An Historical Comparative Analysis Of The Ideology Of Selected Educational Reformers Of The 1950s And 1980s, Etta Lou Sellars

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This was a historical study which analyzed similarities and differences between selected reformers of the American education system during the decades of the 1950s and 1980s. These two decades were chosen because of similarities concerning competition between America and foreign countries: Russia in the fifties, and Japan, Germany, and Korea in the eighties. Two catalysts, Sputnik in 1957, and the Commission report A Nation at Risk in 1983, caused these years to be watershed years in American education. Three reformers from the fifties, Arthur Bestor, Hyman Rickover, and James Conant, were compared and contrasted with four reformers from the eighties, …

The study was designed to determine if incentive programs affect student grades, average daily attendance rates, and dropout rates in public, senior high schools in Indiana as perceived by the high school principal. The intent of the study was to determine whether a relationship existed between recognition, special privileges, and tangible awards relative to average daily attendance rates, dropout rates, the number of students generally earning As and Bs on report cards, and the number of students generally earning Cs and Ds as opposed to failing grades on report cards. Questionnaires were sent to all 231 senior high school principals; …

The Role Of Learning Style In The Recall Of Classroom Instruction, Jacqueline Ann Specht Jan 1994

The Role Of Learning Style In The Recall Of Classroom Instruction, Jacqueline Ann Specht

Digitized Theses

Research on learning from instruction has focused primarily on semantic and procedural rather than episodic memories by students. Martin (1993) hypothesized that episodic memories of students mediate learning from instructional interventions because of the personal associations carried with them. The present research investigated the role of episodic memories of Grade 6 students in mathematics instruction, especially with respect to the possible mediation of student learning. Individual differences in learning style, attitude toward learning, and knowledge were investigated as possible factors that affect recall of episodic memories from classroom instruction. Study 1 assessed the suitability of two learning style inventories for …

The Contribution Of Outcome Expectancies To Drinking Behaviour, Anne-Marie Wall Jan 1994

The Contribution Of Outcome Expectancies To Drinking Behaviour, Anne-Marie Wall

Digitized Theses

The present dissertation was conducted to gain a better theoretical understanding of the contribution of outcome expectancies to male undergraduate drinking behaviour. Two assumptions important to the construct validity of outcome expectancies were investigated: (1) outcome expectancies are situation-specific and (2) outcome expectancies are different from attitudes toward drinking.;In each of the four studies conducted in the first series of studies, environmental setting (i.e., bar vs. lab) was manipulated and a second variable was manipulated through instructional set. Specifically, expected beverage content (i.e., beer vs. soda pop), social context (i.e., alone, with friends, no explicit instructions), and level of intoxication …

The Use Of Genetic Information For Nonmedical Purposes, Mark A. Rothstein Jan 1994

The Use Of Genetic Information For Nonmedical Purposes, Mark A. Rothstein

Journal of Law and Health

When one thinks about the use of genetic information by third parties for nonmedical purposes, one of the first things that comes to mind is the question of how the third party can gain access to the information. There are three main ways. First, and most importantly, the third party may obtain records developed in the clinical setting. In other words, if someone wants a job or insurance, that person may be required to sign a release authorizing the third party to access those records. Second, the genetic records might be obtained through a genetic data bank. Third, the third …

Attitudes Toward Science And Science Teaching As Reflected In The Science Autobiographies Of Preservice Elementary Teachers, Stacey Ann Gauthier Jan 1994

Attitudes Toward Science And Science Teaching As Reflected In The Science Autobiographies Of Preservice Elementary Teachers, Stacey Ann Gauthier

Doctoral Dissertations

As part of a study of the preservice science education of elementary school teachers, data were collected from 80 prospective elementary teachers relative to their prior experiences with science both in and out of the formal setting of school. These data were obtained largely through the preservice teachers' science autobiographies as well as through informal interviews and correspondence secured throughout the course of the study.

The study explores the relationship between preservice elementary teachers' prior experiences with science and their expressed attitudes toward science and science teaching as they begin the formal study of elementary science pedagogy. The analysis represents …

Fourth- And Fifth-Grade Students As Problem Finders Within The Discourse Of Mediation, Judith Marie Ferrara Jan 1994

Fourth- And Fifth-Grade Students As Problem Finders Within The Discourse Of Mediation, Judith Marie Ferrara

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe from students' perspectives how a peer mediation program became part of one urban elementary school's culture during six months of program implementation. Peer mediation is a process which enables disputing students to voluntarily resolve conflicts with the help of a pair of trained student mediators and without the direct participation of adults. Descriptions of students' perceptions of the role of mediator and the mediation process grew from field notes, interview transcripts, video transcripts and print documentation gathered by the researcher in her roles as participant observer and mediation program coordinator/trainer.

The …

From Eighth-Grade To High School: A Story Of Enculturation And Adaptation, M Cyrene Wells Jan 1994

From Eighth-Grade To High School: A Story Of Enculturation And Adaptation, M Cyrene Wells

Doctoral Dissertations

In this study I describe and interpret the transition students made when they graduated from a process-oriented, learner-centered eighth grade to attend a traditional high school. I explore the students' shared understandings of school literacies, the climate of the two schools, and the adaptations students made to their new learning environment.

I gathered descriptive data during two years of participant observation among adolescents in the elementary and high school; conducted formal and informal interviews with students, teachers, administrators, parents, and community members; collected school and town documents; and analyzed students' school work. In order to compare the ethos of schools …

Patterns Of Peer Relations And Adjustment: A Longitudinal Follow-Up Study, Mary Louise Hennessy Blum Jan 1994

Patterns Of Peer Relations And Adjustment: A Longitudinal Follow-Up Study, Mary Louise Hennessy Blum

Doctoral Dissertations

The risk hypothesis proposes that problematic peer relations predict later maladjustment. Extensive research on the risk hypothesis provides evidence that the quality of peer relations is associated with adjustment. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the associations, concurrently and across time, among three distinct levels of peer relations (dyadic friendship, small group interactions, and sociometric status) and two perspectives of social/behavioral adjustment as assessed by parents and children. The study showed further support for the risk hypothesis that low peer group acceptance in the classroom, low prosocial non-interactions in the small group, low warmth and high conflict in …
