Relationship Of Emotional/Behavioral, Intellectual, Life Stress, And Parenting Stress Variables To Language Delay In Preschool-Age Children, Jane Lynn Rasico-Hoffman Jan 1996

Relationship Of Emotional/Behavioral, Intellectual, Life Stress, And Parenting Stress Variables To Language Delay In Preschool-Age Children, Jane Lynn Rasico-Hoffman

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The transactional model (Sameroff & Chandler, 1975) proposes that a child's development is a product of the interaction of child, parent, and environmental factors over time. Based on this model, this study investigated whether the variables of nonverbal intelligence, emotional/behavioral functioning, parenting stress, and life stress discriminated among preschool-age children with mild to moderate delays in language and those with normal language. Sixty preschool children with a mean age of 4 years, 6 months and their parents participated in this study. There were 28 children in the normal language group (N = 28) and 32 children in the mild to …

Clinical Utility Of The Smell Identification Test In Differentiating Persons With Dementia Of The Alzheimer's Type From Depressed Elderly And Elderly Controls, Theodore Lynn Moretz

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Accurate differential diagnosis between Dementia of the Alzheimer's Type (DAT) and depression is important in providing appropriate treatment to persons suffering from each of these disorders; however, accurately differentiating between these disorders is often problematic. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the Smell Identification Test (SIT) could accurately distinguish between persons with DAT; depressed, non-demented elderly; and elderly controls. The sample consisted of three groups of 30 white subjects matched for age, gender, and smoking behavior. Group I consisted of persons with early DAT. Group II consisted of persons diagnosed as suffering from depression and Group III …

Predictive Discriminant Analysis Versus Logistic Regression For Two-Group Classification Problems In Educational Settings, Alice. Meshbane Jan 1996

Predictive Discriminant Analysis Versus Logistic Regression For Two-Group Classification Problems In Educational Settings, Alice. Meshbane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The cross-validated classification accuracy of predictive discriminant analysis (PDA) and logistic regression (LR) models was compared for the two-group classification problem. Thirty-four real data sets varying in number of cases, number of predictor variables, degree of group separation, relative group size, and equality of group covariance matrices were employed for the comparison. PDA models were built based on assumptions of multivariate normality and equal covariance matrices, and cases were classified using Tatsuoka's (1988, p. 351) minimum chi square rule. LR models were built using the International Mathematical and Statistical Library (IMSL) subroutine Categorical Generalized Linear Model (CTGLM), available with the …

Data for the study were gathered through the use of two questionnaires. The first was based on a part of the American Society for Training and Development's (ASTD) 1987-1989 Competency and Standards Study. Additionally, a demographic questionnaire dealing with biographical, educational, and professional characteristics was self-developed. Both were mailed to training directors in all Fortune 500 companies. Major findings include: (1) …

Chaos Theory In Educational Systems: Principals' Perceptions Of Sensitive Dependence On Initial Conditions, Suzan B. Baker Dec 1995

Chaos Theory In Educational Systems: Principals' Perceptions Of Sensitive Dependence On Initial Conditions, Suzan B. Baker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the characteristic of chaos theory called sensitive dependence on initial conditions or butterfly effect in schools and school systems. The purpose of the study was to develop insight into school systems by determining if categories or factors of behaviors or decisions have been observed in school systems which are sensitive to initial conditions and are therefore likely to produce exponential effects. A modified critical incident technique was used to collect data from experienced principals in three moderate sized regions in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia. Participants reported incidents that were sensitive to initial conditions during interviews. The …

Remark: Brown V. Board: Revisited, Michael A. Middleton Oct 1995

Remark: Brown V. Board: Revisited, Michael A. Middleton

Faculty Publications

[T]he Negro needs neither segregated schools nor mixed schools. What he needs is Education. What he must remember is that there is no magic, either in mixed schools or in segregated schools. A mixed school with poor and unsympathetic teachers, with hostile public opinion, and no teaching of truth concerning black folk, is bad. A segregated school with ignorant placeholders, inadequate equipment, poor salaries, and wretched housing, is equally bad. Other things being equal, the mixed school is the broader, more natural basis for the education of all youth. It gives wider contacts; it inspires greater self-confidence; and suppresses the …

The Core Values Of Vincentian Education, Louise Sullivan D.C. Oct 1995

The Core Values Of Vincentian Education, Louise Sullivan D.C.

Vincentian Studies

The educational endeavors of Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac, often overshadowed by their other works, were an integral part of their service to the poor. Vincent de Paul is sometimes seen as an anti-intellectual, but he made sure he received the best theological education possible. He was also a successful teacher. He taught school during his student days at Toulouse and while he was pastor of Clichy, and he was primarily engaged with the Gondi family as a tutor for the eldest son. He knew that the religious neglect of the poor and the clergy’s ignorance were inextricably …

The Relationship Between Elementary Teacher Personality Types And Their Attitudes Toward Elementary Age Students With Learning Disabilities, Mary Beth Thompson

Theses & Honors Papers

The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between regular elementary teacher personality types and their attitudes toward elementary age students with learning disabilities. Subjects (n= 50) were regular elementary teachers grades two through six from five randomly sampled elementary schools in Virginia. 62% (n= 31) of the questionnaires were returned. The attitudes of the selected elementary teachers were determined by self-developed survey questionnaire using a Likert Scale. Personality types were determined by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). A Pearson r was used to analyze the data obtained from the Likert Scale and the MBTI at …
