story, and (d) probed recall. Students who were identified as less skilled by these four measures were randomly assigned to one of three groups: instruction, story, or control. The instruction group received two weeks of explicit instruction in story structure based on a story rule format. The story group listened to the same rule format. The story group listened to the …

The Effect Of Parental Aggression On Children's Cognitive Development, Susan Elizabeth Craig Jan 1986

The Effect Of Parental Aggression On Children's Cognitive Development, Susan Elizabeth Craig

Doctoral Dissertations

The study investigated the relationship between parental aggression and children's cognitive development. Parental aggression was studied in terms of both verbal aggression and use of physical force. Indexes developed from form N of the Conflict Tactics Scales (Straus, 1979) were used to measure both variables at three levels: low, middle and high. The dependent variables were measures of the child's (A) cognitive style, (B) cognitive functioning and (C) self-esteem.

Previous research indicates a relationship between abuse and cognitive development: Ackly (1977), Elmer (1967), Martin (1979). A methodological limitation of these studies is that they used samples of children previously identified …

Doctoral Dissertations

The present study is an integrative study designed to explore the nature of student difficulties within the context of a first semester college calculus course. The techniques of error analysis were used to identify and categorize the student difficulties. Insights gained from this categorization served as the basis for the design and development of calculus grader preparation materials implemented with a subgroup of undergraduate calculus graders. These grader preparation materials emphasized grader diagnosis of student difficulties and student reflection on errors and process. Current preparation procedures served as the control on the basis of which comparisons and evaluations were made. …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Members of three baseball teams for 13-to-14-year-olds and four teams for 10-to-12-year olds participated in a season-long study of their skills, knowledge base, and game performance. Subjects were weighed, height measured, skill tested at base running speed and throwing for distance and accuracy, game performance coded (position, control of ball, correctness of decision as to play to make, and proper execution of that play), and took a multiple-choice baseball test. Coaches supplied batting averages, and ranked their players into three levels (best, medium, and poorest players). As the lowest ranked players generally got little playing time (the league had no …

The Relationship Between Interaction Time And Reading And Math Achievement For Chapter I Students Using Computer-Assisted Instruction In Grades Three, Four And Five., Betty Josephine Conaway Archambeault

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The role of computer technology, particularly computer-assisted instruction, in the educational delivery system has steadily increased over the last decade. Although the largest number of CAI programs can be categorized as drill and practice, an increasing number of high quality simulation and tutorial programs are becoming available. The interactive nature of CAI is supported by the learning theories of Piaget, Gagne, and other learning theorists. Research on the topic indicates that CAI has a generally positive effect on student achievement and fosters positive attitudes among students and instructors toward the learning environment. This research study had two goals. The first …

Linear Measurement: A Prevocational Skills Curriculum Based On The Brigance Inventory Of Essential Skills, Linda Jane Kittle

All Graduate Projects

Student progress toward an educational goal can be enhanced by the use of a curriculum containing both assessment and instruction. This project is such a curriculum based on the linear measurement items of the Brigance Inventory of Essential Skills. The careful sequencing and prevocational nature of this curriculum, along with its record-keeping forms, make it especially useful for special education. It is also available as a data disk for use with Apple microcomputers.

The Feldman Method Of Art Criticism: Is It Adequate For The Socially Concerned Art Educator?, Tom Anderson Jan 1986

The Feldman Method Of Art Criticism: Is It Adequate For The Socially Concerned Art Educator?, Tom Anderson

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The structure and inherent values of the Feldman (1981) method of art criticism are debated in some art education circles. On one hand it is argued that the Feldman method, because of its emphasis on formal analysis, lends itself more readily to analytical formalist criticism, and is thus not an adequate instrument for socially concerned art educators. The other side of the debate has it that the method is appropriate for socially contextual interpretation when applied by socially concerned art educators. My thesis is that Feldman's method is well suited for socially contextual criticism of aesthetic forms. I intend to …

Professional Networking In Art Education, Karen A. Hamblen Jan 1986

Professional Networking In Art Education, Karen A. Hamblen

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The social scientist provides three levels of analysis whereby the sociology of art educators can be examined: (1) statistical information, (2) formal organizational structures, and (3) informal, life-world experiences. Although the first two levels provide valuable information, it is proposed that it is within informal, life-world experiences that professional networking occurs and where the character of much of the field of art education is shaped. In this descriptive and analytical study, the sociology of art educators is examined as a function of networks of power and influence. The discussion is limited to art educators with PhD or EdD degrees who …

Socioeconomic Indicators Of Women's Status In Developing Countries, 1970–1980, Constantina Safilios-Rothschild

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

From 1970–1980, several conferences were held and publications produced regarding the need to improve data collection on indicators of women’s status, as well as a number of publications offering concrete proposals for such improvements. During this period, the disaggregation of statistics by sex has expanded in many countries and indicators, and such disaggregated statistics are presented with increased frequency in international data compiled by United Nations specialized organizations. In addition, two major sets of statistics on the status of women have appeared. These statistics on socioeconomic indicators of the status of women in developing countries include statistics on men as …

Public School Drug Searches: Toward Redefining Fourth Amendment "Reasonableness" To Include Individualized Suspicion, Jill I. Braverman Jan 1986

Public School Drug Searches: Toward Redefining Fourth Amendment "Reasonableness" To Include Individualized Suspicion, Jill I. Braverman

Fordham Urban Law Journal

Incidents of illegal drug use' and violent crime plague public school authorities across the nation. As narcotics and weapons appear on school campuses, school officials seek to conduct searches of students' lockers, property, and persons for contraband or prohibited weapons. Public school authorities justify their actions by stating that since the state requires children to attend school, the state retains a compelling interest, if not an affirmative duty, in ensuring that the school environment remain free of illegal substances which might present safety hazards to teachers or fellow students. The fourth amendment to the United States Constitution was adopted to …

Development Of Automatic And Effortful Processes In Memory Of Movement Location., Aharon Dayan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two experiments designed to assess whether location information about movement is automatically encoded in memory were conducted. In Experiment 1, two automaticity criteria were examined. The first stipulated that age differences are not exhibited in processing location information; and, the second stipulated that location information is encoded without intention and additional intention does not improve the quality of the encoding process. A third criteria was also examined: whether spatial cues from the environment (layout of testing area) improves the encoding of movement information. In Experiment 2, the automaticity criteria that practice has no effect was analyzed. In Experiment 1, 60 …

Machiavellian Interpersonal Orientation In The Principalship: Role Clarity, Work Satisfaction And Principal Characteristics., Judy Ann Hickman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the Machiavellian interpersonal orientation in the principalship in relation to perceptions of role clarity, satisfaction with multiple dimensions of the work context, and individual characteristics. The key focus was on how interpersonal orientation influences the way principals' "size up" their work situation. The Getzels and Guba social systems model (1957) and the Christie and Geis interaction model (1970) served as the theoretical basis for the study. An ex post factor research design was utilized in this study of 235 public school principals. Each principal responded to a research packet of measures. Factor analyses were computed for each …

The Relationship Between Teachers' Perceptions Of Principals' Job Performance, Teacher Job Satisfaction, Principal Influence And School Outcomes., John Aaron Jackson Jan 1986

The Relationship Between Teachers' Perceptions Of Principals' Job Performance, Teacher Job Satisfaction, Principal Influence And School Outcomes., John Aaron Jackson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated the relationship between principals' instructional leadership behavior and school effectiveness. In the conceptual model tested, certain school context variables, teachers' job satisfaction and teachers' willingness to accept principals' influence in the instructional realm, were viewed as mediating the relationship between principals' behavior and school outcomes. From this perspective, principals' instructional leadership behavior was seen as being indirectly related to school outcomes by its impact on these mediating variables. For the purposes of this study, teachers' job satisfaction, teachers, willingness to accept principals' professional advice and teachers' perceptions of principals' effectiveness as instructional leaders served as independent variables. …

Futuristic Education: Hopeful Realism, Marc Blosveren, Kay Long, Jacqueline Norcel, Robert Zwicker, Barbara Zuffa

Sacred Heart University Review

As educators we must look ahead if we want our students to survive, adapt, and prosper in the fast-changing world of the twenty first century. Educators must demonstrate a responsibility for the future. The proper attitude to develop is a philosophy of "hopeful realism." With hopeful realism a person has a clear appreciation of the issues and risks that lie ahead but also a recognition of the emerging solutions and opportunities. Hopeful realism teaches not for the computer but rather for how one can apply the knowledge and power gained by using that computer. It exemplifies values that will continue …

Learning How To Learn : A Phenomenological Investigation Of The Essential Structures Of Learning, Julie Wendorff Jan 1986

Learning How To Learn : A Phenomenological Investigation Of The Essential Structures Of Learning, Julie Wendorff

Honors Capstones

This paper is a philosophical investigation of the process of learning. The analysis of learning is a phenomenological one, using the science of essential structures of consciousness as a foundation for addressing the topic of ‘learning how to learn.’ This essay is not meant to be an empirical generalization, nor a data-supported research study. Rather, it is a personal mapping of a particular educational experience. In that respect, the writing of this paper is a fundamentally necessary and appropriate “capstone,” for engaging in this thought experiment has enabled me to more fully understand the importance of the four years that …

Recruitment And Retention Of Special Educators For Rural School Systems, Margie Oliver-Hay Jan 1986

Recruitment And Retention Of Special Educators For Rural School Systems, Margie Oliver-Hay

Theses and Dissertations

There is nothing new about teachers leaving their profession. Teacher turnover has always occurred. But when education loses its most experienced and mature teachers, there is cause for concern. When smaller rural districts lose their best teachers both in regular and special education teacher turnover may be a crises!

Recruitment and retention of special and regular educators is becoming an extremely serious problem for rural areas. Enrollments in college and in education departments are decreasing. Women, who once were the dominant force in the teaching ranks, are being attracted to other fields such as medicine, engineering, computer science, and law. …
