Student Work
Conventional wisdom maintains that international educational exchanges provide unquestionable benefits to participating students. Improved ability to speak the language of the host-country and increased understanding and appreciation of the culture and people of the host country are examples of those benefits. Host institutions are thought to benefit financially. They also benefit by the intercultural experience that international students offer the host community. The result has been a proliferation of programs developed over the last few decades by American colleges and universities for international students desiring to study English and American culture. Many of these programs occur during the summer. A …

The New Generation Of Computer Literacy, J. Paul Myers Jr.
The New Generation Of Computer Literacy, J. Paul Myers Jr.
Computer Science Faculty Research
A tremendous mismatch is developing between two of the most critical components of any computer literacy course: the textbooks and the students. We are encountering a "new generation" of students (literally as well as figuratively!) who are much better acquainted with computer usage than their earlier counterparts. Yet many textbooks with increasing emphasis in those same computer tools continue to appear. There are signs of a coming change in that a few authors and publishers apparently are becoming aware of the need for innovations in texts for non-scientists. These textbooks open the door for a new orientation to principles in …

Johannes Knudsen As An Educator: A Conversation With Harry Jensen, Thorvald Hansen
Johannes Knudsen As An Educator: A Conversation With Harry Jensen, Thorvald Hansen
The Bridge
In the fall of 1927 Johannes Knudsen began what was to be a lifelong teaching career. For the next eight years he was to teach at Grand View College and in the theological seminary there. He taught courses in Danish as well as in Scandinavian literature. In the Seminary his specialty was Church History. It was far from his first contact with Grand View. He had lived there as a youth, from 1912 until 1915, while his father was president of that institution. Later he attended the high school department there. In 1920, when his parents returned to Denmark, he …

Student Work
Americans expect a great deal of the public schools, trusting in the power of education to improve their lives and the lives of their children. One expectation is that the educational system will prepare students to become productive members of society.

The Rorschach Response Patterns And Social-Emotional Functioning Of Learning-Disabled Children And Adolescents, Thomas L. Willette
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to (a) describe the social-emotional functioning of Learning Disabled (LD) children and adolescents and (b) to describe the relationship between social-emotional functioning and reading ability of LD. Thirty subjects aged 9 to 16 years who qualified for a LD placement were administered the Rorschach Ink Blot test, using Exner's scoring system, and the Woodcock Reading Mastery Tests. Exner's normative group was used as a comparison group to determine if the LD's Rorschach scores were substantially different from a non-Learning Disabled (NLD) group. Correlations were calculated between Rorschach scores and scores of the Woodcock Reading …

Gender Influences: Reading Student Texts, Donnalee Rubin
Gender Influences: Reading Student Texts, Donnalee Rubin
Doctoral Dissertations
This project examines how the findings of reader-response theorists and feminist theorists apply to the circumstance of teachers reading student texts. Although the overwhelming weight of theoretical evidence suggests strong connections, two related studies show that the reading differences which theorists find when males and females read literature do not necessarily occur when teachers read student writing.
In the first study, thirty-one writing teachers responded orally and in writing to four student essays. A statistical analysis of the written responses showed few significant differences for three of the essays. The responses to the fourth essay showed marked gender differences due …

The Effect Of A Readiness Year On Children's School Achievement, Self-Concept, And Teacher Expectations, Maria White Mckenna
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of a readiness year on children's later school performance and self-concept. An examination of teachers' attitudes towards readiness and expectations for students' performance was also included.
School records of fourth graders in two New Hampshire school districts were examined. Classroom grades, standardized test scores, Gesell School Readiness Test results, age, and sex were recorded for each participating student. A self-perception scale was administered to the students near the end of the third grade.
Teachers in the two districts completed a questionnaire composed of a series of vignettes. Five variables …
