Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The costs associated with clinical education in physical therapy and other health professions have been debated by educational and hospital administrators in recent years. The assumption has been that these programs incur a cost to the clinical facility. To date, the physical therapy literature has been limited in cost-benefit studies with no definitive conclusions. This study examined the costs of Clinical education in a selective entry-level master's degree program in physical therapy to determine what monetary costs and benefits accrue to clinical affiliation sites and what factors are related to the monetary costs or benefits of clinical education.

Increasing Collegiality Of Non-Team Teachers In A Team-Structured School: A Field Project, Candas K. Marsicek Jul 1989

Increasing Collegiality Of Non-Team Teachers In A Team-Structured School: A Field Project, Candas K. Marsicek

Student Work

The trend toward interdisciplinary teaching teams in middle school has helped to meet many needs of the student population and the staff in these schools. The teaching teams develop a collegiality that helps to eliminate the sense of isolation that teachers experience (Rosenholtz, 1989). Unfortunately in some middle schools some teachers' assignments are outside this team structure. Thus the isolation may create a perceived difference in climate relating to teachers' involvement and interaction, sense of belonging or affiliation, and shared goals.

Improving Social Studies Achievement: An Interdisciplinary Approach, Lindalee Kaminski

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

A high percentage of students in a second grade class with low socio-economic characteristics demonstrated exceptionally low achievement in social studies. Activities designed to increase the target group's understanding of social studies concepts while practicing skills in reading, language arts, math, and science were incorporated into all subject areas utilizing a whole language approach. An emphasis on critical thinking and daily news events allowed for student growth in inferential comprehension and the formation of attitudes about the world. The …

Kindergarten Teachers' Philosophies And Computer Use, Linda Jean Stewart

Student Work

Change and transition are words often heard and associated with the decade of the 1980's. John Naisbitt (1970) forecasted ten major changes in his book, Megatrends. The first chapter of that book predicted the movement in America from an industrial to an informational society. Innovations in communications and computer technology have accelerated this movement. A key point in that chapter described how the educational system was turning out an inferior product for an informational society in terms of basic reading and writing skills. Response to criticism of this kind has been to change school curriculum.

Evaluation Of The Ralston Public Schools Outdoor Education Program, Joseph F. Zadina Jr.

Student Work

In our modern society, schools are no longer places with the threefold academic directive of teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic. Our world of social change has required schools to broaden the focus of their curriculum to include education in life skills as they are evident today. Changes in the basic structures of home and family life automatically alter the traditional social base of school children. The increasing number of mothers in the work force and the growth of single-parent families alter life situations that, in dramatic ways, alter the core and content of education.

A Study Of The Reasons Students Do Not Participate In Extracurricular Activities, Douglas F. Kyles

Student Work

The extracurricular programs offered in our nation’s schools have long been recognized to be significant contributors to the total education of all involved students. Evidence of public support for the inclusion of activity programs in schools was reported in the 1978 annual Gallup Poll (Gallup, 1978). Gallup (1978) reported the 45% of the parents with school-age children felt that extracurricular activities were very important, while another 40% stated that activities were fairly important. The poll went on to report that when adults were asked which subjects they had studied, or experiences they had, in high school which were found to …

Knowing and understanding as much about students as possible is a need common to all schools. Unfortunately, the large student enrollments found in many high schools today have prohibited educators from effectively understanding and meeting the academic and social needs of students. Traditionally it has been the intent and objective of most school guidance and counseling programs to provide students, teachers, and administrators with a variety of personal support services.
