Clinical Laboratory Science University Faculty Learning Types And The Use Of Information Technology In The Classroom., Cynthia Susan Handley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study was designed to explore the status of learning types of clinical laboratory science university faculty and their use of information technology in the classroom. Traditionally clinical laboratory science education has been lecture and lab sessions. However, with the advent of the information age, professors are moving from the role of lecturer to facilitator. Some professors are in tune with the new information tools while others are not interested at all. This research had a two-fold purpose: (1) to explore who was using technology in the classroom and identify what they were using, and (2) to search for a …

Computer-Assisted Instruction: Enhancements For Language-Learning Applications., William Lawrence Harrell Jr Jan 1998

Computer-Assisted Instruction: Enhancements For Language-Learning Applications., William Lawrence Harrell Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Presently, computer-assisted instruction is in use in many educational venues. Unfortunately, the application of computer-assisted language learning at a distance has virtually been ignored. This is an opportunity that needs to be explored. In order to do so, a number of considerations must be attended to. First, effective monitor display design is critical for the optimal presentation of distance learning material. Second, gender and equity factors that impact computer use must be understood to minimize the detrimental effects they might have on computer-assisted distance learning. Third, the needs of students involved with the particularly-demanding application of distance learning principles of …

Vocational Education And Recidivism At The Louisiana Correctional Institute For Women., Henry Elbert Sanders Jr Jan 1998

Vocational Education And Recidivism At The Louisiana Correctional Institute For Women., Henry Elbert Sanders Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recidivism is a phenomenon causing growing concern. When released criminals return to crime, the costs become immeasurable. Victims can never be adequately compensated for personal losses, and the nation cannot halt the spiraling costs of maintaining prisons housing mostly repeat offenders. The nation is spending upwards from 98 billion dollars on crime, annually. Public opinion opposes education for inmates, yet, with the nation's prisons operating near capacity, a millennium approaches that promises another wave of prison construction resulting in exponential leaps in the costs of incarceration. A marketing concept asserts that attracting people to a product is half the battle. …

Logistic Regression And Item Response Theory: Estimation Item And Ability Parameters By Using Logistic Regression In Irt., Necati Engec

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the utility of logistic regression procedures as a means of estimating item and ability parameters in unidimensional and multidimensional item response theory models for dichotomous and polytomous data instead of IRT models. Unlike the IRT models, single logistic regression model can be easily extended from unidimensional models to multidimensional models, from dichotomous response data to polytomous response data and the assumptions such as all slopes are the same and intercept is zero are unnecessary. Based on the findings of this study, the following preliminary conclusions can be drawn: Item and ability parameters …

Are Schools Teaching Girls To Be Leaders?, Amy L. Schollin Jan 1998

Are Schools Teaching Girls To Be Leaders?, Amy L. Schollin

Honors Theses

Are schools teaching girls to be leaders? My belief is that we must examine issues concerning our young women, their educational experiences, opportunities they are offered, people they are exposed to and their life in school. There appears to be a lack of emphasis on leadership and women. Without addressing this issue in the early stages of a young girl's development, we will continue to feed the notion that male standards are the norm, My initial question is intended to generate an in depth look at the impact of teachers, curriculum, students and the environment on the development of leadership …

The Role Of Good Nutrition. Good Physicians And The Advantages Of Alternative Medicine: An Educational Program For Senior Adults, Violet Connoyer Jan 1998

The Role Of Good Nutrition. Good Physicians And The Advantages Of Alternative Medicine: An Educational Program For Senior Adults, Violet Connoyer

Theses

This study examines previous and forthcoming knowledge of ancient medicinal remedies and solutions which provide and enable]e the acquisition of better and safer health care. Because of political reasons which appear to be dominant over all others, this inherent knowledge continues to seemingly remain obscure within the medical world and within our society. Continued education plays a vital role in the assessment of health care today because statistics stress that too many Eves are daily being snuffed out because of careless and improper drug administration and insidious drug reactions which follow thereafter. As a result, many people are striving to …

Continuing Classroom Conversation Beyond The Four Whys, Jeffrey W. Stempel, Bailey Kuklin Jan 1998

Continuing Classroom Conversation Beyond The Four Whys, Jeffrey W. Stempel, Bailey Kuklin

Scholarly Works

LAW school classes regularly prove Santayana's aphorism. Although nearly every law teacher desires to keep discussion focused and forward-moving, there are more than a few moments of thundering silence experienced in the classroom. Most of us adjust to this inevitability by positing some pedagogical virtue to still air and contenting ourselves with the knowledge that conversation-stopping “whys?” are usually delivered by us as teachers rather than the students. Perhaps we are underappreciative of the value discomfitting silence has, but we generally prefer that the conversation continue, that we miss the opportunity to feel simultaneously smug and uncomfortable, and that students …

Workshop On Youth Across Asia, John Townsend, Ann P. Mccauley, Kokila Agarwal Jan 1998

Workshop On Youth Across Asia, John Townsend, Ann P. Mccauley, Kokila Agarwal

Reproductive Health

The issues facing youth across Asia are as diverse as the cultures they represent. Issues involving schooling, employment, sexuality, and marriage take on increased significance for young people aged 10–24 in every country. Decisions made by youth and their families will dramatically affect their individual welfare. Few programs outside of public education systems exist at a sufficiently large scale to assist youth. Decisions to stay in school, opportunities to learn skills and manage resources, the exercise of sexual responsibility, and the process of family formation all impact both personal welfare and community development. Gender-equality issues compound many of the problems. …

All subjects completed a physical activity questionnaire (which differentiated between work, sport, leisure and total physical activity) and a series of five flexibility tests. Four of the five flexibility tests were completed with the use of a goniometer which measured shoulder flexion, hip flexion, knee flexion and ankle dorsiflexion. The sit and reach test was used to assess hamstringlumbar flexibility. After analyzing the data by using Pearson …

Gendered Expectations: An Exploration Of Identity And Power In The Life Of Katherine Of Aragon., Jennifer R. Daum Jan 1998

Gendered Expectations: An Exploration Of Identity And Power In The Life Of Katherine Of Aragon., Jennifer R. Daum

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

How is it that Katherine of Aragon, a woman seemingly destined for a major impact on world events, has been relegated to the role of scorned wife and stubborn obstacle to historical progress? Beliefs about women’s roles limited Katherine while she was alive and influenced historical interpretations about her after her death. Katherine’s own interpretation of her role as a wife and mother evolved out of her perceptions of the opinions of others. The role that others had created for her was rigidly interpreted and internalized by Katherine. By not allowing herself to be used as a pawn by either …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Foreign Education On Leadership : Mary Robinson, Benazir Bhutto, And Shimon Peres, Maia Carter Jan 1998

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Foreign Education On Leadership : Mary Robinson, Benazir Bhutto, And Shimon Peres, Maia Carter

Honors Theses

The world today. going into the twenty-first century is much "smaller" than the world in 1900. Most scholars, business leaders, and politicians would agree that we are all part of an increasingly global community. The fax machine, telephone, and internet allow for instantaneous communications with people around the world. In addition, most professionals are forced to come into contact with members of other cultures, whether it be for academic research or commence. This study arises out of the question, what implications does globalization have for leaders, and how are leaders affected by extended experiences, such as study abroad, in which …

Struggling With The Devil: A Case Study Of Values In Conflict, Rosemary C. Salomone Jan 1998

Struggling With The Devil: A Case Study Of Values In Conflict, Rosemary C. Salomone

Faculty Publications

(Excerpt)

In recent years, with increasing frequency, the media has drawn national attention to communities caught in gridlock over value conflicts in the schools. From Lake County, Florida, where a conservative Christian school board required teaching that American culture is superior to others, to New York City, where a controversial multicultural curriculum and the now infamous book Heather Has Two Mommies precipitated the Chancellor's downfall, these stories capture our imagination. Nevertheless, regardless of where we stand on the political spectrum, we often dismiss such compelling conflicts as isolated and distant incidents, never to be replicated with any real or lasting …
