Reading Rate And Reading Comprehension: A Comparison Of Identified And Non-Identified Readers, Debra L. Schwiesow Mar 1992

Reading Rate And Reading Comprehension: A Comparison Of Identified And Non-Identified Readers, Debra L. Schwiesow

Student Work

Previous studies have supported the fact that reading rate is strongly correlated with reading comprehension for "normal readers". However, few have studied this relationship for students experiencing difficulties in reading. If informal measures of reading ability such as CBM (Curriculum-Based Measurement) are to be used in determining eligibility for special education services or monitoring progress in a curriculum then the relationship reading rate and reading comprehension should be determined. The cross-validation of applied measures such as standardized tests of reading (i.e. Gates-McGinnitie) and informal measures such as CBM with theoretical models of reading development (such as those proposed by LaBerge …

This study examines the changes of attitudes towards group learning after being exposed to cooperative learning on a regular basis. The population of this study consists of two third grade classrooms of twenty-four children in each room. An attitude survey, developed by the researcher, is used for this study. The survey is a pre-post-post test given in one school year. The first posttest results show an increase in positive attitudes towards cooperative learning. Analysis of the survey questions are available in the study. More research needs to be done in this area with a broader population.

Thinking Things, Not Words: Irvin Rutter's Pragmatic Jurisprudence Of Teaching, Gordon A. Christenson

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

Those of us in legal education and in the profession of law are in debt to the Law Review for publishing in this issue the last work of the late Professor Irvin Rutter, Law, Language, and Thinking Like a Lawyer.

On the occasion of Irvin Rutter's retirement in 1980, I briefly summarized these earlier contributions, locating them within the legal realist tradition, and we awaited the publication of his last work, then still in draft not quite satisfactory to Professor Rutter. In this essay, I situate his final work on teaching law in the pragmatist tradition with special emphasis on …

During this time span the emergence of a shared decision model, called "Empowerment", developed as a result of faculty expectation and pressure. Conclusions, implications, and recommendations are discussed.

The Effect Of Matching Learning Style And Instruction With Academic Achievement Of Students Receiving An Interactive Learning Experience In Chemistry, Vuren Sandra Van

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This experimental investigation was aimed at determining the effect of matching learning styles and instruction upon academic achievement of students receiving an interactive learning experience in chemistry. The purpose of the study was to isolate four basic learning styles, design style-specific instruction, and test their effects upon student academic achievement levels in an interactive learning environment. This was an experimental investigation utilizing a post-test only control group with randomization research design. This design was chosen because it enabled the researcher to isolate the dependent variable and test it for statistical effect. Subjects for this study included 197 students enrolled at …

Changing Patterns Of Centralization And Decentralization In American School Governance., Charles Walter Triche Iii Jan 1992

Changing Patterns Of Centralization And Decentralization In American School Governance., Charles Walter Triche Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation traces the evolution of American school governance and educational administration from the mid-seventeenth century through 1991. It examines the arguments which surround the centralization or decentralization debate and traces the rationale for the adoption of either a centralist or decentralist manner of school governance. In tracing the evolution of the rationale used by educational administrators for the adoption of either a centralist or decentralist form of governance, this dissertation establishes an order to the debate, traces shifts in philosophy, determines the dominance of either centralist or decentralist philosophy during each historical period studied, and identifies reasons why that …

Predicting Kindergarten Success: Use Of The Lens Model Methodology To Determine Factors Which Predict Success In The Kindergarten Classroom., Karen Lynne Serrett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recent developments, including and especially the passage of legislation such as P.L. 99-457, have led to a call for more sophisticated technology to accurately assess at-risk preschool children. In addition, there is an urgent need for well trained professionals to perform these assignments. The purpose of the present study was to utilize the Lens Model methodology to examine variables professionals believe are important predictors of successful kindergarten functioning. In addition, the study also explored which variables would actually predict successful kindergarten functioning. Four major findings emerged from the study. First, results indicated that, for the professionals, Social Skills and Cognitive …
