The purpose of this ethnographic study is to explore the stories told by four adolescent females about how they construct a gendered identity amidst the conflicting and contradictory expectations of them as adolescents and as females. After situating the study within a feminist poststructuralist framework, the dominant cultural scripts that have dictated what constitutes normative adolescent and feminine behavior are examined. Of particular importance to this study is the way in which these dominant discourses of femininity and adolescence are manifested in the middle school that the participants attend, especially in the school's attempt to mold its female students into …

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 6th (1993)

A variety of factors including increased urbanization decreased funding for governmental animal damage programs, and increases in some urban wildlife populations have resulted in a greater demand for urban nuisance wildlife control. Historically, this demand was met by Cooperative Extension Service (San Julian 1987), state fish and wildlife agency, or federal wildlife damage control employees (Bollengier 1981) These agencies provided educational materials, consultations, an-or physically removed animals. Recently, there is an increased demand for physical animal removal evidenced by increasing numbers of private Pest control operators (PCO), companies that do general pest or insect control work, specializing in the removal …

Hsp 72 In Rat Skeletal Muscle: Fibre Type Differences And Effect Of Exercise, Marius Locke

Western blot analyses of SDS-PAGE separated proteins from various hindlimb muscles from non-exercised control animals probed with an HSP 72 monoclonal antibody, demonstrated the constitutive expression of HSP 72 in rat muscles comprised primarily of Type I muscle fibres (soleus), but not in muscles comprised primarily of Type IIB/X fibres (white gastrocnemius-WG). In muscles of mixed fibre type, (plantaris and red gastrocnemius-RG) HSP 72 content was proportional to the percentage of Type I fibres.;Immunolocalization of HSP 72 in cross-sections from the soleus muscle demonstrated that both Type I and Type IIA fibres expressed HSP 72, but Type I fibres expressed …

This study concerns the multidimensional factors influencing preschoolers' prosocial behavior. Comprehension of this complex phenomenon requires a synthesized, theoretical conceptualization. This study develops the concept of prosocial orientation to meet this need. Prosocial orientation is posited as minimally composed of four core variables: perspective-taking, empathy, moral reasoning, and others-concept. The position is taken in this study that higher levels of some or all of these four variables may cluster statistically among some preschoolers. The second issue proposes that preschoolers with a relatively better developed prosocial orientation (i.e., higher levels of some or all of the four variables) would also likely …

Self-regulation of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disordered (ADHD) boys was assessed by examining differences in task-directive verbalizations between boys with ADHD and their peers using Meichenbaum et al.'s (1992) coding system. Eleven dyads of ADHD/normal boys and eleven dyads of normal/normal boys were asked to work on a Lego block task. All of the boys were between the ages of 7 and 10 years and were rated to be average or above in intelligence. Videotapes of the interactions were transcribed and coded for task functions, dialogue features, affect, attribution, and behavioral ratings. The purpose of this study was to identify the methodological content and teaching delivery used by vocational teacher education faculty in University Council for Vocational Education (UCVE) institutions and other selected higher education institutions (NON-UCVE). The population for this study was defined as: full-time vocational teacher education faculty in programs at Research I, Research II, and Doctorate Granting Colleges and Universities I where comprehensive vocational education programs were offered. Administrative leaders for each institution identified the vocational teacher education faculty which established the frame for the study. The Barnes Hospital School of Cytotechnology closed in 1977 as have many other programs tor the education of cytotechnologists. These programs were victims of hospital budgetary concerns, as well as a job market that had no demand tor new cytotechnologists.

Unfortunately with fewer and fewer graduates from accredited programs in the last 15-16 years there is, currently a shortage of these skilled laboratory professionals.

Faced with unfilled vacancies in the cytology laboratory many hospitals are considering re-evaluating the possibilities of sponsoring programs for the education of cytotechnologists.

This study investigated the differential effectiveness of a computer-assisted assertiveness training program and a traditional assertiveness training group on the self-esteem of pregnant teenagers and adolescent mothers. Self-esteem was defined as a multidimensional construct consisting of the following elements: global self-esteem, performance or agentic self-esteem, behavioral self-esteem, assertiveness, and aggressiveness. A total of 37 subjects participated in the study and produced valid scores on the posttreatment measures--16 in the computer-assisted group (7 pregnant, 9 parenting) and 21 in the traditional group (8 pregnant, 13 parenting). Treatment for the computer-assisted group extended for eight weeks and consisted of a weekly, 30-45 …

This exploratory study investigated 11th grade high school chemistry students' understandings of the science concepts of chemical symbol, formula, equation, reaction, reactant, and product. It also investigated students' ideas about the meaning of plus sign, reaction sign, subscript, and coefficient. In addition, it attempted to assess the impact of students' prior mathematical knowledge on their understanding of these fundamental concepts. A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods were employed in a two-stage approach involving a preliminary study and a main study over one academic school year (1990-1991). This dissertation describes extensions of post-structuralism in contemporary curriculum discourses. Post-structuralist thought is mainly associated with the seminal work of Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, Jean-Francois Lyotard, and Michel Serres. Post-structural criticism and analysis challenge prevailing structuralist approaches and question the fundamental assumptions upon which these approaches rest. A key assumption of structural approaches is that all phenomena are constituted by an underlying structure. In curriculum, these structural assumptions (often scientific) remain unacknowledged and thus are immunized against criticism; rather, they are incorporated into the preferred structural analyses, interpretations, and organizations promoted by the promise of order and rationality. …

The study focused on six at-risk students enrolled in the sixth grade at a large urban Southern middle school. These students, along with their classroom teacher, participated in two interactive reading events using illustrated trade books. The purpose of the study was to examine how these students used the pictures and text to create meaning for the stories. The two illustrated selections differed in story complexity, amount of world knowledge required for interpretation, and relationship of pictures to text (i.e., a close relationship indicated both picture and text communicated similar information, while a distanced relationship indicated one source provided story …

Insect metamorphosis is relatively easy to explain at a superficial level, but a deep understanding of the concept reveals a complex array of interrelationships, most importantly those that address evolution. This is significant because, in biology, evolution is considered to be a central theme. Participants for this study were selected from grades 5, 7, 9, and 11 according to low, middle, or high achievement levels in their science classes, and to scores on a national achievement test. The stories of three retired women who have shown a lifelong and continuing commitment to learning and literacy were addressed through life history methodology. Three literacy life histories were produced which were then analyzed in light of current research in the field of reading and literacy. All life phases were addressed, but emphasis was placed on the retirement years. Results confirmed prior research in the field of reading across four lifespan phases--preformal schooling, formal schooling, homemaker/workplace, and retirement--and suggested that reading and writing grew in importance during the retirement years and led to an extension or increase in mental awareness. …

The purpose of this study was to explore the use of concept circle diagrams, a newly developed metacognitive strategy (Wandersee, 1987), for meaningful science learning. Two research questions were: (a) Do concept circle diagrams enhance the identification and learning of science concepts more than traditional learning methods? and (b) Do concept circle diagrams evolve in quality within and across three sequences of direct explanation, guided practice, and independent practice?
