Those considerations include accommodation of students with disabilities, the student-teacher relationship, discipline, safe-schools, and a framework for analysis: the new 3 R’s in education: Rights, Responsibilities and Relationships. Data Warehousing And Decision Making In Higher Education In The United States, David Lester Heise

Dissertations

Problem. Compared to the business world, higher education has a lower level of acceptance and a lower rate of adoption of data warehousing for decision making. Studies into the way data warehouses are used in higher education and the extent to which they are used are hard to find. Accordingly, this research examines the use of data warehousing in higher education and its role in decision making.

Method. Internet survey research method was used in this study. I asked college and university presidents to provide me with contact details of senior decision makers and technology managers from their institutions. …

Scholarly And Scientific Boycotts Of Israel: Abusing The Academic Enterprise, Kenneth Lasson Jan 2006

Scholarly And Scientific Boycotts Of Israel: Abusing The Academic Enterprise, Kenneth Lasson

All Faculty Scholarship

Veritas vos liberabit, chanted the scholastics of yesteryear. The truth will set you free, echo their latter-day counterparts in the academy.

Universities like themselves to be perceived as places of culture in a chaotic world, protectors of reasoned discourse, peaceful havens for learned professors roaming orderly quadrangles and pondering higher thoughts-a community of scholars seeking knowledge in sylvan tranquility.

The real world of higher education, of course, is not quite so wonderful.

Instead of a feast for unfettered intellectual curiosity, much of the modern academy is dominated by curricular deconstructionists who disdain western civilization, people who call themselves multiculturalists but, …

Instructional Strategies To Increase Motivation, Close The Achievement Gap, And Help Students Reach Their Potential: A Review Of Literature, Nora Alder, Susan P. Mckelvey

MERC Publications

Closing the achievement gap between African, Native, and Hispanic American and their European and Asian American counterparts has been a concern for decades. Recently, the persistence of this issue has become more pressing due to several factors. First, high stakes accountability testing places demands on students to demonstrate mastery of material across disciplines in order to successfully complete high school. Second, some states have already reported an increase dropout rate when students feel that they cannot pass the tests or will be retained in their grade level (Clark, et al., 2000). Third, the society’s economic structure in the new millennium …

Missed Opportunities: How The Courts Struck Down The Florida School Voucher Program, Irina D. Manta Jan 2006

Missed Opportunities: How The Courts Struck Down The Florida School Voucher Program, Irina D. Manta

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Florida's intermediate appellate court and Supreme Court recently struck down a state-wide school voucher program that allows children in failing public schools to use government monies to attend private schools of their parents' choosing. The intermediate appellate court based its reasoning on a state constitutional provision that prohibits aid to religious institutions, thus refusing to recognize the discriminatory nature of the provision or at least denying that it should apply to the voucher program. Rather than correcting the holding below, the Florida Supreme Court decided not to address the issue altogether and instead incorrectly interpreted an unrelated section of the …

The outcomes of a school-wide positive behavior support program at a rural elementary school were evaluated to determine the effects of a school-wide program on the behavior of students. A program evaluation was conducted using student office referrals that were collected over a six year period. The results indicated that student office referrals significantly decreased from Year 1 to Year 6 and that specific behaviors of aggression and inappropriate language also decreased significantly from Year 1 to Year 6. Data were investigated to indicate trends in total office referrals by gender, grade, month, location, and problem behavior.

Failing The Future: Development Objectives, Human Rights Obligations And Gender Violence In Schools, Erika George Jan 2006

Failing The Future: Development Objectives, Human Rights Obligations And Gender Violence In Schools, Erika George

Faculty Scholarship

Recognizing that school based gender violence is a global phenomenon that has remained largely unexplored, despite numerous international commitments to promote girls’ education, this chapter outlines recent international development policy objectives and priorities relating to gender equality and education. It then positions these development priorities against the international human rights legal framework. Finally, the chapter concludes that failure to bridge the gap between development priorities and human rights principles by fully appreciating the costs and consequences of school-based gender violence in terms of the discrimination that it is will ensure global failure to achieve gender equality in education well into …

An Empirical Investigation Of The Intercultural Sensitivity Of Student Affairs Practitioners At A Midwest Metropolitan University, Daniel Kent Kelso

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A focus on intercultural sensitivity in all areas of human endeavor is critical for future success at creating an enlightened and competent global citizenry. This is especially true for postsecondaryEducation. Very little research exists within the intercultural literature that addresses faculty or staff intercultural sensitivity within a college environment. Research is practically non-existent regarding the intercultural sensitivity of the student affairs practitioner. Specific challenges face college and university practitioners as they attempt to accomplish the diversity missions of their institutions. These challenges cannot be overcome unless those governing and manipulating higherEducation environments are themselves sensitive to cultural differences and possess …

As we move through our daily lives, the cogency of the world shifts and changes. Many constructs exist to explain and account for how we view and interact with our environment. Education is where our understandings become formalized and are challenged. To this end, a plethora of pedagogical tools are made available to aid educators in illuminating the world(s) around and within each student. However, there is always room for new ways of presenting information, concepts, and ideas. I put forth the mathematical trope of asymptotes as a new pedagogical tool.
