A Four-Stage Program Of Enrichment In Reading For Gifted Junior High School Students, Mina Winifred Welch

The needs of gifted students and strategies for meeting those needs were studied. A four- stage enrichment model was designed, accompanied by a teacher's guide for implementation of a sample application of the model at the seventh grade level. The four stages of enrichment activities included in the model were (1) exploratory activities beyond the regular curriculum, (2) activities to develop critical reading and thinking skills, (3) activities for improvement of information-gathering skills, and (4) a mentorship phase.

The need for developing strategies for teaching in the content areas was examined and, as a result, a study guide was developed to aid students in understanding the content of the psychology textbook. Lessons were developed for each of four different chapters to serve as instructional tools for teaching the content of a specific psychology textbook. The study guide contains twenty-four lessons and answer keys.

The purpose of this paper is to research students who have continuous academic problems in school. Data is collected to identify the needs and problems of these children. Solutions are presented to meet identified needs. Behavior testing and an adult training program, which involves the services and funds of various existing social services agencies, are introduced as methods for meeting the student problems.

It is not uncommon among progressive-minded zoo professionals these days to hear disdain for the function of zoos as recreational. This attitude is understandable in that traditionally, zoos have done little but offer amusement along with parklands or picnic facilities. The progressive zoo person sets his or her goals above the old-fashioned recipe of crowding as many exotic animals as possible into an amusement-oriented menagerie to an authentic theme for exhibition intended to educate the public, offer research possibilities, and preserve and propagate species. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the stress management training based on Meichenbaum's stress inoculation approach in reducing anxiety among student teachers. Method. An experimental study spanning two semesters was conducted during the Fall and Spring of the 1979-80 school year. The subjects were 38 volunteer students enrolled in a teacher preparation program at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. The three treatment conditions were: Stress-management training (SMT), Group Management training (GMT), and No-Treatment (NT). This study investigated the relationship between various forms of intervention and gender on the moral development of junior high school students. The three types of intervention identified and studied were: (a) a classroom values education program, (b) crisis counseling, and (c) a combination classroom-counseling intervention. The cognitive-developmental approach of Lawrence Kohlberg served as the theoretical base for this study. In order to determine the effects of the two variables on the moral reasoning of children, 195 junior high school students were divided into three treatment groups and one control group. The proposed study would be conducted with fifty to sixty rural, male and female students enrolled in ninth grade language arts classes to determine whether the use of games bas a greater effect on achievement and motivation, than the use of the traditional techniques of lecture and discussion. A modification of the nonequivalent control group design is intended for use which two intact classrooms to test the two hypotheses. The primary intent of this study was to ascertain the effectiveness of parents in the role of teaching nutrition to their children. This research endeavor was an extension of refinement of a three-year program in nutrition education in the Department of Family and Human Development at Utah State University. Fifty-seven children enrolled in the Child Development Laboratory at Utah State, and their parents were involved in the study. Eighteen children were taught nutrition by their mothers. Twenty-one children were taught nutrition by their mothers and fathers, and 18 children served as the control group and received no nutrition using an …

The greatest benefit of this Plant-A-Tree project is being close to a living plant. This project will: introduce five tree planters - one from each area of Nebraska, discuss the parts of tree seeds, give examples of how tree seeds travel, discuss preparation of soil, demonstrate how to grow a seedling tree from seed, demonstrate how to transplant a tree, and offer suggestions for activities and exhibits.

Ethical and pedagogical arguments are presented against the use of animals by high school students in experiments causing pain/suffering/death of the animal. No justification is seen for such experimentation when perfectly valid alternatives, using noninvasive techniques, exist or could be developed. An important concern is the emotional and psychological growth of young people. An overall objective of high school biology curricula must be to assist students in making viable connections with living biological processes and the natural world.

Well-managed, healthy animals can be useful and beneficial aids to the emotional and intellectual development of young people at the primary and secondary levels of education. In Britain, vertebrate animals are not used in schools for experiments which might cause pain, distress or disease. The laws protecting animals are comprehensive but at present it is the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) which is having the most impact on the keeping of animals in British schools. Outlined are the efforts of the Animal Welfare Institute (AWl) for the last twenty-five years to end abuses to animals in high school biology programs. After concluding that the AWl's two brief rules prohibiting painful experimentation were not well understood by students even after years of effort, the AWl adopted the rules of the Canadian science fairs, which are similar to the Westinghouse Talent Search in that they simply prohibit experimentation on vertebrate animals.
