A Study Of Collaborative Consultation Versus Traditional Methods Of Special Education Service Delivery., Jane Nell Guyer Luster
A Study Of Collaborative Consultation Versus Traditional Methods Of Special Education Service Delivery., Jane Nell Guyer Luster
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examined the attitudes and perceptions of general and special educators engaged in collaborative consultation and those utilizing traditional self-contained or resource methods of special education service delivery. A difference in collaborative consultation and traditional educators was predicted on autonomy, as measured by Charters' (1974) Sense of Autonomy Scale (SAS), zone of acceptance, as measured by the Professional Zone of Acceptance Inventory (PZAI) (Kunz and Hoy, 1974), and pluralistic ignorance, as measured by the Pupil Control Ideology (PCI) form developed by Willower, Eidell, and Hoy (1967). School climate was measured using the Organizational Climate Description Question-Revised Elementary (OCDQ-RE) (Hoy …
Curriculum Needs Of Entry-Level Agribusiness Managers In Jamaica., James Durwin Mckenzie
Curriculum Needs Of Entry-Level Agribusiness Managers In Jamaica., James Durwin Mckenzie
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
For developing countries, establishing linkages between education and key productive sectors of their economies is a top priority in their agendas for higher education. This interaction is essential to ensure that job requirements are matched by the qualification of job recruits. This study used the framework of job analysis to identify the importance of job skills and personal qualities required by entry-level agribusiness managers and to determine if the curriculum of the College of Agriculture, Jamaica, was providing those skills and qualities. The Agribusiness Management Aptitude and Skill Survey (AGRI-MASS) was used to survey top and middle management personnel in …
Visual Transformations In Symbolic Elementary Algebra., Thomas Harold Awtry
Visual Transformations In Symbolic Elementary Algebra., Thomas Harold Awtry
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Competence in algebra requires knowledge of parsing and transformations. The parsing component specifies the structure of algebraic expressions based on conventional operation hierarchies. The transformational component specifies the real number properties used to transform algebraic expressions into equivalent forms. In standard models of mathematical cognition, both components are conceived as strictly propositional domains (e.g., Anderson, 1983a). Kirshner (1989b) demonstrated that parsing knowledge initially is apprehended in a visual (non-propositional) modality. This dissertation extends that visual analysis beyond parsing to the transformational component. It is proposed that transformations range on a continuum from highly propositional (e.g., x(y$\sp{-1}) = ({\rm x \over …

Let's Decode: Inservice Manual, P. J. Formentin
Research outputs pre 2011
This manual contains inservice material that was prepared for a research project that came to be known as Let's Decode. My motive for publishing the material in this form is to make it available to other teachers who may wish to apply the same principles and procedures in their own classrooms. Typically, they will be teachers who are concerned about children experiencing difficulty learning to read, and teachers responsible for students with special education needs. I am confident that regular classroom teachers will also find the material valuable for all children in the early stages of learning to read. My …

School Systems In Transition: The Future Of Government School Education In Australia, Max Angus
School Systems In Transition: The Future Of Government School Education In Australia, Max Angus
Research outputs pre 2011
Since the mid-eighties state governments have initiated the restructuring of the public school systems in order to improve their effectiveness and efficiency. However, after controversial beginnings, the commitment to the principles underpinning the reforms has weakened. The reality lags far behind the loosely-applied rhetoric of devolution, accountability and productivity. While in this disabling transitional state, schools are now subjected to a new wave of change propelled by the economic restructuring agenda of the Commonwealth Government. Extraordinary expectations are being set for schools as a consequence of policies designed to connect the outcomes of education more closely to the requirements of …

Establishment Of A Program For The Education Of Cytotechnologists, Joan R. Kohrs
Establishment Of A Program For The Education Of Cytotechnologists, Joan R. Kohrs
Theses
The Barnes Hospital School of Cytotechnology closed in 1977 as have many other programs tor the education of cytotechnologists. These programs were victims of hospital budgetary concerns, as well as a job market that had no demand tor new cytotechnologists.
Unfortunately with fewer and fewer graduates from accredited programs in the last 15-16 years there is, currently a shortage of these skilled laboratory professionals.
Faced with unfilled vacancies in the cytology laboratory many hospitals are considering re-evaluating the possibilities of sponsoring programs for the education of cytotechnologists.

How To Get Students More Actively Involved In Science Learning To Avoid Scientific Illiteracy, Amy A. Vacula
How To Get Students More Actively Involved In Science Learning To Avoid Scientific Illiteracy, Amy A. Vacula
Honors Capstones
Students should be more involved in science learning in order to avoid scientific illiteracy. The purpose of this project is to show that hands-on science is one possible solution. After looking at research about the possible consequences of scientific illiteracy and doing an extensive review of current major literary works dealing with the issue, hands-on science appears to be a possible solution. Many people are afraid of the negative effects in the United States if scientific illiteracy continues to be a problem in our society. Hands-on science has helped many teachers capture student's curiosity and interest. Students are encouraged to …
Expert And Novice Teachers Compared : A Comparison Of Their Roles And Functions With Implications For Teacher Education, Peter Cole
Research outputs pre 2011
What is the nature of expertise and what characterizes expert performance? What features of cognition and problem solving are typically associated with a highly proficient performance? At one level the answers to these questions are obvious. By definition, expert performers are highly knowledgeable of their subject disciplines and capable of very competent performances in their particular fields of endeavour. The expert in the present context refers to those with knowledge and the ability to apply that knowledge. This definition excludes the ivory tower stereotype: that is, the person with theoretical knowledge without practical or applied knowledge. But the definitional parameters …

An Intelligent Tutoring System For The German Language, Kenneth E. Staffan
An Intelligent Tutoring System For The German Language, Kenneth E. Staffan
Theses
This thesis report describes the design and implementation of a prototype Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS), intended to assist students of the German language. Very early in the study of a foreign language, the student is faced with the difficulties of sentence construction. Not only are there numerous rules and combination to deal with, but it is difficult to verify attempts when the teacher is unavailable. Individual words can be looked up in a dictionary, but the student must often rely on stumbling across a sentence of similar construction in order to verify a trial sentence. A variety of Computer-Assisted Language …
Anton Gravesen - Immigrant's Way, Anton Gravesen
Anton Gravesen - Immigrant's Way, Anton Gravesen
The Bridge
Anton Gravesen (1870-1952) became a well-respected merchant in Tyler, Minnesota, and banker in Askov, Minnesota. This autobiographical excerpt, provided by his daughter, Dagmar Gravesen, first records his experiences as a young immigrant and then describes his fast rise as a successful businessman. It ends with his philosophical acceptance of his losses during the Great Depression. Gravesen was born on a small farm on the Jutland heath. The death of his mother when he was 10 made him selfreliant and industrious. He not only worked for his father but also hired out to neighbors and his uncles as a sheep and …
Leadership Relationships And The Superintendency, Theresa M. Peterson Edd
Leadership Relationships And The Superintendency, Theresa M. Peterson Edd
Dissertations
Leadership in the 1990s is perceived as the primary solution to the political, social, economic and educational problems encountered today by our western society. The solutions that have worked in the industrialized society of the past are being re-evaluated and questioned by our technocratic society of today. The concept of leadership is undergoing a change. The old industrial view of leadership is making way for the emerging postindustrial view--a view that regards leadership as an inter-relational process among people who intend real, substantive changes berthed from a mutuality of purpose. This research focused on the leadership relationships forged in the …

An Exploration Of The Organizational Structure Of Instructional Supervision. (Volumes I And Ii)., Joseph Gerard Claudet
An Exploration Of The Organizational Structure Of Instructional Supervision. (Volumes I And Ii)., Joseph Gerard Claudet
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study explores the organizational nature of instructional supervision in schools. A conceptual model of the organizational/supervisory (O/S) structure and effects of school supervisory behaviors is presented. The model is based on an organizational conception of instructional supervision that views the variety of supervisory behaviors, interactions and decision making engaged in by school personnel as forming a unique supervisory subculture within the school organization. The model suggests that a school's overall O/S structure is determined through the complex interrelationship of an array of macro- and micro-level communicative elements or supervisory events. These macro- and micro-level elements are, in turn, influenced …

The purpose of this study was to identify what good elementary music teachers do by: (a) identifying primary factors that contribute to effective music teaching as defined by exemplary behaviors of recognized music specialists; (b) examining the relationship of teacher-defined instructional values, which emerge through qualitative study to operationally defined characteristics of effective music instruction resulting from quantitative research; and (c) exploring the possibility that qualitative and quantitative methods of research might be complementary. Nine experienced, elementary music specialists from three regions of the country were observed, audio- and videotaped, and interviewed. Interviews with selected students and instructional documents supplemented …
Toward Understanding Post-Structuralism And Curriculum., Wen-Song Hwu
Toward Understanding Post-Structuralism And Curriculum., Wen-Song Hwu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation describes extensions of post-structuralism in contemporary curriculum discourses. Post-structuralist thought is mainly associated with the seminal work of Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, Jean-Francois Lyotard, and Michel Serres. Post-structural criticism and analysis challenge prevailing structuralist approaches and question the fundamental assumptions upon which these approaches rest. A key assumption of structural approaches is that all phenomena are constituted by an underlying structure. In curriculum, these structural assumptions (often scientific) remain unacknowledged and thus are immunized against criticism; rather, they are incorporated into the preferred structural analyses, interpretations, and organizations promoted by the promise of order and rationality. …
A Sixth-Grade Literature Discourse Community: Making Social Meaning With Illustrated Literature During Interactive Reading Events., Elizabeth Lee Willis
A Sixth-Grade Literature Discourse Community: Making Social Meaning With Illustrated Literature During Interactive Reading Events., Elizabeth Lee Willis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The study focused on six at-risk students enrolled in the sixth grade at a large urban Southern middle school. These students, along with their classroom teacher, participated in two interactive reading events using illustrated trade books. The purpose of the study was to examine how these students used the pictures and text to create meaning for the stories. The two illustrated selections differed in story complexity, amount of world knowledge required for interpretation, and relationship of pictures to text (i.e., a close relationship indicated both picture and text communicated similar information, while a distanced relationship indicated one source provided story …

Comparison Of Word Recognition And Story Retelling Under The Conditions Of Contextualized Versus Decontextualized Reading Events In At-Risk Poor Readers., Linda Cain Badon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated the relative effects of two instructional approaches on reading recognition and comprehension of passages read by low-SES first grade children. It was hypothesized that use of a contextualized instructional approach (i.e., Communicative Reading Strategies) (CRS) which facilitated written language processing (i.e., vocabulary acquisition, grammatical understanding, narrative structure, and passage comprehension) within the context of oral reading would result in better internalization of a written story than would decontextualized activities (i.e., Directed Reading) (DR) targeting the same behaviors immediately preceding or following the reading of a story. The efficacy of the two treatments was measured by (1) fluency …
