A Sociological Study Of The Manifestation Of Multi-Culturalism In Public Schools, Christy Lee Hammer Jan 1994

A Sociological Study Of The Manifestation Of Multi-Culturalism In Public Schools, Christy Lee Hammer

Doctoral Dissertations

Debates on multi-culturalism are prevalent in politics, the mass media, and the educational system. I identify the range of local and national views concerning multi-culturalism and multi-cultural education, and explore how these views are manifest in actual multi-cultural practices in the schools. My central thesis is that the implementation of multi-culturalism in the schools threatens core, traditional values functional to the power structure. Yet, effective, quality multi-cultural education does takes place. This reveals a contradiction between the needs of the Nation-State to maintain certain core values and the need for multi-culturalism by international capitalism.

I have explored multi-cultural issues in …

Writing And Reading As Reflexive Inquiry: A Reflexive Inquiry, Donna Jeanne Qualley Jan 1994

Writing And Reading As Reflexive Inquiry: A Reflexive Inquiry, Donna Jeanne Qualley

Doctoral Dissertations

In this inquiry, I draw from theories in feminist epistemology, ethnography, and hermeneutics that consider the role of subjectivity in the construction and assessment of understanding in order to examine the process of reflexivity and explore its significance for learning.

I define reflexivity as a response triggered by an individual's dialectical encounter with an other (person, culture, text or other part of the self) whereby the individual begins to identify and critically examine his or her knowledge and assumptions. Using students' writing from my composition classes, I suggest how writing and reading, especially essayistic writing and reading, might be used …

Mainstreaming In Vocational Education: The Socio-Political Context Of Including Students With Disabilities, Joan K. Schwartz Jan 1994

Mainstreaming In Vocational Education: The Socio-Political Context Of Including Students With Disabilities, Joan K. Schwartz

Doctoral Dissertations

This research explores the use of separate training for employment programs (STEP) in serving the needs of students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment in secondary vocational programs in New Hampshire relative to the effect of factors associated with the organization and culture of the school and demographic characteristics of the community.

Multiple and logistic regression analyses were used to estimate the effects of school size, sending/receiving school status, community wealth, and expenditures for education on the likelihood that students with disabilities will be placed in a mainstreamed or separate vocational setting. In addition, 24 face-to-face interviews were conducted …

The Generalized Distributive Law As Tacit Knowledge In Algebra., Juanita Lavall Bates Jan 1994

The Generalized Distributive Law As Tacit Knowledge In Algebra., Juanita Lavall Bates

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purposes of this study were to investigate theories that explain why common errors of the type ($a \pm b)\sp{c} = a\sp{c} \pm b\sp{c}$ and $\root c \of {a \pm b} = \root c \of {a} \pm \root c \of {b}$ occur in algebra problem solving by novices; and to develop and assess techniques for remediating these errors. The meaning theory of learning (ML), procedural learning theory (PL), and implicit structure learning theory (ISL) are alternative frameworks for the explanation of the errors. The ML theory hypothesizes that experts have rich semantic connections to the procedures and symbols of algebra, …

State Constitutional Protection Of Children With Aids And The Right To A Public Education, Jeffrey M. Croasdell

Cleveland State Law Review

The purpose of this article is to examine the problem that the American public school system is facing with respect to children with AIDS. In addition, this paper will examine how the courts are analyzing this issue and show why the current trend of analysis is weaker than it should be. Finally, this paper will look at how state constitutions are more frequently being used to protect individual rights and how the state constitutions could be used to protect the right of children with AIDS to free public education.

The Deep Creek School: Technology, Ecology And The Body As Pedagogical Alternatives In Art Education, Daniel L. Collins, Charles R. Garoian Jan 1994

The Deep Creek School: Technology, Ecology And The Body As Pedagogical Alternatives In Art Education, Daniel L. Collins, Charles R. Garoian

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The Deep Creek School is grappling with a cultural condition in which the line between actual experience and its simulation has become blurred as never before. Today’s students are conversant in the language of electronic media and consumer culture--but they encounter difficulties when trying to navigate the real crises in the health of their bodies and the global environment. There is a deep sense among many of the artists and educators that we speak with that art programs nationwide are not responding sufficiently to the dramatic changes occurring in the culture at large. The precedent of fitting programs to the …

Art, Education, Work, And Leisure: Tangles In The Lifelong Learning Network, Lara M. Lackey Jan 1994

Art, Education, Work, And Leisure: Tangles In The Lifelong Learning Network, Lara M. Lackey

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Although the field of art education has, in recent years, acknowledged the prevalence of non-formal educational sites, our literature is divided on whether this trend poses an opportunity for cooperation and strength or a threat to the status of art as a school subject. This paper consults the literature of critical theory within the domains of art, education, and leisure studies in order to examine the relationship between formal and non-formal art education. First, it considers ways in which tradition conceptualizations of art, education, leisure, and work foster an acceptance of art as experience and knowledge to be gained outside …

Valuing Difference: Luce Irigaray And Feminist Pedagogy, Yvonne Gaudelius Jan 1994

Valuing Difference: Luce Irigaray And Feminist Pedagogy, Yvonne Gaudelius

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The anonymous worker- the mother, the teacher- the anonymous woman. Woman defined by her fixed place in the system of reproduction. How has this come to be? How has woman become-how does she remain-an anonymous instrument in the reproduction of patriarchy? How does social reproduction relate to the position of woman as mother-as the “vehicle” of physical reproduction? In this paper, I tie questions such as these to the discipline of education, and to women's role in the underlying ideologies of our educational system. In order to do so I will approach these questions from three distinct vantage points: a) …

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The Committee on Public Information was established during World War I to turn every channel of communication and education to promote the war effort. The Committee marshaled agencies of the press, education, and advertising, among others into wartime service for the Committee. The following questions are posed: 1) To what degree did the Committee practice direct censorship in its promotion of wartime issues? 2) What was the role of education in the wartime campaigns? 3) What was the role of the artist in wartime art affect public taste? This article is based on the theory put forth by Lawrence A. …

The Creation Of Education By Hispanic Women, Heidi Howarth Jan 1994

The Creation Of Education By Hispanic Women, Heidi Howarth

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

This paper examines the experience of Hispanic females in the public school in relation to how alternative learning, which takes place outside of classroom activities and discussions, generates a distinct method by which to gain an education. Four major frameworks utilized in discussing minority participation in education are presented and a focus on gender differences in education is submitted. This is followed by information obtained through an in-depth interview process. Analysis of the information shows the failure to account for differentiation between male and female Hispanics presents an assimilationist posturing of research. By placing race/ethnicity, class, and gender on equal …

"Education For Service": Gender, Class, & Professionalism At The Boston Normal School, 1870-1920, Ann Froines Jan 1994

"Education For Service": Gender, Class, & Professionalism At The Boston Normal School, 1870-1920, Ann Froines

Women’s and Gender Studies Faculty Publication Series

"Education for Service," and “The Truth Shall Make You Free,” are two aphorisms engraved in granite over doorways of the Boston Normal School (BNS) buildings on Huntington Avenue in Boston. One can argue that the history of women in the teaching profession, its paradoxical and conflicted reality, are reflected in the complex and contradictory meanings of these two aphorisms. Young women students at BNS were moving toward greater freedom or autonomy by taking advantage of the educational opportunity available to them in this city-supported, tuition-free teacher training institution. At the same time, they were providing a crucial social service sanctioned …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This descriptive study investigated the concerns and perceptions of Indiana early intervention (EI) directors and public school (PS) preschool coordinators about transition practices for young children with disabilities. A three part questionnaire was used in this study. The Stages of Concern Questionnaire (Hall, George, & Rutherford, 1986) in Part I collected information about transition concerns. Parts II and III of the questionnaire were developed by the investigator and collected information about experience and training background of participants; use and impact of written local interagency transition agreements; and importance and status of twenty-three transition practice items. The instrument was mailed to …

Predicting Categorical Diagnoses Using A Dimensional Approach: Comparing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Oppositional Defiant Disorder, David Lee Vanhorn Jan 1994

Predicting Categorical Diagnoses Using A Dimensional Approach: Comparing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Oppositional Defiant Disorder, David Lee Vanhorn

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Historically, there have been two major approaches to the classification of childhood psychopathology, the categorical and dimensional approaches. The purpose of the present study was to compare an example of each of these approaches (DSM-III-R and Child Behavior Checklist, respectively), exploring how information from the CBC can be used to differentiate between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and a clinical control. The present study also focused on predicting diagnostic category group membership using a subset of variables from the Child Behavior Checklist. Subjects were 46 Euro-American males between the ages of 4 and 11, drawn from a population …

The Effects Of An Eight-Hour Affective Education Program On Fear Of Aids And Homophobia In Student Nurses, Frances Allen Brown Jan 1994

The Effects Of An Eight-Hour Affective Education Program On Fear Of Aids And Homophobia In Student Nurses, Frances Allen Brown

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Research was conducted to determine the relationship between fear of AIDS and homophobia, and to determine the effects of an eight-hour affective education program in reducing homophobia and fear of AIDS in associate degree nursing students (n = 22). The Neuman Systems Model guided the study and a portion of Bandura's social learning theory provided the framework for the education intervention; A quasi-experimental time-series design (pretest/posttest I/posttest II) with a control group was used. Instruments to measure homophobia and fear of AIDS were the Homophobia Scale and the Fear of AIDS Scale developed by Bouton and colleagues (1987); Within group …

Let Us Now Praise Famous Students: A Qualitative Study Of High School Students With Learning Disabilities, Judith Elizabeth Day Jan 1994

Let Us Now Praise Famous Students: A Qualitative Study Of High School Students With Learning Disabilities, Judith Elizabeth Day

Doctoral Dissertations

This study used qualitative methodology in order to gain understanding of the school lives of high school students with learning disabilities in the areas of reading and writing. Two resource room sections of students were observed, using methods of participant observation over a year long period and four case studies of students from these sections were conducted. Classroom work of all students was studied and special education files of those chosen as case studies were reviewed. Students and school personnel involved in the education of the students were interviewed.

Research findings suggested that, despite years of intervention, high school students …

Dancing On Razor Wire: Caring To Write And Writing To Care In A Women's Prison, Kathe Penfield Simons Jan 1994

Dancing On Razor Wire: Caring To Write And Writing To Care In A Women's Prison, Kathe Penfield Simons

Doctoral Dissertations

This qualitative study investigates the writing of women in prison as a tool to care for themselves and others. The inmates participated in a student-centered, socially contextualized, process writing class whereby they could write for their own purposes, and share and publish their writing. The study presents case studies of two women who were also involved in a peer-tutoring program (one serving as the tutor for the other) and who used their literacies extensively on their own time outside of the classroom.

Many of our nation's inmates are considered illiterate by standardized, school-based measures. Some participate in correctional education programs …

An Investigation Of Secondary School Instrumentalists' Responses To Wind Band Music Across Variables Present During An Aesthetic Response., Ricky Wynn Brooks Jan 1994

An Investigation Of Secondary School Instrumentalists' Responses To Wind Band Music Across Variables Present During An Aesthetic Response., Ricky Wynn Brooks

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate secondary school students' responses to wind band music. Four variables--attention to the stimulus, familiarity, intellectual response, and emotional response--identified in research as characteristics of an aesthetic response were examined. Junior high (n = 60) and high school (n = 60) band students were randomly assigned to one of two listening conditions. In order to isolate focus of attention, subjects in a focused listening condition indicated preferences while listening to each excerpt by operating a Continuous Response Digital Interface dial. Subjects in an unfocused listening condition listened to each excerpt in an unrestricted …

May I Speak? A Hermeneutic Conversation Of Secondary Students' Experiences Of Curriculum., Kathryn M. Benson Jan 1994

May I Speak? A Hermeneutic Conversation Of Secondary Students' Experiences Of Curriculum., Kathryn M. Benson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to allow for a phenomenological, hermeneutic treatment of students' experiences of curriculum. The foci of this study are to stake a claim for the students' situated positions within educational research and to provide spaces within academic research where students' voices might be heard concerning their experiences of curriculum. After posing the problem of a lack of students' perspectives in educational research, I present the study's methodology: a blending of Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics and van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenology. Terms which seem salient to the study are as follows: silence, voice, conversation, and experience. Categorical thematic …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to: describe Louisiana dislocated workers who participated in the Louisiana Job Link Center (LA JLC) at LSU by workplace literacy skills (reading, writing, computation), occupational interests, and the demographics of age-group, gender, educational level, and DOT code of last job; compare workplace literacy skills on selected demographics; and determine if workplace literacy skills are independent of occupational interests and selected demographics. A simple random sample of 232 dislocated workers was drawn from the accessible population. The data used in this study was obtained from a larger data base collected and held by the Director …

Cognition And Learning: The Implications Of A Situated Connectionist Perspective For Theory And Practice In Education., John A. St. Julien Jan 1994

Cognition And Learning: The Implications Of A Situated Connectionist Perspective For Theory And Practice In Education., John A. St. Julien

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation I attempt to construct a framework for an alternate theory of instruction, starting from the position that education has no theory of learning; instead, what passes for theories of learning are actually descriptions of the conditions under which knowledge is acquired. Descriptive theorizing does not serve education well because it is not likely, being a description of what is known told in terms of assumed categories, to be generative or adaptive. I question the naturalness of current assumptions about thought and learning by tracing the consolidation of the present discursive formation around a presumed unity of logic, …

Teachers' Perceptions Of Principal Style And Sense Of Autonomy In Differentially Effective Schools., Corinne Falterman Hebert Jan 1994

Teachers' Perceptions Of Principal Style And Sense Of Autonomy In Differentially Effective Schools., Corinne Falterman Hebert

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was threefold. Phase I involved a reconstruction of the Change Facilitator Style of Principal (CFSP) instrument developed by Bost and Ruch (1986). Phase II was an ex post facto study that investigated teachers' perceptions of their principals' change facilitator style and of their autonomy, and Phase III encompassed the collection of qualitative data. The questionnaire originally developed by Bost and Ruch (1985) had some inadequate psychometric properties. These inadequacies were uncovered and further explored by examining the frequency distributions of the items from a previous study, and by conducting a construct validation of the instrument. …
