Tournament-Style Debate As A Natural Resources Education Technique, Matthew S. Carroll, F. J. Alt, A. M. Brandenburg, W. Schlosser, Steven E. Daniels Jan 1993

Tournament-Style Debate As A Natural Resources Education Technique, Matthew S. Carroll, F. J. Alt, A. M. Brandenburg, W. Schlosser, Steven E. Daniels

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Curricula in the natural resource professions are placing increased emphasis on course work dealing with the larger philosophical and value-related questions surrounding resource management. This development presents a challenge to instructors, particularly in terms of encouraging active student involvement in such courses. The use of tournament debate format provides one useful means for fostering such involvement while also aiding in the development of oral communication skills. The authors' experience with the use of debate suggests that certain modifications to traditional debate format aid in its successful classroom use.

Hsp 72 In Rat Skeletal Muscle: Fibre Type Differences And Effect Of Exercise, Marius Locke Jan 1993

Hsp 72 In Rat Skeletal Muscle: Fibre Type Differences And Effect Of Exercise, Marius Locke

Digitized Theses

Western blot analyses of SDS-PAGE separated proteins from various hindlimb muscles from non-exercised control animals probed with an HSP 72 monoclonal antibody, demonstrated the constitutive expression of HSP 72 in rat muscles comprised primarily of Type I muscle fibres (soleus), but not in muscles comprised primarily of Type IIB/X fibres (white gastrocnemius-WG). In muscles of mixed fibre type, (plantaris and red gastrocnemius-RG) HSP 72 content was proportional to the percentage of Type I fibres.;Immunolocalization of HSP 72 in cross-sections from the soleus muscle demonstrated that both Type I and Type IIA fibres expressed HSP 72, but Type I fibres expressed …

Self-Regulatory Speech In Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disordered Children, Megan Lee Marquier

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Self-regulation of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disordered (ADHD) boys was assessed by examining differences in task-directive verbalizations between boys with ADHD and their peers using Meichenbaum et al.'s (1992) coding system. Eleven dyads of ADHD/normal boys and eleven dyads of normal/normal boys were asked to work on a Lego block task. All of the boys were between the ages of 7 and 10 years and were rated to be average or above in intelligence. Videotapes of the interactions were transcribed and coded for task functions, dialogue features, affect, attribution, and behavioral ratings. Correlated and independent sample t-tests showed that the non-ADHD …

Doctoral Dissertations

This study addresses the need for more research to help resolve the issues of the nationwide debate between advocates of state sponsored alternative certification programs, and advocates of collegiate sponsored, teacher education programs. The State of New Hampshire has both alternative certification and teacher education programs that are representative of those in other states.

A random sample of four hundred ninety-two teachers was selected. Two hundred ninety-five responded to the teachers' questionnaire, a 60% rate. Two hundred thirty of the respondents gave permission for their principals to rate their performance on a second questionnaire. One hundred sixty-one principals responded, a …

A Computer Model Of The Role Of Text Integration In The Solution Of Arithmetic Word Problems, Mark David Leblanc Jan 1993

A Computer Model Of The Role Of Text Integration In The Solution Of Arithmetic Word Problems, Mark David Leblanc

Doctoral Dissertations

Understanding arithmetic word problems involves a complex interaction of text comprehension and mathematical processes. This work presents a computer model of the hypothesized processes that are required of a young student solving arithmetic word problems, including the processes of sentence-level leading and text integration. Unlike previous computer simulations of word problem solving, which neglect the early stages of text processing, this model forces a detailed consideration of the linguistic process, which is being increasingly recognized as a primary source of difficulty. Three experiments were conducted to isolate critical test comprehension processes. Children's probability of solution was analyzed in regression analyses …

Culturally Responsive Talk Between A Second-Grade Teacher And Hawaiian Children During Writing Workshop, John Timothy Rynkofs Jan 1993

Culturally Responsive Talk Between A Second-Grade Teacher And Hawaiian Children During Writing Workshop, John Timothy Rynkofs

Doctoral Dissertations

This study addresses issues of linguistic and cultural differences in the context of writing workshop in a second grade classroom in Hawaii. The major purpose of the study was to look at the ways a native born teacher responds orally to her students who share her own bidialectical background. Most of the students are part-Hawaiian and speak a nonprestigious dialect called Hawaii Creole English (HCE) as their primary language and standard English (SE) as their secondary language. Not only do these students speak a dialect particular to the Hawaiian Islands, but their classroom interactions can be strikingly different from those …

Technology: Review Of Literature Executive Summary, John Pisapia Jan 1993

Technology: Review Of Literature Executive Summary, John Pisapia

MERC Publications

This literature review focuses on the application of technology (primarily the computer) to education. It is organized to present background information to familiarize the reader with basic issues relevant to teaching with technology, the restructuring of American schools, and the performance one could expect from the infusion of technology into schools and classrooms. Furthermore, it summarizes findings regarding access and equity, in-service and pre-service education, and funding and facilities.

After the decade of enthusiasm, there still is no single compelling vision driving the infusion of technology into the schools; four have been projected.

1. The Social Rationale. Policy makers want …

Results showed that a portfolio assessment with CBM's is an effective evaluation tool.

Visibility And Invisibility In Art And Craft, Fiona Blaikie Jan 1993

Visibility And Invisibility In Art And Craft, Fiona Blaikie

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The visibility and invisibility or censorship of art and craft is determined by individual and group ontologies. Their production has often been constricted and/or defined by gender, class, culture, race, religion, and politics. In this paper, I am concerned with the visibility of varieties of art, design, and craft. I will examine censorship based on three criteria; gender, culture, and class, with the censorship of artwork because of gender being the dominant theme.

Relationship Between Prosocial Orientation And Prosocial Behavior Of Preschoolers, Mark William Thompson Jan 1993

Relationship Between Prosocial Orientation And Prosocial Behavior Of Preschoolers, Mark William Thompson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study concerns the multidimensional factors influencing preschoolers' prosocial behavior. Comprehension of this complex phenomenon requires a synthesized, theoretical conceptualization. This study develops the concept of prosocial orientation to meet this need. Prosocial orientation is posited as minimally composed of four core variables: perspective-taking, empathy, moral reasoning, and others-concept. The position is taken in this study that higher levels of some or all of these four variables may cluster statistically among some preschoolers. The second issue proposes that preschoolers with a relatively better developed prosocial orientation (i.e., higher levels of some or all of the four variables) would also likely …

Energy Management In Louisiana's Public School Districts., Debra T. Acosta Jan 1993

Energy Management In Louisiana's Public School Districts., Debra T. Acosta

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Revenues for public education are declining and school budgets are being evaluated for ways to cut waste. The maintenance and operations budget often falls victim to the budget ax as maintenance on equipment and buildings is deferred. It may be that as a result of the deferred maintenance, school districts are actually spending more on maintenance and operations and energy than before. This study sought to determine the status of energy use in Louisiana's 66 public school districts and to determine the need for an energy management education program in those districts. Data for the 1991-92 school year were collected …
