Interdisciplinary Holocaust Curriculum Guide For The Middle School, Shana Golding
Interdisciplinary Holocaust Curriculum Guide For The Middle School, Shana Golding
Honors Capstones
The object of any curriculum guide is to present educators with a working tool. The Interdisciplinary Holocaust Curriculum Guide for the Middle School provides a framework for teaching the Holocaust. The rationale for developing this curriculum guide is to offer educators a resource from which they can create their own lesson plans. I developed the guide on the premise that the goal of Holocaust education is to empower students with the knowledge to prevent another Holocaust from occurring. My philosophy, as well as the activities presented in this guide, reflect this. In keeping with the philosophy of the National Middle …
Three Generations Of Welfare Mothers Are Enough: A Disturbing Return To Eugenics In The Recent "Workfare" Law, Nicole Huberfeld
Three Generations Of Welfare Mothers Are Enough: A Disturbing Return To Eugenics In The Recent "Workfare" Law, Nicole Huberfeld
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
In this Article, Nicole Huberfeld examines recent changes in the welfare system, and considers whether these changes are consistent with the stated goals of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996. Turning to the history of “workfare,” Huberfeld reveals parallels between the reasoning of its proponents, and that of eugenicists. She argues that workfare mirrors eugenics theory because its proponents are imposing particular white, middleclass values upon the poor as a condition to providing them benefits: Through her comparison of workfare and eugenics, Huberfeld cautions against legislation that seeks to regulate the private conduct and personal decisions …

Retail/Wholesale Trade Employment Directly Related To Population Change In The Nonmetro Great Plains, Adamchak J. Donald, Bloomquist E. Leonard, Bausman Kent, Qureshi Rashida
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
During 1950-90, the nonmetro civilian labor force declined except during the 1970’s. In the 1970’s, nonmetro manufacturing increased substantially, and the baby boom generation entered the labor force. By contrast, the retail/wholesale labor force increased in every decade except for the 1980’s. Several factors could have contributed to the decline in the retail/wholesale labor force, including population decline and the effects of large retail establishments.
Tear Down These Walls: New Genre Public Art And Art Education, Gaye Leigh Green
Tear Down These Walls: New Genre Public Art And Art Education, Gaye Leigh Green
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Public genre art education follows the lead established by the professional art world to engage the public with artforms that depart from traditional media usage and intentions to encourage collaboration, the demystification of art processes, and societal reconstruction. Termed new genre public art, Suzanne Lacy (1995) described in Mapping the Terrain: New Genre Public Art a new sensibility exhibited in the past three decades by artists who deal with the most profound issues of our time “in manners that resemble political and social activity but is distinguished by its aesthetic sensibility”.

An Intergenerational Literacy Project For Migrant Families, Sandra E. Harmening, Amy C. Kiesz
All Graduate Projects
The relationship between student achievement and parental involvement was reviewed and found to be significant. A model project was developed to include seven migrant families intergenerationally within the context of the classroom. The purpose was to enhance the relationship between students and parents/guardians and between these low literacy families and the school institution. The result was projected to be a better understanding of each family's heritage, an increase in volunteerism at the school site, more interest in school work and accomplishment, and the possible residual effect of parental desire to improve their literacy skills.

Almost from the inception of the student loan program in the 1960's, there has been speculation about the impact of debtload on student decisions about attending college, persisting in college, and life decisions after graduation. However, little research has been done on this area. As Congress debates funding higher education, the question arises once more of the impact of loans on college student attendance. This study examines the influence of student debtload on college persistence, for the time periods 1986-87 and 1995-96, almost an entire decade. Using the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS) of 1986-87 and the National Postsecondary …

Incentive Schemes For School Attendance In Rural Bangladesh, Sajeda Amin, Gilda Sedgh
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This paper examines the impact of two incentive schemes on school attendance in rural Bangladesh: a food-for-education program for poor primary school children and a female secondary school scholarship scheme. The data come from an in-depth village study, before and after the programs went into effect. Both programs provide direct financial incentives to families to send their children to and keep them in school. The data also allow for an assessment of an informal school program sponsored by BRAC, a national non-governmental institution, at the study sites. School enrollment in the target population increased more rapidly than would have been …
The Future Of Headteachers As Educational Leaders In Pakistan: Implications For Pedagogical Leadership, Muhammad Memon
The Future Of Headteachers As Educational Leaders In Pakistan: Implications For Pedagogical Leadership, Muhammad Memon
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
Literature on educational management and leadership (e.g. Leithwood et al. 1994, Grace, 1995 and Segiovanni, 1998) suggests the significance of the role of headteachers as educational leaders in the western context. Whereas in the eastern context generally and particularly in Pakistan, the role of headteachers as educational leaders of the future is not yet fully understood and recognized. The current practice of headteachers in Pakistan seems to focus on supervision, monitoring and evaluation of teachers and students work, underpinning the style of 'bureaucratic / mechanistic leaders'. At present, headteachers spend most of their time on maintaining status quo through administration …

A Follow-Up Of Professional Development Of Educational Leaders: Implications For School Improvement, Muhammad Memon, Fauzia Reza
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
The paper presents an account of the processes, outcomes and challenges associated with a follow-up study after the completion of a professional development programme in educational management for senior education officers from Sindh. Prior to induction to their jobs, the district education officers, principals of elementary colleges of education and higher secondary schools are not formally exposed to any new educational management and leadership practices. As a result, most of them remain unaware of the tasks and demands of their role, therefore, they tend to maintain a status quo position rather than engaging in change strategies for improving the quality …

Educational Technology And State Reform: Examining The First-Year Impact Of Louisiana's State Technology Policy On Public School Districts., Jeffrey Paul Gagne
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
During the 1990's educational technology became a major educational policy issue for every state (White, 1997; Education Commission of the States, 1997; National Council of State Legislators, 1996; Trotter, 1997). By early 1998, all 50 states had state-level technology plans in various stages of implementation, and state funding for educational technologies was rapidly increasing across the country (Trotter, 1997). The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of recently enacted Louisiana state-level technology reforms on public school district technology efforts between the 1996--97 and 1997--98 school years. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to collect data, creating …

Using Mathematical Modeling For The Prediction Of Success In Developmental Math., Kathy Rogers Autrey
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This exploratory study was primarily designed to determine the possibility of developing a discriminant model to predict success in developmental mathematics. The sample included 402 students enrolled in a developmental math class at Northwestern State University, a small public school in North Louisiana, in the fall semester of 1996. Demographic, achievement and attitudinal variables were used in the development of the model. High school GPA, social enrichment scores from the College Student Inventory, and black were factors identified as significant in the model. Although limited in its predictive ability, the model does provide faculty and advisors with additional information to …

Using Academic And Demographic Variables To Predict Success In The General Education Curriculum., Steven Giles Horton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Student success and attrition in all levels of education is becoming a more important issue in an age where education dollars are diminishing while various schools of higher learning are increasing. As a result, schools are reevaluating their current programs of study in an attempt to determine if both students and universities are fulfilling their respective goals. This process of reevaluation has several fundamental considerations, one of these which is addressed in this study--the effectiveness of prerequisite requirements and other demographic variables on predicting the success of students in courses in the general education curriculum. The purpose of this study, …
