One of the most important decisions concerning special education, in the last 20 years, has been the passage of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA) in 1975, more commonly known as P.L.94-142. Even more specifically was the principle known as the mainstreaming mandate requiring that appropriate education be provided to all children with handicaps in the least restrictive environment at no cost to the parents.

Development Of A Model High School Orientation Program, E. Gene Hobart
Student Work
Educating children is, without a doubt, one of the largest tasks taking place today in the United States. Education is a big business and can be categorized as an investment to develop our human resources (Bodley and Shapiro, 1969). The National Center for Education Statistics (1990) reports that by the year 1993, $180 billion will be spent annually on elementary and secondary public education. Almost seven million professionals and support personnel are employed in public schools. Expenditures for public education constitute nearly four percent of the gross national product (Swanson and King, 1991).

A Comparison Of Fourth Grade Students' Encyclopedia Research Skills Utilizing Traditional Instruction Contrasted With Traditional/Technological Instruction At King Science Center, Mary Louise Snook Kluver
Student Work
The King Science Center was created in 1985 by the Omaha School Board which serves 43,000 students. The center was originally a magnet for grades four, five, and six. Formerly the building was a junior high school or a ninth grade center from 1959 to 1988. The facility was reorganized into a science middle school magnet by first removing the ninth grade and then transferring grades four, five, and six from the former King Science Center facility and adding grades seven and eight.

The European Learning Alliance Model And The Company Based Mba, P N Thirunarayana
The European Learning Alliance Model And The Company Based Mba, P N Thirunarayana
IIMB Management Review
The concern that the traditional MBA is too academic and to create a “new cadre of students and faculty characterised by: interest in and knowledge of real problems... and (with) hands on orientation, experimental skills and insight” (Dertouzos et al. 1989), resulted in the collaboration between the business schools and business in the United Kingdom in designing the company-based MBA. These flexible, modular MBA programmes are integrated with work environment and give the participating companies a greater say in the development and implementation of the programme. This paper describes the underpinnings, the perspectives of the stakeholders and the architecture of …

Guidelines For Planning Future Public School Facilities: A Trends-Oriented Approach, Harold E. Coffey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to establish guidelines for planning future public school facilities based upon identified global, societal, and educational trends that would most likely highly impact upon the types of public school facilities that will be built in the future. Based upon an extensive literature review, interviews with educational practitioners and facility specialists, and on-site visits to 15 schools in four states, 66 guideline elements were developed. These elements were submitted in a questionnaire/rating sheet format to a researcher-selected jury of 13 national educational facility planning specialists (100% Response Rate) for their evaluations. The five …
Leadership Perspectives Of Tennessee School Leaders, Jessie S. Strickland
Leadership Perspectives Of Tennessee School Leaders, Jessie S. Strickland
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem was to determine factors Tennessee school leaders consider important to effective leadership. Organizational frames by Bolman and Deal were used. The four organizational frames used in the study were structural, human resource, political, and symbolic approaches to leadership. The frames were examined with regard to their relationship to Tennessee superintendent's leadership and management styles with the perception of his/her style by their superordinates and subordinates. Leadership Orientations, a validated instrument designed by Bolman and Deal, was used to gain insight about school leader perceptions from superintendents and from individuals who work in school administration with the superintendents. Individual …

Nine schools renovated since 1985 in Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina were chosen to participate in the study. The treatment of data was reported around the use of identified elements of …
School-Based Decision-Making: What Is Necessary For A Successful Implementation In The Public Schools Of Tennessee, Helen F. Owen
School-Based Decision-Making: What Is Necessary For A Successful Implementation In The Public Schools Of Tennessee, Helen F. Owen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Tennessee State Board of Education was moving to establish school-based decision making, with little or no apparent attention to what may be needed by educators. This study has been conceived based on the lack of an advertised plan of skill instruction, the lack of a supplied knowledge base from which educators can pull resources, and the lack of an obvious high level of understanding on the part of educators in general. A developmental inquiry and a survey were conducted to determine what principals and supervisors know about school-based decision making and what will be needed to increase the chances …
Advisement Effectiveness And Self-Directed Learning: A Comparison Between Traditional And Non-Traditional Students In Selected Regional Universities In Tennessee, James L. Daniel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Because most academic advisement programs were established to accomodate traditional student populations, it was the purpose of this study to compare the effectiveness of these systems as perceived by traditional and non-traditional undergraduate students at three of Tennessee's regional universities. Traditional and non-traditional students were also compared on the extent to which they exhibit self-directed learning. A comparison of mean scores was made for responses made to items contained in the American College Testing (ACT) Survey of Academic Advising, including the total mean score for the Oddi Continuing Learning Inventory (OCLI) between traditional/non-traditional students, full-time/part-time students, students at the three …

A Study Of The Reasons Students Do Not Enroll In Foreign Languages., Mary Ann Pederson
A Study Of The Reasons Students Do Not Enroll In Foreign Languages., Mary Ann Pederson
Student Work
This study was conducted to learn why some students avoid enrolling in foreign language classes. Prompted by a trend of decreasing enrollments in foreign language in the face of increasing need for global awareness and understanding, this study sought the opinions of students who did not included foreign language classes in their high school programs. The design of the study facilitated the investigation. It brought together randomly-selected students who were not currently enrolled in foreign language, and allowed them to brainstorm and discuss with other students in the same grade their reasons for omitting foreign language from their programs. They …
An Assessment Of The Satisfaction Of First-Year Omaha Public School Teachers Participating In The Mentor Project During The 1991-1992 School Year, Kathleen Jiede
Student Work
Because teachers work in classrooms behind closed doors and segregated from their colleagues, teaching can be a lonely profession. Except for team-teaching arrangements, teaching assignments generally hinder teachers from observing and learning from one another (Shulman, 1988). Teachers suffer from isolation and lack of opportunities to learn from their colleagues (Bowers and Eberhart, 1989). In addition to the segregated nature of their work, new teachers can especially feel isolated since they are also dealing with unfamiliar school routines, curriculum, lesson planning methods, and discipline practices. New teachers, however bright, capable, well-trained, and enthusiastic, lack the knowledge in teaching that is …
The Effects Of Teacher Attitudes Toward Prereferral Interventions As A Function Of Consulting Source, Denise Barsdorf Greenberg
The Effects Of Teacher Attitudes Toward Prereferral Interventions As A Function Of Consulting Source, Denise Barsdorf Greenberg
Student Work
In recent years the topic of prereferral activities has received increasing attention in the field of education. The move toward prereferral interventions stems from dissatisfaction with the current system of referring a student for special education services (Graden, Casey & Christenson, 1985; Curtis, Zins, & Graden, 1987). In this system a child is referred for evaluation by the classroom teacher if the teacher feels the child is having academic or behavioral difficulties.
