Charter Schools And Equal Access: Implications For Magnet And Other Choice Schools, Carrie Ausbrooks

Essays in Education

American public schools have been entrusted with the responsibility of inculcating citizens with democratic values. However, schools have come under attack for a variety of reasons. School choice provides parents with opportunities to select from options, both within and outside the public system of schooling, which will provide their children with the type of education they desire. Among these school choice options are charter and magnet schools. This article begins with a discussion of the basic similarities between magnet and charter schools, followed by a discussion of a legal research study which examined the extent to which U.S. charter school …

Technological advances are paving the way for improvements in many sectors of society. The US education system needs to undergo a transformation of existing pedagogical methods to maximize utilization of new technologies. "Like Visions In My Head: Understanding The Formulation Of Student Perceptions Of The Value Of The Liberal Arts Experience, And The Impact Of This Process On College Choice, Margaret L. Drugovich

Student Scholarship

Tuition-dependent, private postsecondary institutions need a continuous and predictable stream of students to assure their fiscal viability. Liberal arts colleges, like all postsecondary education institutions, are vying for student s in an increasingly competitive marketplace. As premium price leaders, many liberal arts institutions have been forced to make deep cuts to their 'sticker price' in the form of tuition discounts in order to compete with one another as well as with state institutions that increasingly espouse their ability to simulate the small college experience. However, discounting, though perhaps popular and even necessary, cannot be a long-term solution. According to Lovett, …

It’S Time To Upgrade: Tests And Administration Procedures For The New Millennium, Michael Russell Apr 2002

It’S Time To Upgrade: Tests And Administration Procedures For The New Millennium, Michael Russell

Essays in Education

Increasing use of computers in schools has led to a mis-alignment between the way some students develop skill and knowledge and how they are tested. This paper reviews past research that demonstrates that paper-based tests that require students to produce written responses underestimate the achievement of students who are accustomed to writing on computer. The paper then explores how learning that occurs through other instructional uses of computers is not adequately captured by current testing practices. The paper argues that new approaches should be explored to better measure student learning.

School District Performance Under The Mcas, Jie Chen, Thomas Ferguson Mar 2002

School District Performance Under The Mcas, Jie Chen, Thomas Ferguson

New England Journal of Public Policy

Education reform has spawned efforts to test learning across the nation. This paper analyzes the determinants of Massachusetts’ school district test scores under the state’s high stakes testing program, MCAS. The study is the first to demonstrate direct links between improvements in MCAS scores and state aid to school districts. The authors estimate “value added” for each school district in the state. The list of schools with high value added produces real surprises — while some affluent districts do well, others rank at the very bottom. Additionally, the study analyzes how teacher maximum salaries, district superintendent salaries, per capita income, …

Pharmaceutical Employers' Perceptions Of Employees Or Applicants With E -Degrees Or Online Coursework, Elizabeth Griffin Chaney

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interest in the use and development of web-based instruction in higherEducation has seen an explosion of activity in the last decade. With this rapid growth, the majority of research has been focused on student and faculty perceptions of distance learning. Although online learning may appear to be quite advantageous to students and universities, employers are not always willing to hire applicants with online degrees after graduation. Nevertheless, about 70% of the nation's two- and four-year colleges are now offering cyber-courses. This number should lead one to ask prior to enrolling in an e-degree program what an employer's perceptions of that …
