Family Strengths, Stress, And Well -Being Among Troubled And Well Adjusted Adolescents, Leah A. Powell

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this doctoral research was to determine whether family stress covaried with family strength. In addition, the relationship between family strengths and family stress was investigated as a function of residential group home (RGH) placement and non-residential placement. The family strengths of resources, coping, and well-being, and family stress were measured for 17 RGH parent and adolescent dyads and 22 non-RGH parent and adolescent dyads. Thirty-nine families participated. It was hypothesized that family stress decreases with increases of family strengths. Novice Special Educators' Perceptions And Use Of Research -Validated Classroom Practices For Students With High Incidence Disabilities, Melissa L. Jones

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the implementation of NCLB (2001) and IDEIA (2004), the research-to-practice gap in specialEducation has garnered increased attention. This qualitative investigation involved a collective case study that explored the phenomenon through the eyes of 10 novice special educators. Specifically, the study sought to determine the teachers' perceptions of research in general as well as their use of six broad practices that have been validated by research for students with disabilities. Interviews, observations, and self-report measures resulted in findings that indicate low rates of implementation as well as a lack of alignment between the educators' words and actions. Finally, barriers and …

Stressors Among First-Generation College Students: A Retrospective Inquiry, Maryann Therese Latus

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A multiple-case-study qualitative approach was used to examine the stressors among first-generation college students. The students were in their senior year at a medium-sized Midwestern public university. The researcher conducted two focus groups and a total of 10 in-depth interviews with first-generation college students. Several themes emerged from the data that was collected. The overarching themes that served as the primary framework for this study were stressors related to family, friends, and the university. One of the major themes, how the participants coped with their particular stressors, is discussed in detail. The differences that were found between this group of …

Maximizing The Educational Effects Of Collaborative Learning: The Role Of Vested Interest, Christina Partin Jan 2006

Maximizing The Educational Effects Of Collaborative Learning: The Role Of Vested Interest, Christina Partin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study, using a quasi-experimental research design, investigates connections between pedagogy and social psychology by applying social psychological theories of group work and interaction to collaborative learning, a current trend in pedagogical techniques. It was hypothesized that by creating a setting in which students would be evaluated based in part on the performance of their peers would improve their individual performance. The incentive (a percentage of their grade) would hypothetically motivate students to teach their peers effectively; thus they would be taking a vested-interest role in becoming a co-teacher to their partner. This study was implemented by examining two sections …

Women, Engineering And Research: Providing Choice And Balance, Cecilia Chan, Mike Murphy

Conference papers

“Research cannot reach its full potential when half the population is excluded from its activities”1. Recent statistics of women graduating in science and engineering indicated an increase (a slow increase) but the numbers moving through to completion of PhD and careers in academia or industry remain quite low. Statistics on women in professorial and senior positions within the engineering sector also remains low. The educated workforce produced in Ireland by its education system is acknowledged as a key factor in attracting international investment to the …

Aiding Foster Children In Their Construction Of Self: Clinical Intervention Strategies For Children In Care, Cheryl Regal Jan 2006

Aiding Foster Children In Their Construction Of Self: Clinical Intervention Strategies For Children In Care, Cheryl Regal

Master's Theses and Capstones

This thesis looks at the development of the self within foster children and examines clinical intervention strategies that focus on the internal world of the child. Using architectural metaphors, this thesis aims to change the perspective within which clinicians think about the experience of the foster child and their view of self. Within this framework, the counseling experience works to bring the foster child out from behind their protective walls and journeys with the child through their past and present histories. Throughout this journey, the clinician joins with the child and allows an attachment bond to develop in order for …

The Relationship Between The Virginia Standards Of Learning Tests And The New Psat/Nmsqt, Susan P. Mckelvey Jan 2006

The Relationship Between The Virginia Standards Of Learning Tests And The New Psat/Nmsqt, Susan P. Mckelvey

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationships between the SOL End-of-Course Reading and Writing tests and the new PSAT/NMSQT Verbal and Writing tests. The PSAT/NMSQT Writing tests were administered for the first time in October 2004. Two linear regression analyses were utilized, with PSAT/NMSQT Verbal and writing scores, gender, race, and special education as the independent variables, and SOL End-of-Course Reading and Writing scores as the dependent variables. Additionally, two logistic regression analyses were employed with the same variables to predict whether or not a student would pass the SOL End-of-Course Reading and Writing tests. Results indicated that the PSAT/NMSQT Verbal and …

Educators' Perceptions Of Mobile Students And The Interventions That Assist Them, Timothy Bruce Bostic, Mary Angela Coleman Jan 2006

Educators' Perceptions Of Mobile Students And The Interventions That Assist Them, Timothy Bruce Bostic, Mary Angela Coleman

MERC Publications

In the educational climate of no Child Left Behind (NCLB), school personnel are searching for any means available to help all children succeed academically and meet state standards. School teachers and administrators in Virginia are no different. All schools and school districts, in Virginia and across the country, must demonstrate through adequate yearly progress (AYP) that children are achieving state standards of education. AYP requires that schools no only show that all students are achieving state standards but also that disaggregated groups of students (e.g. black students, speakers of English as a second language, special education students) are meeting standards …

The Relationship Between Classroom Assessment Practices And Student Motivation And Engagement: A Literature Review, Kathleen M. Cauley, Gina Pannanzzo, Lisa Abrams, James H. Mcmillan

MERC Publications

Assessment is becoming increasingly important in classrooms as school systems respond to federal and state testing mandates. The increasing emphasis on assessment surely impacts student outcomes such as engagement and motivation, and ultimately achievement. While it is clear that classroom assessment is receiving more attention as a critical component of teaching that directly affects student learning, there is still a lack of systematic research that addresses many classroom assessment issues. There is some evidence that effective formative assessment enhances achievement (Black & William, 1998) and that curtain grading practices result in greater student motivation and achievement (Brookhart, 2004b). However, researchers …
