The Role Of Schooling In Constructing Gendered Identities, Bernadette L. Dean, Rahat Joldoshalieva, Abid Hussainy
The Role Of Schooling In Constructing Gendered Identities, Bernadette L. Dean, Rahat Joldoshalieva, Abid Hussainy
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
Many research studies show that schools play an important role in constructing gendered identities of girls and boys in western contexts. In Pakistan, there are research studies on the construction of gender in textbooks but studies on the role of schools are either unreported or unavailable. To address this gap in the literature, an exploratory study was carried out in public sector schools in the urban and semi-urban areas of Karachi. The findings indicate that the inter-relationship of the structure of schools, the official curriculum, teaching and learning practices and teacher beliefs result in a gendered division of labor, gendered …
Missional Experiential Education For Developing Christian Global Citizens, David E. Fenrick
Missional Experiential Education For Developing Christian Global Citizens, David E. Fenrick
ATS Dissertations
At the start of the 21st century, Christian educators are faced with the challenge of equipping Christian disciples for participation in God's present mission in the world, a worldthatisinthemidstofradicalchangeduetotheforcesofglobalization. Christians around the world, most of whom will never have the opportunity to participate in formal ministerial education, are being called upon to demonstrate a missional multicultural witnessandgloballevelofcitizenshipinthecommunitieswheretheylive. Giventhis reality, Christian education at every level needs to discover a pedagogical process for preparing all Christians for missionary vocations that address the emerging missiological realities ofthe 21st century.
This research was undertaken in order to investigate the degree to which the principles …

The Fourth R: How Indiana Public School Superintendents Make Decisions About Religious Issues, Esselona Jane Larson
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand how Indiana public school superintendents make decisions about religious issues. Although laws are written specifically to address religion and its relationship in public schools, the interpretation of these laws is affected by different factors in the public school arena. The participants in this study were nine Indiana public school superintendents, male and female from all regions of the state, representing different locale, gender, ethnicity, age and years of experience. During the literature review, six categories emerged: religion and curriculum, equal access to school facilities, prayer in schools, religious accommodations, free speech …
Indoctrination, Diversity, And Teaching About Spirituality And Religion In The Workplace, Donald W. Mccormmick
Indoctrination, Diversity, And Teaching About Spirituality And Religion In The Workplace, Donald W. Mccormmick
Organization Management Journal
The author reflects on his experience and discusses problems in teaching a course about spirituality and religion in the workplace. Sometimes indoctrination happens when professors treat their own spiritual ideology as the truth, or they require students to engage in religious practices in class. Indoctrination is teaching people “to accept a system of thought uncritically.” The management education literature has little to say about indoctrination. Indoctrination can be avoided by (1) ensuring informed consent, (2) designing learning activities for students from all spiritual perspectives, (3) teaching about the topic (instead of taking the “how to” approach), (4) presenting diverse spiritual …

Translating Vincent De Paul For The 21st Century: A Case Study Of Vincentian Mission Effectiveness Efforts At Depaul University, Edward R. Udovic C.M., Ph.D.
Translating Vincent De Paul For The 21st Century: A Case Study Of Vincentian Mission Effectiveness Efforts At Depaul University, Edward R. Udovic C.M., Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
Edward Udovic believes that the success that DePaul University enjoys today depends on its translation of the Vincentian mission and values into modern terms to meet modern needs. Like Vincent de Paul himself, the university is “values-driven, connected to the community, supportive of diversity . . . risk-tak[ing], innovative, and pragmatic.” The state of the Congregation is such that its members may lack a “physical presence, canonical sponsorship role, or governance role” at DePaul by 2023. However, it is already passing on its values to the lay members of the university, ensuring that its Vincentian character will continue even without …

Religious Schools: For Spirit, (F)Or Nation, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In this paper I draw attention to the study of 'unofficially sacred' sites in geographies of religion, which provide significant insights into the construction of religious identity and community, and the intersections of sacred and secular. I show that such sites deserve as much attention as places of worship (the more conventional focus in the geographical study of religion) in our understanding of the place of religion in contemporary urban society. In particular, using the case of Islamic religious schools in Singapore, I examine how Muslim identities and community are negotiated within multicultural and multireligious contexts, and particularly within one …

Lay Leaders In Catholic Higher Education: An Emerging Paradigm For The Twenty-First Century, Anthony J. Cernera, Ed.
Sacred Heart University Press Books
Since the Second Vatican Council, lay women and men are assuming greater responsibility for guiding the mission of the Catholic Church in the modern world. This is particularly the case in institutions of Catholic higher education in the United States. The eighteen essays in this volume, based on presentations at a conference sponsored by Sacred Heart University and the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, examine the many challenges facing lay leaders of Catholic institutions of higher learning. The volume begins with a report on a detailed study of the background of lay leaders; the essays that follow address such …

Learning To Persevere: The Popular Teachings Of Tendai Ascetics, Stephen G. Covell
Comparative Religion Publications
This paper introduces the teachings of three contemporary practitioners of Tendai Buddhism. I argue that the study of Japanese Buddhism has focused on doctrine and the past to the detriment of our understanding of contemporary teaching. Through an examination of the teachings of contemporary practitioners of austerities, I show that practice is drawn on as a source more than classical doctrine, that conservative values are prized, and that the teachings show strong similarities to the teachings of the new religions, suggesting a broad-based shared worldview.

Ancient Way In A New Land: Benedictine Education In The Great Plains, Marielle Frigge O.S.B.
Ancient Way In A New Land: Benedictine Education In The Great Plains, Marielle Frigge O.S.B.
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In the first half of the sixth century, an Italian monk, Benedict of Nursia, provided a framework for Christian monastic life. In the last half of the nineteenth century, his descendants arrived in the Great Plains, part of the westward movement of Christian missionaries in North America. What could this ancient way of life offer to a new land of Native tribes and immigrant farmers, traders, and soldiers? And what might this new land contribute to the shaping of a uniquely American form of monastic life?
These Benedictine men and women brought with them centuries of experience as learners and …

Relational Learning For A Sustainable Future: An Eco -Spiritual Model, Mary Elizabeth Westfall
Doctoral Dissertations
We are facing unprecedented environmental challenges as we enter the new millennium as human choices and practices have repeatedly led to environmental degradation. Increasingly there are individuals and groups seeking to address this environmental crisis and move toward more sustainable patterns of living. But in order to make alternative choices it will be essential to draw upon the wealth and variety of human capabilities.
For nearly 350 years Western culture has looked to reason and rationality to provide truth and direction. The affective side of being human, feelings, intuition, love, care, wonder, mystery and hope have largely been devalued. In …

On the front page of this edition of the Wooster Voice, there is an article discussing the vandalism of Kauke Arch. In typical Wooster tradition, students attempted to fill the arch with snow in the hopes of having classes cancelled for their efforts. However, some students took it too far and caused $12,000 worth of damage. In the heat of the moment, a group of students decided to leave some "surprises" for the plows, which included ripped up benches from around campus. In the pages that follow, there is an article about the Bissman Wrestling Federation's making it's debut in …

In the days that followed, the committee cleared SGA from all allegations of charter violations and unconstitutionality.
