Animals can serve as valuable educational tools for elementary and high school students. By teaching young people reverence for all forms of life at an early age, it is possible to instill in them a proper perspective concerning the welfare and humane stewardship of animals. Exemplary subjects include the various aspects of evolutionary and embryological development; normal physiological processes, the mechanisms and pathology of naturally occurring infectious, metabolic, genetic and neoplastic diseases and aging; and an appreciation of the inevitability of death. Such studies can serve as learning models for students because these processes parallel or closely resemble those of …

Adolescents exhibit affection for numerous vertebrates and appear to sympathize and to identify with traumas these animals experience. Therapeutic benefits students attach to nurturing and breeding certain vertebrates are evident; destruction of these same creatures produces clearly negative attitudes by students toward the science course and the instructor. "Case histories" documented while teaching high school students working with vertebrates are reviewed and are related to specific techniques (e.g., pithing) utilized by numerous instructors. A curriculum plan in environmental education for Louisiana was developed, based on needs established by analyzing the results of testing 1,412 tenth grade students from 53 public secondary schools in Louisiana for their knowledge and opinions about the environment. The instrument used in the survey consisted of 43 cognitive and 20 affective questions. The instrument was developed from objectives selected from other state plans by a panel of 35 scientists and educators from 12 departments at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Fifty-four public secondary schools were randomly selected. Fifty-three schools, 98 percent of the sample, returned the answer forms. …

This study was an investigation to determine if a relationship existed between the twenty-three day physical, twenty-eight day emotional and the thirty-three day intellectual biorhythm cycles and academic achievement in reading. This study was designed to evaluate reading achievement in terms of treatment, (direct concept teaching) and non-treatment, controlling for socioeconomic group, preschool attendance and the level of maternal education. The study population was composed of 117 children in six kindergarten classes in six schools in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. Two schools were chosen at each socioeconomic level to allow for a treatment school and a control school. One class was used at each school. The Problem. The present study is an historical study of the educational impact of American church missionaries in the 19th and 20th centuries on the educational programs of Iran. Western church missionaries, particularly Americans, were among the earliest foreign influence to affect the Iranian educational programs. Traditionally, education has been important in Iran's recorded history of 3,000 years. In old and medieval Iran, customs and religious laws were the prevailing systems that influenced individual and group behavior. They also dictated educational policy. The purpose of this study was to obtain information on program provisions for gifted students in Virginia. Characteristics of an adequate program for the gifted were ascertained through use of a gifted program evaluation model developed by Joseph S. Renzulli and Virgil S. Ward entitled Diagnostic and Evaluative Scales For Differential Education For The Gifted, "DESDEG". The review of literature indicated that DESDEG provided a structural framework in the analysis of programs for gifted students. The purpose of this study was to test the relevance of parent education for high school students in terms of interest, concerns, expectations and experiences of the adolescents regarding children. The ability to delay gratification and gender served as independent variables. Weaver's (1977) "Adolescent Interest Survey" was administered to 179 high school students enrolled in three different programs in semi-rural northern Utah. These programs were objectively classified to represent two levels of ability to defer gratification. The primary purpose of the study was to determine significant differences and likenesses in personality characteristics of dramatics majors. A secondary purpose was to ascertain whether personality studies of this type might be effectively used by supervisors, departmental heads, and/or instructors in guiding students interested in dramatics in their choices of majors, colleges, and ultimately careers. Eighty-seven female dramatics majors and seventy-two male dramatics majors enrolled in nine colleges and universities in Tennessee volunteered to participate by taking the Omnibus Personality Inventory, the measuring instrument used for data gathering. This survey of graduates with the Diploma of Teaching (Science) was conducted with the intention of providing Science Department Staff of the N.C.A.E. with information which would allow changes to be made that would more accurately meet the needs of their students.

This thesis research provided background for the Iowa Association of Elementary Principals on the current status of early childhood education in the fifty states. It also determined the support for mandatory kindergarten and optional pre-kindergarten programs among elementary principals and kindergarten teachers in Iowa. This data was sought to provide information for the Iowa Association of Elementary School Principals for possible legislation requiring mandatory kindergarten and optional prekindergarten programs in Iowa.
