Dissertations and Theses

Our institutional approaches to problems in the changing global landscape of internationalized higher education are being challenged, and many scholars call for new approaches for understanding and addressing the complex problems we face (e.g., la paperson). The COVID-19 pandemic has sped up the need to make changes in how we approach our evolving problems and possibilities for human-centric transformation. This multi-paper dissertation is a call to action and proposes the use of new approaches to research and educational practice--specifically, critical futures studies and arts-based research. Design justice principles and participatory action approaches frame and motivate these possibilities. First, "A Public …

Journal of Global Awareness

Short-term faculty-led study abroad programs are high-impact pedagogical practices designed to enhance students' global competency. However, there is a gap in our understanding regarding the specific educational components of short-term faculty-led study abroad programs that promote global competency. This systematic review examined nearly two decades of research on such programs (n=86) to assess the educational components associated with increases in students' global competencies using Steinberg's (2017) educational components as a framework. Results indicated that the educational components included in global competency-building education abroad courses varied substantially across programs and global regions. The components most strongly supporting enhanced global competency were …

Lgbtqia+ Training, Jazmin Reckmo

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

There is a lack of representation for the LGBTQIA+ community in our education system. The youths who belong to this community feel underrepresented, isolated, and unsupported. The consequences of not having enough support and struggling in the school system are detrimental. LGBTQIA+ youths have higher rates of mental health issues, homelessness, and suicide (Rusow et al., 2018). Support systems are crucial for kids to have. Support systems can come from family, school, and peer supports. Familial and school support are the most focused on when it comes to youths’ concerns. Many people in the education system and at home can …

Addressing Systemic Inequities: A Psychoeducational Group For Advocating For African Americans, Jaree' Barnwell

Educational Specialist, 2020-current

This paper will discuss and describe the development of an open psychoeducational group that will empower people of the community through education to advocate for African American/Black people within institutions that may perpetuate barriers. Acknowledging that one in four people struggle with mental health issues, it is imperative to consider an appropriate treatment modality that destigmatizes mental health and equips participants with information. This group is especially relevant as one in three African Americans, who struggle with mental health concerns, will never receive the appropriate care comparatively afforded to white populations. This thesis will concisely discuss the education system, the …

Developing Invisible Disability Education For Elementary School Children, Kayla Dizon May 2022

Developing Invisible Disability Education For Elementary School Children, Kayla Dizon

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Education around invisible disabilities is not typically included in elementary school curriculum. An invisible disability may be defined as “an umbrella term that captures a whole spectrum of hidden disabilities or challenges that are primarily neurological in nature” (Disable World 2022). When you have a curriculum talking about invisible disabilities, it addresses these issues and educates the children more about invisible disabilities. When elementary school children don’t learn about invisible disabilities, they will form biases on their peers who have an invisible disability and be misinformed on what some of these disabilities actually are. I created a three-day lesson for …

Integrating Neuroscience Research Into Social Work, Esteban Solis May 2022

Integrating Neuroscience Research Into Social Work, Esteban Solis

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Historically, the field of social work has implemented a bio-psycho-social perspective to conceptualize mental illness, and to further investigate how biological, psychological and social factors contribute to client circumstances. Although, the biopsychosocial model aims to emphasize all three areas, in social work, psycho-social realms receive more attention while biological factors—particularly neurological ones receive less. Research and recent findings from neuroscience can enhance social work’s understanding of mental health and improve education, training and practice. However, very limited literature of cross-disciplinary collaborations between social work and neuroscience exists and the rationale for that is unclear. This study seeks to fill this …

A Quality Improvement Project To Examine The Impact Of The Use Of Structured Diabetes Educational Materials For Medical Personnel, Alina Jaffer

DNP Projects

With the immigrant population increasing in the United States, the demand for healthcare providers who can provide culturally appropriate care and intracultural communication has increased. Compared to individuals born in the United States, immigrants with diabetes are less likely to meet the standardized targets for diabetes management, resulting in disparities in diabetes-related complications. The problem is the lack of evidence-based patient education for all people, including immigrants who do not speak English as a first language. The purpose of this project was to assess whether or not language-specific structured diabetes educational material for healthcare personnel use would increase the efficacy …

I chose to solve a training and continuing education problem in my workplace, by creating a manual on burn surgery. This manual will later be turned into a computer education module, but will always be available in a hard copy as a reference material. I had to find an approach that reflected how my peers wanted to be educated and on what education points they felt were the most important to their success in surgery.

Family Factors In Career Decisions To Enter Education Amongst Black Urban Millennials, Christian Jacobs

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThe interactions a student has with a teacher help form their relationship with the educational experience. Importantly, a lack of representation can greatly impact the future impression of oneself and the world. For students of color, the balance of teachers who represent their ethnic and cultural diversity in the education field is greatly skewed toward White educators. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study, which was rooted in the self-determination theory, was to examine if and to what extent various factors, including parental, household, environmental, gender, and ethnicity impact Black millennials’ decision to go into the educational field. Participant criteria …

Status Anxiety And Overall Life Satisfaction Of Young Adults In The Bay Area, Samuel Casco

Global Public Health | Senior Theses

The published literature suggests social comparisons have significant negative effects on an individual’s psychological well-being. However, there is little to no research to suggest that an individual’s attainment of societal success has a relationship with one’s perceived life satisfaction.

A mixed-methods study involved young adults ages 18-29 in the Bay Area and were selected via a student researcher in the Global Public Health department of Dominican University of California. 115 participants completed surveys regarding self-perceived life satisfaction and status anxiety through the Qualtrics Survey Collection Tool. A Pearson’s Chi-Squared Test was conducted to find an association between life satisfaction and …
