Towards Inclusive Standards, Michelle Pearce Jan 2008

Towards Inclusive Standards, Michelle Pearce

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The context of this study is the inclusion of students with dillabilities in secondary schools. The introduction of legislation in the United States and Australia has resulted in large numbers of students with disabilities being included in regular classes by subject teachers. Inclusion in secondary schools has proved especially challenging to teachers. Reviews and research highlight the need for teacher training. but do not specify the knowledge and skills that teachers need to become inclusive. It has been proposed that professional teaching standards have the potential to guide preservice and inservice training. Before standards could be assessed for their inclusivity, …

Integrating The Wasl Into The High School Algebra Curriculum, Kent Stafford Pearsons Nov 2007

Integrating The Wasl Into The High School Algebra Curriculum, Kent Stafford Pearsons

All Graduate Projects

Most Algebra courses in Washington are supplemented with Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) material. However, in the last two years, little more than half of Washington sophomores passed the math portion of the WASL; for about half of tenth graders the extra worksheets did little to no good. Students need relevant WASL material that correlates with the current math they are studying. In this manner, even though questions may be phrased differently, the material is familiar and so answering questions are more possible. Also, since new worksheets have multiple choice, teachers can discuss how most wisely to answer this …

The Effect Of Remittances On Child Labor And Child Education In Nepal, Michael Milligan, Alok Bohara Oct 2007

The Effect Of Remittances On Child Labor And Child Education In Nepal, Michael Milligan, Alok Bohara

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Remittances from international sources form an important part of the typical Nepalese households income. We analyze the effects of household international remittance and non-remittance income on educational achievement and the amount of child labor using Heckman's two-step analysis. For the analysis of educational achievement, the ratio of years of schooling to age is the independent regression variable, and a dummy variable representing whether or not the child has attended school at all is used as the select variable. For the analysis of child labor, the number off hours spent working in the labor force is the regression independent variable and …

Continuing Teacher Professional Development In Post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan, Rahat Joldoshalieva Sep 2007

Continuing Teacher Professional Development In Post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan, Rahat Joldoshalieva

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

After the collapse of the USSR, Kyrgyzstan became an independent Central Asian state in 1991. Since its independence, there have been enormous changes in the political, social and economic life of the young state, which strives to become a democratic and aspiring market-oriented economy. Its education system has also begun experiencing changes. However, most of the reforms brought in this area continue to be short-term and ever-changing. Economic hardship does not allow the continuation of the previously state-funded teacher retraining system, which further creates deteriorating quality education in the schools. On one hand, the country continues to follow the Soviet …

Interview protocols and a survey instrument will be probed, and data will be collected from New York City public school teachers and from their general education elementary school students. The results of the study can be used to customize motivational …
