Twenty eight third graders with poor reading and language abilities were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Communicative Reading Strategies (CRS) were employed with the experimental group. CRS treats reading as an integrated language process. Techniques were used such as: (1) providing orienting information, (2) clarifying the author's intention, (3) reducing the linguistic complexity of the text, (4) reiterating and conjoining ideas into complex propositions, and (5) …

Econometric Techniques Applied To The Relationship Between Education And Gnp, Diane S. Sly Jan 1989

Econometric Techniques Applied To The Relationship Between Education And Gnp, Diane S. Sly

Honors Capstones

The goal of this paper was to study the role of government expenditures on education. Data gathered on states’ GNP and their educational budgets were statistically analyzed. Laboratory work, in the analysis of the data, was performed on Superwylbur’s SAS package. Procedures such as the econometric technique of Wiener-Granger’s Causality testing were also implemented. The major finding was that the direction of causation was not in the direction that most studies concluded, ED->GNP. The results showed causation from GNP->ED. The study was limited to six states due to time and knowledge. Readers should not be discouraged by the …

Equal Protection- The Social Dimension Of European Community Law, T. Koopmans Jan 1989

Equal Protection- The Social Dimension Of European Community Law, T. Koopmans

Michigan Journal of International Law

There are two reasons for drawing attention to the social dimension of European Community law. First, the EEC treaty comprises different provisions on social policy whose importance is consistently underestimated: the treaty is often considered as merely establishing a "common market" and as only concerning economic problems. This approach is prominent in the United States, where the business world is primarily interested in trade with, and within, the common market, and where much literature is devoted to this subject. Second, the social provisions of the EEC treaty have given rise to an interesting evolution in the case law of the …

Social Learning Therapy For Families With Aggressive Boys: Individual Family Versus Parent-Group Treatment, H. Alan Reid

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effectiveness of a time-limited, parent group therapy model for reducing aggressive and disruptive behavior in seven- to thirteen-year-old boys. Comparative differences between an individual counseling versus a parent group implementation of a social learning family counseling model were studied. Twenty families completed the parent group treatment program offered by the Family Therapy Project at Indiana State University. These families completed pre- and post-treatment assessments in order to determine treatment gains in the areas of child behavior, family environment/relationships, family problem-solving abilities, and marital adjustment/satisfaction. These treatment results were then statistically compared using an analysis of covariance …

The Church, The State, And The Eha: Educating The Handicapped In Light Of The Establishment Clause, Thomas F. Guernsey, M. Grey Sweeney Jan 1989

The Church, The State, And The Eha: Educating The Handicapped In Light Of The Establishment Clause, Thomas F. Guernsey, M. Grey Sweeney

Law Faculty Publications

All parents have the basic right to guide the educational future of their children. Prior to the 1970s, however, it was not unusual for the parents of a handicapped child to find it difficult, if not impossible, to provide their child with a genuine opportunity to learn. Despite the Supreme Court's proclamation in 1954 that education, "where the state has undertaken to provide it, is a right which must be made available to all on equal terms," handicapped children were routinely excluded from public education or segregated within it. Congress, responding to the increasingly vocal call for equal education, took …

The Effects Of Freewriting On High School Students’ Attitudes Toward Writing, Dana L. Thomas Jan 1989

The Effects Of Freewriting On High School Students’ Attitudes Toward Writing, Dana L. Thomas

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper investigates the hypothesis that freewriting, when used as part of the writing process, will lead to more positive attitudes toward writing in a sample of advanced tenth grade students. An additional issue focuses on the level of positive attitudes of males when compared to females. Two intact classrooms taught by one teacher wrote weekly papers. The experimental group wrote freely, while the control group was restricted in topic choice, length and form of their writing. The experimental group received positive comments on the content of their writing, but the control group received standard error corrections on their writing. …

The Effect Of Personal Journals On Fourth-Grade Students' Attitudes Toward Reading And Writing., Nancy B. Cothern

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between belief systems and attitudes toward reading and writing and the effect of personal journal writing on those attitudes and beliefs. By combining three established areas of research (the affective component of attitude, the reading-writing relationship, and the self-defining nature of personal narrative), the use of personal journals was tested as an effective means for contributing to the development of positive attitudes. Subjects were 95 fourth graders enrolled in four intact classes which were randomly assigned to experimental or control conditions Pre-/post-assessments included administration of reading and writing attitude scales …

The primary purpose of this study was to explore the effects of the use of the aesthetic and efferent stances in response to literature. Subjects included 43 fourth graders, 47 sixth graders, and 40 eighth graders who were reading on-grade level or above. All subjects read the same three short stories, completed written free responses to each, and rated the stories. Responses were analyzed for reader stance, level of understanding reached, and the elements of the responses in terms of content categories. Two-way analysis of variances revealed significant main effects for stance and grade on the dependent variable, level of …

Children's Ability To Utilize The Mnemonic Keyword Method: An Educational Application Within Fourth-Grade Classrooms., Nancy Lynn Williams Jan 1989

Children's Ability To Utilize The Mnemonic Keyword Method: An Educational Application Within Fourth-Grade Classrooms., Nancy Lynn Williams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Research has shown that the mnemonic keyword method is an effective study strategy under controlled laboratory-type situations with subjects learning decontextualized facts. Very few studies have actually tested the mnemonic keyword method within the context of a normal fourth grade classroom and learning situation. The purpose of this study, then, was to demonstrate the viability of the mnemonic keyword method as a study strategy when compared to notetaking/outlining, a common study strategy recommended by fourth grade curricula. The subjects were 106 fourth graders enrolled in four classes at a rural elementary school. Data were collected over a four week period …

The Lactate Threshold And Carbon Dioxide Flow To The Lung As Predictors Of Ventilation During Exercise., Becky Anne Baker Jan 1989

The Lactate Threshold And Carbon Dioxide Flow To The Lung As Predictors Of Ventilation During Exercise., Becky Anne Baker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Three studies were performed to determine the relationship between blood lactate, CO$\sb2$ flow to the lung, and ventilation during exercise. First, the method of determining the lactate threshold by use of log-log and semilog transformations developed by Beaver and his colleagues was modified to provide an objective method of determining the threshold which resulted in a significantly better fit (p $<$.05) of the log-log model to the data. Second, to test the theory that the increase in CO$\sb2$ flow to the lung due to bicarbonate buffering of H+ from lactic acid causes the rise in ventilation out of proportion to VO$\sb2$ at the ventilatory threshold, the lactate thresholds of these subjects were used to predict their ventilatory thresholds. The lactate threshold determined by the modified log-log model/method was a poor predictor with an insignificant relationship between the lactate and ventilatory thresholds (p $>$.05). In the third study, six subjects were tested during 4 sessions to determine the relationship between ventilation and CO$\sb2$ flow to the lung during exercise and also during rest and exercise while CO$\sb2$ was being inhaled. This relationship …

Factors Associated With The Production Of Export Quality Fruit By Small Banana Farmers Of The Rio Grande Valley, Portland, Jamaica., Terrence W. Thomas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The study was aimed at determining the relationship between two production variables--technology use, and production of export quality fruit--of small banana farmers in the Rio Grande Valley, Jamaica and selected socioeconomic, personal characteristic and opinion variables, assessing the amount of variance in production explained by the latter, and identifying variables that moderate or mediate the relationship between production variables. The target population was 120 farmers selling bananas to a public boxing plant. A random sample of non-banana farmers was used as a cross-validation check to make inferences to all farmers. Farmers were personally interviewed using a pretested schedule. Stepwise multiple …
