Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Professionalism In Government Primary Schools In Karachi, Pakistan, Meher Rizvi, Bob Elliot

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

This paper examines teachers’ perceptions of their professionalism under conditions of educational reforms in government primary schools in Karachi, Pakistan. Conceiving teacher professionalism in terms of four dimensions (teacher efficacy, teacher practice, teacher leadership and teacher collaboration) it reports a quantitative survey research study of teachers in these schools, where educational reforms have been initiated. One conclusion from the study is that such teachers do perceive themselves as professionals—a finding that is counter to the often-held beliefs about these teachers. The paper argues that it is important to regard teachers as professionals, capable of further enhancing their own professionalism, for …

20th Century Black Women's Struggle For Empowerment In A White Supremacist Educational System: Tribute To Early Women Educators, Safoura Boukari

Women's and Gender Studies Program: Information and Materials

The goal in this work is to provide a brief overview of the development of Black women‟s education throughout American history and based on some pertinent literatures that highlight not only the tradition of struggle pervasive in people of African Descent lives. In the framework of the historical background, three examples will be used to illustrate women's creative enterprise and contributions to the education of African American children, and overall racial uplift. In doing so, I will refer to how those women struggled to set up schools in a totally hostile society where, race, patriarchy, class and gender, interlocking issues …

The Children Left Behind: Roma Access To Education In Contemporary Romania, Aram A. Schvey, Martin S. Flaherty, Tracy E. Higgins

Crowley Mission Reports

In Romania, Roma children are nearly always educated in more poorly resourced schools than non-Roma children; they are nearly always educated by less-qualified teachers; and they are often treated differently—and worse—than non-Roma children by their principals, teachers, and classmates. While non-Roma children move ahead through Romania’s education system, Roma children are too often left behind. This Report begins with a synopsis of the problem. It then examines the roots of the plight of the Roma in general and of Roma children in particular. The Report then outlines the particular findings of the Mission and sets forth the relevant domestic, international, …

Special Education Students' Placement Preferences As Shown In Special Education Journals, Maurice Miller Ph.D., Pamela Garriott Ph.D., Deanna Mershon Ph.D.

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

The purpose of this review was to determine what has been found about placement perceptions and preferences of those who are most impacted by LRE placement decisions—the students themselves. Eleven studies were found in recent issues of most frequently-read special education journals. While a variety of preferences were found, the number who expressed strong preference for the general education classroom was noteworthy. Student preference is considered to be an influential variable in the performance of the students.

Cognitive And Non-Cognitive Predictors Of Academic Success For Conditionally Admitted Students At Indiana State University, Jeffrey Tincher

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This was a quantitative method research study that looked at conditionally-admitted students at Indiana State University, a mid-sized public institution. The study's purpose was to find factors that could be used to predict the success of conditionally-admitted students. Quantitative analyses tested the predictive capability of a combination of eight cognitive and non-cognitive variables, some that have traditionally been used to predict success in college (high school grade point average, high school class rank, standardized test scores) and some that have not (motivation, attitude, gender, ethnicity, and geographic region). The study's eight variables together accounted for 14% of the variance in …

School Demographic Characteristics That Predict No Child Left Behind Sanctions In Indiana Title I Schools, Ronnie Lee Hiller

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is causing fear, confusion, and havoc in some schools and school districts that have failed to achieve adequate yearly progress on state-sponsored standardized tests. Educators fear sanctions that label them as schools in need of improvement; give parents a choice of moving their children to high-performing schools; provide supplementalEducational services; replace the principal and staff; reopen their school as a charter school, and provide for a state takeover of schools and school districts. The purpose of this study was to discover if school demographic characteristics could predict No Child Left Behind sanctions …

Neuropsychological Impairment In Racial/Ethnic Minorities With Hiv Infection And Low Literacy Levels: Effects Of Education And Reading Level In Participant Characterization, Elizabeth L. Ryan, Reon Baird, Monica Rivera-Mindt, Desiree Byrd, Jennifer Monzones, Susan Morgello, The Manhattan Hiv Brain Bank

Psychology Faculty Publications

Educational attainment is an important factor in the interpretation of cognitive test scores but years of education are not necessarily synonymous with educational quality among racial/ethnic minority populations. This study investigated the comparability of educational attainment with reading level and examined whether discrepancies in education and reading level accounted for differences in neuropsychological test performance between HIV+ racial/ethnic minority and nonminority participants. Study participants (N = 200) were derived from the Manhattan HIV Brain Bank (MHBB) where 50% of the cohort had ≤8th grade reading level but only 5% had ≤8 years of education. Significantly lower reading ability and education …

Nurses' Confidence And Competence Levels, Ellen M. Wathen

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Frequently, nurses with lower levels of self-confidence do not perform at the level of competency they normally would in non-testing or clinical situations. This obstacle to the evaluative process causes an inaccurate assessment of nurses' competency levels. This study examined the effects of confidence-building techniques on nurses during specific competency assessments of an 8-day orientation course in a Midwestern healthcare institution. Data was collected using researcher-developed tests for both medication administration and blood administration, and theEducational Testing Service's factor-referenced temperament scale on self-confidence. Forty-six nurses received confidence building statements within their tests and other written materials, as well as verbally. …

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

The purpose of this article is to provide a review of the published literature on the efficacy and perception of inclusion for students with mild disabilities at the secondary level. In this review, ten studies were obtained, reviewed, and synthesized. The studies reviewed indicated mixed results have been found regarding the differential efficacy of an inclusive environment to a resource environment on a number of different dependent variables. Further concerns and challenges are raised regarding aspects of implementation of inclusive programs. Future research issues and implications for both teachers and students with mild disabilities at the secondary level are discussed.
