Investigating Teaching Strategies In Mathematics Classrooms : A Cd-Rom Resource Enabling Teachers To Explore Teaching Strategies In Mathematics Education, Tony John Herrington, Len Sparrow, Jan Herrington, Ron Oliver
Research outputs pre 2011
Teaching mathematics has traditionally followed a standard pattern across the world. Students are placed in classrooms where they are seated individually, are required to listen passively and observe the teacher demonstrating mathematical procedure and then s1 end extensive time practicing the newly acquired ski ll s. Generally the content being taught comprises mathematical facts and skills taught sequentially in the order presented by a textbook. Students are then assessed by unseen pencil and paper tests for the purpose of grading and ranking. This cycle is then repeated with another mathematical topic which is viewed by students as discrete from the …

Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The Government of Kenya is committed to providing equal education opportunities to all of its citizens. As a result, there has been rapid development in education since independence to ensure that as many children as possible enroll in schools and complete their studies. This study was carried out primarily to get a holistic picture of the school environment for adolescents and other relevant factors that might interfere with the whole learning/teaching process. Special attention was paid to the education of girls and the factors that might lead to their dropping out of school. The study was conducted jointly by the …

Getting Ready For Total Joint Replacement Surgery: A Pre-Operative Education Program, Jason R. Delaney
Theses
Today's health care system is in a state of constant flux attempting to merge, decrease jobs and increase profits. A method to accomplish the goal for increased profits is to have a decline in the number of days any patient remains in the hospital. One such facility attempting to achieve this goal is a 340 bed acute care hospital in the Midwest.
ln the view of the author it seems possible for the physical and occupational therapy departments to have the ability to improve outcomes and decrease the total amount of time any patient remains hospitalized. With this in mind, …

Policy Recommendations For A Multicultural Curriculum For All Elementary Schools In The Republic Of South Africa, Motladi Angeline Setlhako
Policy Recommendations For A Multicultural Curriculum For All Elementary Schools In The Republic Of South Africa, Motladi Angeline Setlhako
Graduate Research Papers
This literature review explored the system of education in South Africa. The exploration provided the background information about the unequal and segregated system of education which led to student uprisings in 1976. The curriculum became an area of contestation, and was thus attacked by leading educators, parents, teachers, and students. The people of South Africa called for a single, national, unitary system of education for all South African students. A multicultural education was proposed to unify a deeply divided nation and to support the new nation being born.
Multicultural literature was reviewed. The barriers to implementing a multicultural curriculum include …
Gender Differences In The Schooling Experiences Of Adolescents In Low-Income Countries: The Case Of Kenya, Barbara Mensch, Cynthia B. Lloyd
Gender Differences In The Schooling Experiences Of Adolescents In Low-Income Countries: The Case Of Kenya, Barbara Mensch, Cynthia B. Lloyd
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Little research on education in developing countries has focused on adolescent issues at the same time, despite the fact that a growing proportion of young people are spending some time in school during the phase of their lives between puberty and marriage, there is little research on schooling as a key dimension of the adolescent experience. This paper examines the school environment in Kenya and the potential ways it can help or hinder adolescents. We focus on gender differences with a view toward illuminating some of the factors that may present particular obstacles or opportunities for girls. The paper begins …

Reproductive Health
In an expansion of its efforts to fight a growing HIV epidemic and high teenage pregnancy rates, the Government of Botswana is encouraging nongovernmental organizations (NG0s) to be more active in providing reproductive health (RH) services, and especially HIV/AIDS education and care, to adolescents. NG0s have the potential to assume a larger role as health and education providers as well as implement pilot projects that the public health sector could learn from to increase the availability and quality of RH services for youth. The Africa OR/TA Project II designed and implemented the Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) to assist youth-oriented NG0s …

The three volumes which make up this study describe in detail how a number of teachers in different school situations in different parts of Australia undertook the assessment of young children's development of English as a second language. Most of the teachers worked in pre-primary to Year 3 classrooms where the majority of the children were aged between five and eight years. The majority worked in a mainstream context in which the number of children speaking English as a second language (ESL) varied from more than half the class to two or three students. About a third of the teachers …

(1997) Some Reflections On Inquiry, Community And Philosophy, Laurance J. Splitter
Collected Papers of Laurance J. Splitter
Not all communities of inquiry are communities of philosophical inquiry. Still, there is something special and intrinsic about philosophy when it comes to the community of inquiry. Think of Matthew Lipman's oft-repeated claim that philosophy is the discipline that teaches children to think in the disciplines. And remember that one of his (and Dewey's) greatest insights was that children could be members of a community of inquiry. I should like to put these ideas together in the following way: irrespective of whether the inquiry engaged in by a community is philosophical, the community itself is philosophical. In short, every community …

College of Education Multicultural & Diversity Newsletter
The emerging philosophy of the Multicultural and Diversity Committee is that excellence in education cannot be achieved without educational equity for all who enter our schools. This includes (but is not limited to) females, males, people of color, people who live in poverty, people who live alternative lifestyles, people with disabilities, people with a language background other than English, people of all ages, and people who have recently immigrated to the United States. Educational equity is defined by processes that work against marginalization and foster knowledge of and respect for the diverse nature of our population.
Instructional Environments For Technology Inservice Education, Karen Jane Grove
Instructional Environments For Technology Inservice Education, Karen Jane Grove
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study examines different instructional formats for providing inservice education on classroom technology applications to elementary teachers. An intensive weekend workshop format was compared with a traditionally paced format for inservice education. Results are discussed in terms of measurable changes in teacher growth in the use of the applications and growth in the use of the applications with students. A secondary purpose was to determine if there was a relationship between learning styles and success in these two environments. Teachers' learning styles were identified using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. The results of the study indicate that intensive models of inservice …

The Relationship Between Media Exposure, Personal Experience And Education On The Public's Perceptions Of People With Disabilities: A Correlational Study, Melissa Lynn Reichley
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The Relationship Between Media Exposure, Personal Experience and Education on the Public's Perceptions of Disabilities seeks to determine whether there is any correlation between people's opinions about people with disabilities (PWDs), and their media consumption, education, and experience or contact with PWDs. The author compares such perceptions between respondents with and without disabilities. While research suggests nondisabled people view people with disabilities to varying degrees of negativity depending on the level and type of disability and accompanying social stigma attached, this researcher questions whether frequency of media exposure is having a positive influence on media consumers' perceptions of PWDs (which …

The Influence Of Violence Upon Academic Achievement Among African American First Time College Students., Diana F. Kelly
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examined the relationship between early exposure to violence--both personal and community--and the later academic achievement of African American first time college students. The study incorporated several variables that were thought to impinge upon the academic achievement process. Specifically, those variables were divided into several groups: background factors (socioeconomic status, high school academic record, personal and community violence exposure), student characteristics (locus of control, educational aspirations and expectations), and university characteristics (campus safety, academic and social integration). Student achievement was measured by students' expected grade point average, as indicated on a student questionnaire. University administrators, professors, and researchers who …

Academic Discipline, Mentoring, And The Career Commitment Of Women Faculty., Gloria Tara Nye
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Women continue to be underrepresented as faculty at U.S. universities, especially in the physical sciences and engineering. The belief that only women can adequately serve as role models and mentors for other women may be a roadblock to progress for women in disciplines where they are underrepresented. This study of women faculty investigates how female career commitment is influenced by academic discipline and mentoring. The survey responses of sixty-six tenure-track women faculty were used to obtain data for both science or engineering and non-science or engineering academic disciplines at three public Ph.D. granting research universities. The women faculty in science …

An Investigation Of Consistency Between Theoretical Orientations To Reading And Planning For Reading Instruction: A Three-Year Study., Norma Jean Paris
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this three-year study was to investigate the participants' theoretical orientations to reading over time. By presenting an in-depth description of the thoughts and actions, as related to the research questions, of nine student teachers during their student teaching experience, and again three years later as elementary teachers, this study provided valuable insights into the degree to which a well-defined theoretical orientation to reading is internalized and how it manifests in classroom practices. The research questions that were investigated included the durability of theoretical orientations to reading, consistency between theoretical orientations and planning for reading instruction, and the …
Visualizing Autobiography: Intersections Of Gender, Representation, Curriculum Theory., Anne Elizabeth Pautz
Visualizing Autobiography: Intersections Of Gender, Representation, Curriculum Theory., Anne Elizabeth Pautz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Defined by customs of femininity, women who transcend those definitions find it difficult to represent themselves in a comprehensible manner. The contradictions between the actual activities of life and the demands of femininity require woman to adopt unique approaches to self-representation in order to be accepted. Tied to the biological functions of their bodies through images in the media and social institutions, as well as their internalized images, women often find trying to represent themselves beyond or against their body problematic. The female body is presented as controller of destiny, both through beauty and motherhood requirements. Women often create representations …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this exploratory study was three-fold. First, a conceptual framework was developed to link innovation and organizational effectiveness in higher education settings through the mediating variables of faculty decision-making deprivation, self-efficacy, organizational efficacy, receptivity to change and resistance to change. Second, original instrumentation was developed to measure faculty receptivity and resistance to change and academic unit head perspectives of their unit's effectiveness. Third, linkages between the variables were examined through the collection and analysis of data using structure equation modeling and appropriate variable comparisons. The sample consisted of all faculty from five traditional academic units at all 59 …
