Participation In Extra-Curricular Activities By Suburban High School Students With Emotional Behavior Disorders, Karin Dye

Theses and Graduate Projects

This study analyzes the current status of the involvement of suburban high school students with Emotional/Behavior Disorders (EBD) and their participation in extra curricular activities. Individuals who participate in extra-curricular activities are positively associated with a reduction in delinquent behaviors and show an increase in both academic and social performance. Results of studies with high school students across the United States have demonstrated that those students who become heavily involved in extra curricular activities tend to be model students and seldom get involved in delinquency and crime (Cassel, 2000). Students who are diagnosed with EBD, however, are more likely than …

Student Government: Developing A Student Government In An Urban Elementary School, Nicole Lenee Sykes Feb 2008

Student Government: Developing A Student Government In An Urban Elementary School, Nicole Lenee Sykes

All Graduate Projects

School community is critically important for healthy adolescent development. School connectedness has been found to be even more powerful than family connectedness in terms of protection against acting out behaviors in adolescence (Harrison & Narayan, 2003 ). Increasing student involvement in urban elementary settings through student government would unify students, communities, parents and staff. Establishing a student government in an urban school setting promotes student voice, student interest and helps tie community and staff together. The importance of belonging is essential in providing a safe and productive educational environment.

Legal Advocacy And Education Reform: Litigating School Exclusion, Dean Rivkin

Scholarly Works

School exclusion has existed as a dark side of public education since the creation of America's public schools. Several cases in the United States Supreme Court memorably invalidated State and school system efforts to deny equal educational opportunities to marginalized school children and youth. In these cases, the over-riding multiple values of education were poignantly articulated in the majority decisions.

School exclusion has stubbornly persisted. It takes many forms. This article surveys the most prominent pathways to school exclusion, highlighting what has been called the "School-To-Prison-Pipeline." Various legal challenges are also evaluated. The pros and cons of litigating school exclusion …

Cascading Infrastructure Failures: Avoidance And Response, George Baker, Cheryl Elliot Jan 2008

Cascading Infrastructure Failures: Avoidance And Response, George Baker, Cheryl Elliot

Selected Works

No critical infrastructure is self-sufficient. The complexity inherent in the interdependent nature of infrastructure systems complicates planning and preparedness for system failures. Recent wide-scale disruption of infrastructure on the Gulf Coast due to weather, and in the Northeast due to electric power network failures, dramatically illustrate the problems associated with mitigating cascading effects and responding to cascading infrastructure failures once they have occurred. The major challenge associated with preparedness for cascading failures is that they transcend system, corporate, and political boundaries and necessitate coordination among multiple, disparate experts and authorities. This symposium brought together concerned communities including government and industry …
