Americans expect a great deal of the public schools, trusting in the power of education to improve their lives and the lives of their children. One expectation is that the educational system will prepare students to become productive members of society.
Effectiveness Of The Decision Making Skills Unit In The Ralston Elementary Schools, Katherine J. Solomon
Effectiveness Of The Decision Making Skills Unit In The Ralston Elementary Schools, Katherine J. Solomon
Student Work
The counselor at the elementary school level has the opportunity to work with children during the critical period in which their self-concepts and life styles are being formulated and their basic attitudes toward others and society are emerging. Children at this developmental stage need contact with a person who listens, who understands, and who helps them to explore alternatives, clarify personal meanings, establish commitments, and mature in personal and social development (Dinkmeyer, 1973).

Professionalism In The Alaska Department Of Corrections: Education And Experience [Paper], Schafer E. N/A
Conference papers
A survey of Alaska corrections personnel reveals that employees in all classifications tend to have more than the minimum education or experience required for their positions. More than 75 percent of college-educated corrections personnel earned degrees and more than 40 percent acquired their experience outside Alaska. The advantages and disadvantages of hiring large numbers of employees whose education and experience were gained elsewhere are discussed in the context of the unique problems of correctional service delivery in so large and diverse a state.

An Alternative View Of Education For Deaf Children: Part I, Sue Livingston
An Alternative View Of Education For Deaf Children: Part I, Sue Livingston
Publications and Research
Quigley and Kretschmer (1982) asserted that the primary goal of education for deaf children should be literacy in English. This article presents an alternative view that there be two primary goals: (a) thinking and learning through the development of meaning-making and meaning-sharing capacities and (b) the acquisition of literacy in English. In this article, the first of these goals is viewed as the more fundamental since it facilitates the acquisition of knowledge while it simultaneously serves as the prerequisite for the acquisition of literacy in English. Because neither direct language instruction nor the exclusive use of English in sign will …
Communication Tendencies Of Senior Dental Students., David G. Dunning, Brian M. Lange
Communication Tendencies Of Senior Dental Students., David G. Dunning, Brian M. Lange
Journal Articles: College of Dentistry
Although the importance of dentist-patient communication is generally recognized, the dental literature does not specify what interpersonal behaviors can be used as a basis for evaluating dental students' communication skills. A set of behaviors based on clinical observations is described, and an evaluation of 25 senior students' behavioral skills is presented. Students often did not: (1) spend much time orienting patients before beginning treatment; (2) update medical histories; (3) ask patients if they had any questions before beginning treatment; (4) explain the operation and use of equipment; (5) forewarn patients about uncomfortable procedures; (6) attend to signs of patient discomfort; …

Humans And Other Animals: A Biological And Ethical Perspective, Ashley Montagu
Humans And Other Animals: A Biological And Ethical Perspective, Ashley Montagu
Attitudes Towards Animals Collection
What I have been hoping to do in this talk is to provide the scientific basis for the biological kinship of humans with other animals in particular and the whole of nature in general, and to show that the ethical perspective to which such a demonstration leads is inherent in the very nature of nature, that cooperation, love, not conflict and aggression, as we have long been led to believe, is the dominant principle by which living creatures are designed to live with each other. It was not Darwin, but the muscular Darwinists, like Herbert Spencer, who wasn't a biologist …
An Examination Of Individual Differences In Children's Responding To Experiences Of Failure, Rhonda Stillman Gilby
An Examination Of Individual Differences In Children's Responding To Experiences Of Failure, Rhonda Stillman Gilby
Digitized Theses
The purpose of the present investigation was to examine individual differences in children's responding to an achievement-oriented testing situation including a failure experience. One hundred fifth and sixth graders participated in the three sessions of the study. During two of these sessions, failure experiences were programmed. The children completed personality measures assessing test anxiety, depression, locus of control and self-concept, school grades and teacher ratings were collected, measures of performance change following a failure were taken and ratings of task focus, causal attributions for failure, task enjoyment, performance evaluation and future expectancies were obtained. The study allowed for an examination …

Use Of The Culture - General Assimilator In Intercultural Training (Cross-Cultural, Multi-Cultural), Darrell Lee Broaddus
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the use of the first Culture-General Assimilator for intercultural training. The purpose of the study was to determine if the instrument under study based on a culture-general rather than culture-specific approach could actually facilitate more effective interaction with the culturally different. To test the effectiveness of the experimental training, 102 undergraduates from a socialPsychology class at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, were assigned to either a treatment or control group on the basis of a coin flip. The training was extended over seven one-hour-and-twenty-minute sessions and included practice on nine less difficult critical incidents and the related …
A Creation Of Pedagogical Children's Literature That Addresses Sexual Abuse And Child Abuse In A Bilingual Format, Karen J. Hernandez
A Creation Of Pedagogical Children's Literature That Addresses Sexual Abuse And Child Abuse In A Bilingual Format, Karen J. Hernandez
All Graduate Projects
The purpose was to create a series of stories for children that deal with sexual and child abuse. The stories were written in Spanish and English. Special attention was given to make them relative to the Hispanic culture. Background research supported the existence of sexual and child abuse. Symptoms were listed and the rights and responsibilities of teachers to report suspected cases were identified. The use of creative fiction and bibliotherapy was suggested for prevention programs in an elementary curriculum.
Delayed Onset Of Muscle Soreness: Creatine Kinase As A Marker For Tissue Damage (Pgf(2a) Metabolite)., John Douglas Boatwright
Delayed Onset Of Muscle Soreness: Creatine Kinase As A Marker For Tissue Damage (Pgf(2a) Metabolite)., John Douglas Boatwright
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Twenty college age males participated in a weight-lifting experiment, 3 sets of 10 repetitions at 70% 1RM for the squat, to examine the time courses between creatine phosphokinase (CPK), prostaglandin F(,2) alpha metabolite (PGF(,2a) met) and ratings of perceived soreness (RPS). Both groups, aspirin (n = 10) and placebo (n = 10), received medication (3g/day) for four consecutive days, starting 1 day prior to workout. Ratings of soreness and blood samples were taken pre- and immediately post-exercise, and at 24 h intervals for 3 days after exercise. There was no significant difference (p < 0.05) between the groups for CPK and RPS across time, but the prostaglandins were significantly different (p < 0.01) at all time intervals between groups. Changes seen across time were quadratic for all variables. The 24 h prostaglandin level was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than the pre-, post-exercise and 72 h levels, but not significantly different from the 48 h level. Ratings of soreness were not significantly different (p < 0.05) at the 24 and 48 h intervals, but both were significantly higher than at all other time intervals. The mean CPK levels at 24 and 48 h were not significantly different (p < 0.05), but the 24 h CPK level was significantly higher (p < 0.05) from the other time intervals. There was a significant correlation (p < 0.01) between the time courses of CPK and RPS. It was concluded that CPK can be used as a marker for tissue damage and that prostaglandins did not influence the subjects' perception of muscle soreness or the release or uptake of CPK.

A Study Of Experiences Provided In The Home Environment Associated With Accelerated Reading Abilities As Reported By Parents Of Intellectually Superior Preschoolers., Jeanne Marie Laporte Burns
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to look beyond the general effect that intelligence and environment have upon the development of reading and investigate (a) differences in how accelerated readers and nonreaders perform on written language tasks and (b) differences in written language experiences provided in the home environment, as reported by parents, associated with the development of accelerated reading abilities. Due to the broadness of the term written language, only four aspects of written language were examined (i.e., awareness of concepts about print, awareness of print in the environment, awareness of letter/sound correspondences in words--invented spelling, and awareness during …

Summer Time Allocation In Vocational Agriculture Programs In The United States (12-Month Programs, Extended Contract)., Susan Skripac Camp
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine what activities vocational agriculture teachers in the United States believed should be a part of their summer programs and what they actually did during the summer of 1983. Three instruments were used to collect data for this study: a two-page questionnaire to state supervisors of agricultural education to determine what statewide activities were scheduled for teacher participation, a three-page questionnaire to 227 vocational agriculture teachers to gather program and teacher information and to determine what the teachers believed should be accomplished during their summer program, and a one-page bi-weekly summary to be …

An Investigation Of The Public High School Band Programs Of A Large City In Southeast Louisiana, Including Attitudes Of Senior Band Students., Earl Jacob Fox Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The major purpose of this study was to investigate the public high school band programs of a large city in southeast Louisiana. A secondary purpose was to gather attitudes of senior band students toward their respective programs. Anonymity for the school district studied was guaranteed through a contractual agreement signed with the local school board. Data for the investigation were collected through the use of two original questionnaires devised to gather information from band directors and senior band members. Fourteen instrumental teachers participated in this study along with one hundred seventy-six students. Results from this study reveal that the majority …
The Contextual Interference Effect In Learning An Open Motor Skill (Random Practice, Blocked Practice)., Sinah Louise Goode
The Contextual Interference Effect In Learning An Open Motor Skill (Random Practice, Blocked Practice)., Sinah Louise Goode
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this series of experiments was to assess contextual interference effects for novices learning an open skill. Previous research has found that a random practice schedule as opposed to a blocked or repetitious schedule of practice facilitates retention and transfer in the learning of motor skills. The task required female subjects to throw a ball at a target to coincide the arrival of a trackway of light with the arrival of the ball. All subjects were inexperienced in throwing and open sport skills. Experiment 1 was designed to test contextual interference results on novices learning an open skill …

This study was conducted to determine the effect of instruction in a metacognitive self-monitoring strategy on functional reading ability of 15- and 16-year-old learning disabled students. Metacognitive strategy training has been shown to be effective with older or better readers when used with content or narrative materials This study was unique in that the metacognitive self-monitoring instruction was provided utilizing functional or everyday reading materials. The study, which consisted of a pretest, eight periods of instruction, a posttest and a delayed test was conducted with 31 high school students indentified as having specific learning disabilities. The students were randomly assigned …
The Effect Of Educational Technology Variables On Elementary Education Student Achievement (Instructional Materials, Educational Media)., Deborah Scruggs Miller
The Effect Of Educational Technology Variables On Elementary Education Student Achievement (Instructional Materials, Educational Media)., Deborah Scruggs Miller
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine whether educational technology variables differentiate between "effective" and "ineffective" elementary schools. It was hypothesized that "effective schools" use educational media in instruction more frequently than "ineffective schools". It was also expected that "effective schools" use educational media in qualitatively superior ways to "ineffective schools". In addition, it was predicted that "effective schools" would have better prepared teachers in educational media and teachers with more years of teaching experience than "ineffective schools". The sample consisted of fourteen elementary schools located in 12 school districts throughout Louisiana. Each school was determined to be either …
