The Methodological Issues Of Variance In Teacher Behavior And Student Achievement: The Relationship Of Variance To School And Teacher Effectiveness., Linda Jane Crone
The Methodological Issues Of Variance In Teacher Behavior And Student Achievement: The Relationship Of Variance To School And Teacher Effectiveness., Linda Jane Crone
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Three different issues were involved in this study. Issue I examined the means and variances of teacher behavior for teachers in effective school versus teachers in ineffective schools. Five teachers were evaluated from grade three and grade five of five effective and six ineffective schools (25 teachers from effective schools and 30 teachers from ineffective schools). Observations of seven dimensions of teaching behavior were conducted. In every case, the group means of teacher behavior were higher for the teachers in the effective school category. An examination of the coefficients of variation indicated that the dispersion of scores for the teachers …
An Evaluability Assessment Of The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service 4-H Program., Robert F. Richard
An Evaluability Assessment Of The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service 4-H Program., Robert F. Richard
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In evaluation practice, Evaluability Assessment (EA) is recognized as an affective tool to determine if a plausible program logic exists before the effort is made to evaluate impact. Applying EA in the Cooperative Extension System, if programs lacked plausibility, the process was used as a design tool. Following the steps recommended in this process, a representative work group of Extension agents, specialists and administrators: (1) identified and developed an educational effects matrix for each of five target audiences of the 4-H program--4-H youth, other youth, family members, leaders and policy makers; (2) abstracted themes emerging from telephone interviews of 95 …
The Difference That Made A Difference: Nuances Of A Transformative Curriculum In The Life History Of Joy Hamilton, A Child Who Has Severe Disabilities., Phyllis James Leone
The Difference That Made A Difference: Nuances Of A Transformative Curriculum In The Life History Of Joy Hamilton, A Child Who Has Severe Disabilities., Phyllis James Leone
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Literature emerging in the field of special education advocates a significant departure from the traditional approach that has guided special education practices, procedures, and, ultimately the decisions made about children. To date, this literature and the debates it generates are focused primarily on special education for children who have mild or moderate disabilities. The dearth of information regarding the implications of an alternative approach for children who have severe disabilities is wanting. This study examines the life history of Joy Hamilton, a child who has severe disabilities, to reveal how curriculum has affected her life. Joy's birth, her infant intervention …
The Interference Of Non-Meaningful Learning On Subsequent Meaningful Learning., Dolores Pesek Simoneaux
The Interference Of Non-Meaningful Learning On Subsequent Meaningful Learning., Dolores Pesek Simoneaux
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to develop a framework for the notions of meaningful and non-meaningful and to test for learning interference from a non-meaningful then meaningful instructional sequence. A review of the literature reveals that terminologies differ widely, but similarities in notions emerge. The terms meaningful and non-meaningful are employed here to indicate, respectively, richness in relationships, or a relative absence of relationships both within the knowledge structure, and in relation to previous knowledge. Based on a Piagetian framework of learning involving assimilation/accommodation and consequently disequilibrium, I hypothesize that non-meaningful learning tends to establish constructs that interfere with …

Symposium: Brown V. Board Of Education And Its Legacy: A Tribute To Justice Thurgood Marshall, The Limitless Horizons Of Brown V. Board Of Education, Louis H. Pollack
Fordham Law Review
Judge Pollak discusses the impact of Brown on Supreme Court jurisprudence. He begins by recounting Morgan v. Virginia--a significant Supreme Court decision that foreshadowed the holding of Brown. The remainder of Judge Pollak's speech highlights Brown's impact on, inter alia, First Amendment jurisprudence and international law.

Symposium: Brown V. Board Of Education And Its Legacy: A Tribute To Justice Thurgood Marshall, Missouri V. Jenkins: Are We Really A Desgregated Society?, Theodore M. Shaw
Fordham Law Review
The Brown decision bucked a centuries-old tradition of discrimination in America, but that tradition has not been easily overcome. Professor Shaw discusses Missouri v. Jenkins and questions whether society has really changed in its attitude towards segregated schools.

More Than Print: The Home And School Literacies Of Three Fourth-Graders, Margaret M. Voss
More Than Print: The Home And School Literacies Of Three Fourth-Graders, Margaret M. Voss
Doctoral Dissertations
Through ethnographic case studies of three fourth-grade children, this study investigates the relationships between children's home and school literacies. The data were collected through participant-observation in the children's homes and at school; interviews of children, parents, and teacher; and analysis of children's products and processes (such as written work and hand-made crafts).
The study defines a literacy as a meaning-making system which can be used functionally, communicatively, reflectively, flexibly, and pleasurably. Schools typically focus on print literacy and do not always recognize or value the range of literacies children bring with them from home. This research shows children using not …
Someone Shot The Rainbow: Emergent Writing Patterns Of Securely And Insecurely Attached, Inner-City First Graders, Cindy Matthews
Someone Shot The Rainbow: Emergent Writing Patterns Of Securely And Insecurely Attached, Inner-City First Graders, Cindy Matthews
Doctoral Dissertations
The mother or primary caretaker of an infant establishes a communicative bond which has long-term implications for the child as a symbolizer and learner. John Bowlby's theory of attachment claims the mother is the secure base from which an infant, and later the child, can explore and master her environment, develop a sense of autonomy, and relate to peers. Attachment theory sheds light on the process and products of inner-city, first-grade children's written symbolization, yielding many patterns cogent to the study of emergent literacy.
Fifty-nine first graders participated in a study involving projective measures of attachment and language ability and …
A Comparison Of Methods For Analyzing Intraindividual Change In Student Epistemological Orientation During The Transition To College, Trey Michael Buchanan
A Comparison Of Methods For Analyzing Intraindividual Change In Student Epistemological Orientation During The Transition To College, Trey Michael Buchanan
Doctoral Dissertations
The ability to measure the development of epistemological beliefs of 235 college students during their first-semester in college was investigated by comparing the results obtained using five different methodological approaches to measuring change. These approaches included the use of the two-wave difference score, the residual change score, the cross-time correlation matrix, repeated measures analysis of variance, and individual growth modeling. A cubic individual growth model was found to be superior to other methods in describing intraindividual differences in dualistic epistemological orientation during the transition to college. An investigation of the existence of systematic interindividual differences in growth as a function …
A Study Of The Reading And Writing Experiences Of Four Laotian Refugee Adolescents From One Family In An American Secondary School, Danling Fu
Doctoral Dissertations
This study describes and interprets the reading and writing experiences of four recently arrived Laotian refugee adolescents from one family in an American secondary school. Through four extensive case studies, the study compares and contrasts how these individuals read and write on their own initiative and are taught to read and write at school, and what happens when the school agenda matches and mismatches their learning patterns. This study reveals how school structure re-enforces the marginalization of the ethnic minority students in their school life by ignoring what they know and who they are. With a focus on four minority …
Beliefs, Autonomy, And Mathematical Knowledge, Judy Ann Rector
Beliefs, Autonomy, And Mathematical Knowledge, Judy Ann Rector
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the apparent effects of students' beliefs about mathematics and autonomy on their learning of mathematics. The study utilized a multiple-case study design with analysis by and across cases. The cases represented six high school students enrolled in either Algebra II or Algebra II/Trigonometry. Data was collected in three phases: (a) classroom observations and assessment of the teacher's perception of her role in the learning process, (b) an assessment of students' beliefs about mathematics and autonomy, and (c) an assessment of students' newly formed mathematical constructs on functions.
The beliefs' assessment included observing …
An Ecological Perspective Of Writing: Teachers, Peers, And Authors As Resources In A Response-Based Classroom, Margaret L. Murray
An Ecological Perspective Of Writing: Teachers, Peers, And Authors As Resources In A Response-Based Classroom, Margaret L. Murray
Doctoral Dissertations
The present study examines the ways in which the available resources of books, classmates, and teacher affect three fourth-grade students' writing development within the same classroom. The study's unique contribution is its holistic description of how all three resources contribute collectively to the ongoing writing of these individuals over the better part of their school year. The study describes the ways in which the children's writing and their notions of good writing are being formed in the dialectical processes of interaction with these resources. Further, the study describes the global traits of their particular classroom's culture--its extant written forms and …
A Celebration Of Tradition Or Of Self? An Ethnographic Study Of Teachers' Comments On Student Writing In America And In China, Xiao-Ming Li
A Celebration Of Tradition Or Of Self? An Ethnographic Study Of Teachers' Comments On Student Writing In America And In China, Xiao-Ming Li
Doctoral Dissertations
The study builds a dialogue between teachers of writing in China and America on what "good writing" is, for the purpose of revealing the fact that "good writing" resides not just with student texts, but with the teachers who read and judge student papers.
Writing comments on student papers is a time-honored and widely accepted practice in writing classrooms in most countries. Teachers offer text-specific advice to each student and communicate to the student writer, among other things, the criteria of good writing. A close look at the teacher's comments, therefore, reveals the criteria with which teachers measure student papers. …
A Study Of The Differences In Induction Experiences For Teachers In Differentially Effective Schools., Carol Sue Ter Haar
A Study Of The Differences In Induction Experiences For Teachers In Differentially Effective Schools., Carol Sue Ter Haar
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Research studies have concluded that many new teachers abandon their teaching careers shortly after starting them. Part of the reason is their lack of adjustment within the very special social structure of public education. Induction of teachers frequently appears to be inadequate. Research over the past 20 years suggests a correlation between positive induction experiences and the quality of schools. This causal comparative study entailed a 3 x 2 design with three levels of school effectiveness and two levels of teacher experience. The schools were classified as effective, typical, or ineffective based on a classification scheme produced by the Louisiana …

Student Affairs: In Search Of Ethics, Christine E. Hobbs
Student Affairs: In Search Of Ethics, Christine E. Hobbs
Graduate Research Papers
Recently, ethics has been a topic that higher education administrators have been examining with intense interest. Ethics and moral responsibility are the themes for educational journal articles, book chapters, and conferences. This interest has led many institutions of higher education in search of ethical standards and guidelines for their professional staffs. There are several reasons that ethics has come to the forefront.

I/D 49 -- THE GENERALATE TEAM, January 1992 -- Spiritans and Education – (pg. 1) -- This ID was originally planned to include both Education and the wider Youth apostolate but it was found impossible to compress such a vast field into the relatively confined space of an ID. In view of the extensive material available from the Symposium which took place at Duquesne University in June 1991 it was decided to concentrate on education in this publication.

The problem investigated in this study relates to the need in schools today to find ways of providing educational support assistance for classroom teachers as part of the classroom learning process. With the continued rise in school enrollments, it is difficult for school funding to keep up with growing educational demands. Favorable student-teacher ratio issues emphasize the need to provide additional help for the classroom teacher. Finding additional classroom help has become a major concern; parents' commitments to employment and social obligations have changed their availability to participate at the schoolhouse and have lessened parent-child contact time (Cassidy, 1981). According …

An Intellectual Odyssey: Intellectual And Cultural Exploration Through The Design Of An American Studies Major For Whittier College, Alycia M. Sanders-Thomas
Whittier Scholars Program
This is more than a senior project. It is also a personal exploration of America itself, a redefinition of terms, and an intellectual odyssey into the strange world of academic discourse. To complete this project, I have had to ask myself hard questions about America and what it means to me, about what I think someone should know to truly understand America, about my place in the Whittier College community and my educational philosophy for that community, and about where, if anywhere, I fit into the realm of professional academic discourse. After journeys across physical space, to Baltimore for the …
Applying Edgewood V. Kirby To Analysis Of Fundamental Rights Under The Texas Constitution, Albert H. Kauffman
Applying Edgewood V. Kirby To Analysis Of Fundamental Rights Under The Texas Constitution, Albert H. Kauffman
Faculty Articles
State constitutions are affirmative grants of power under which both stated and implied fundamental rights can be sought. A proposed test for fundamental rights under the Texas Constitution looks at three factors: the history of the topic within the Texas Constitution and case law; the actual language used in the controlling provision; and the importance of that value to the people of Texas. The declaration of a constitutional right as fundamental certainly has implications for future relationships between the people and the government.
The Edgewood v. Kirby case has the potential to change much in Texas. The case stands for …

Inside The American Stratification System: Imageries From The Black Writers, Clinton M. Jean
Trotter Review
The following paper was given at a seminar, "Teaching African-American Literature," at the Center for Literary and Cultural Studies of Harvard University in April 1991. The paper addresses several questions. If social science, as a matter of scientific principle, must choose to avoid ethical conclusions, do black novelists, poets, and essayists help fill the ethical void? But then, are they objective enough?

An Interview With John D. O'Bryant, Harold Horton
Trotter Review
The following is an interview with John D. O'Bryant, vice-president for student affairs at Northeastern University and former president of the Boston School Committee. A new, appointed, school committee was sworn into office on January 6, 1992. This interview with the former president should offer a unique perspective on past achievements and future hopes for education in Boston.
