Personal Variables And Critical Incident Stress Among Correctional Officers, Robin L. Sanabria

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine whether personal variables including age, gender, length of correctional work experience, years ofEducation, and work locus of control predict levels of critical incident stress among correctional officers. Fifty-two federal correctional officers completed: (a) the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (Weiss & Marmar, 1997) to measure critical incident stress, (b) the Work Locus Control Scale (Spector, 1988) to measure work locus of control, and (c) a demographic questionnaire. The Student Self-Concept Scale (SSCS) (Gresham, Elliott, & Evans-Rernandez, 1993) was administered to assess the degree to which boys with ADHD differed from a standardized national sample of boys with respect to self-efficacy as outlined in Bandura's social learning theory. In addition, self-efficacy of third to sixth grade boys with ADHD and seventh to twelfth grade boys with ADHD was compared to determine whether self-efficacy differed in the two age groups, and the direction of the difference. …

This study evaluated the relationship of six parent and eight teacher rating scales to the T.O.V.A. measures of Inattention, Impulsivity, Response Time and Variability. Subjects consisted of 88 children 6 through 14 years of age, referred by teachers and parents to a school psychologist in a small midwestern community for evaluation of ADHD symptomatology. These students attended school at four public elementary schools and three private religious elementary schools. Sixty-eight subjects were males and twenty subjects were females. Each child was administered the T.O.V.A. by a school psychologist. Parents filled out the BASC:PRS, CPRS-48, and the ADHD Rating Scale. Teachers …

Ritual And Pedagogy : Teachers' Use Of Ritual In Pre-Primary Classroom Settings, Carmel Maloney

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Pre-primary teachers' daily organisation and routines are established through repetitive patterns of actions which become highly ritualised. This study examines how pre-primary teachers use ritual and how ritual structures teaching in pre-primary classroom settings and in doing so serves a pedagogical purpose for teachers. Describing forms and functions of ritual provides a way of examining and interpreting what teachers know and do and how they go about their work. The interpretive paradigm of qualitative methodology has been adopted for the study. Participant observation and structured interviews are used as the primary methods of conducting field work and collecting data. The …

Development And Standardization Of The School-Based Consultation Orientation Rating Scale, Susan Marie Wilczynski Jan 1997

Development And Standardization Of The School-Based Consultation Orientation Rating Scale, Susan Marie Wilczynski

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Behavioral and mental health approaches to consultation differ in theoretical foundation, interpersonal interaction style of the consultant, and identified source of problem assessment, interventions, and decision-making. These consultation approaches may yield different levels of consultation effectiveness. Studies conducted to date have not consistently found differences between these approaches in terms of consultation effectiveness. However, there have been methodological flaws in these studies. In order to determine if either approach yields better outcomes, a means of assessing consultation orientation (i.e., the theoretical approach endorsed by a psychologist) must be developed. The School-based Consultation Orientation Rating Scale (SCORS) was designed to measure …

A Study Of Social Support Variables In Three Stages Of Hiv-Illness, Urszula Izabela Klich

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Social Support (SS) has been shown to have an effect on health and well-being. Patients with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) are particularly vulnerable to stigmatization which may effect SS. This study examined the SS networks of 155 gay men with HIV. It was hypothesized that (a) perceived SS differs according to stage of HIV-illness and time since diagnosis, (b) there are select factors that are associated with variations in perceived SS, and (c) level of SS is predictive of future functional capacity and mental health. To assess SS, the Social Support Questionnaire based on the General Social Survey (1995) …

An Analysis Of The Transactional Distance In Asynchronous Telecourses At A Community College Using The Group Embedded Figures Test, Roger J. Brenner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Asynchronous distance education telecourses are the technological version of traditional correspondence courses. Students in asynchronous telecourses receive videos and printed material but they may not have any contact with the instructor or other students. This study analyzed the academic performance of 154 Southwest Virginia Community College students enrolled in 27 different telecourses during one semester. The purpose of this study was to determine if students' cognitive styles impacted their achievement in distance education courses. Students were given the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) which categorized the students as field dependent or field independent. A field dependent's cognitive style is one …

Relationships Between Selected Environmental Characteristics, Neighborhood Type, And School Achievement, Franklin Titus Iii Dec 1996

Relationships Between Selected Environmental Characteristics, Neighborhood Type, And School Achievement, Franklin Titus Iii

Student Work

The primary purpose of this study was to determine if neighborhood and school type help to predict 4th and 6th grade academic achievement above and beyond traditional socioeconomic status (SES) indices. A second purpose was to determine whether the findings of environmental effects research for smaller-size cities differ from studies which investigate larger urban centers. The study also sought to identify potential ways neighborhoods could be meaningfully classified in ways that might aid future research, and the possible presence of schools that succeed despite a profile that says they should not. Achievement test results of schools (N=61) from two Midwest …

Learning To Live With Conformity: Student Teachers' Reactions To Multiple Conformity Factors During Teaching Practice, Clive Mcgee

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper reports one aspect of a larger research project on the teaching practice experiences of staff, student teachers and associate teachers. The project is located in the School of Education at the University of Waikato, New Zealand, and early phases have already been reported in occasional papers and conference papers (Calder, Faire and Schon, 1993; Faire, 1994; Harold, 1994; McGee, Oliver and Carstensen, 1994.
