Has The Education And Health Relationship Changed Over Time?A Panel Analysis Of Age, Period, And Cohort Effects, Wesley Lynn James May 2009

Has The Education And Health Relationship Changed Over Time?A Panel Analysis Of Age, Period, And Cohort Effects, Wesley Lynn James

Theses and Dissertations

Two vital American social institutions, education and health care, are intimately related. The individual-level relationship between education and health is tenuous, changing over time, throughout the life course, and across generations. Previous research in this area does not separate the mediating effects of age, period, and cohort or assess the unique effects of various levels of educational attainment on health. Using longitudinal data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, this dissertation untangles these factors to find that education has become a more important predictor of health now than twenty years ago, education benefits health across the life course, and …

Natural And Necessary Language: A Newcomer Resource Manual, Shelley Joy Henry

All Graduate Projects

American public schools are experiencing a dramatic rise in immigrant students. These "newcomer students" have unique needs. Providing "newcomer students" with a specialized, short term program allows them the gift of time as they make major adjustments to many new aspects of life in the United States. Public schools are challenged to assess the needs and provide the most appropriate research based teaching practices for this special group of students. The research shows layers of diversity among "newcomer students" which requires careful implementation of instruction and curriculum to create a safe environment for learning the English language, core content, and …

Coping With Loss: A Khmer Perspective On Guiding Children And Adolescents Upon The Death Of A Loved One, Sekboppa Sor

Senior Honors Projects

The emotions that come with death and dying, such as grief, sadness and anger are experienced by everyone at some point in their lifetime. Because death is such a sensitive subject, many people are hesitant to explain the process to children. Children, like adults, experience loss and it is important that they understand how to cope with the issue if and when it affects them. Soon after the death, mourning begins. The mourning process serves as an opportunity for individuals to express their emotions after a loss through their own traditions and rituals. For many individuals, it is an important …

None Of Us Are As Smart As All Of Us: Site Based Decision Making, Peggy B. Gill, Ross B. Sherman, Timothy B. Jones

Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

In recent years, the educational system in the United States has been evolving from a largely centralized decision-making structure to a more decentralized one. This shift to school-based management requires fundamental changes to the organizational structure of the district as well as the roles within the organization. From administrators to parents, school based management demands a change in the "status quo" (Cotton, 1991). It involves shifting decision making from the central office administrators to that of local schools (Henkin, Cistone and Dee, 1999).

Survey Of Adult Cystic Fibrosis Patients And Parents Of Cystic Fibrosis Patients On Nutrition Education, Dixie Lea Durham

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disorder affecting more than 30,000 Americans, primarily Caucasians (CF Foundation, n.d.a). A defective gene on the seventh chromosome is inherited from the mother and the father. This gene causes the body to produce an abnormal protein that leads to thick, sticky mucus that is secreted by the lungs, pancreas, liver, sweat glands, and reproductive organs. The pancreas normally excretes enzymes that aid in the digestion of food, however this function is impaired in CF, and therefore CF patients must ingest replacement enzymes (CF Foundation, n.d.a). Despite advances in treatment, including replacement enzymes, under-nutrition and …

America Inc.: The Rise And Fall Of A Civil Democracy, Keith W. Edmonds May 2009

America Inc.: The Rise And Fall Of A Civil Democracy, Keith W. Edmonds

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The field of Curriculum Studies has thoroughly outlined the detrimental effects of corporate ideology on education in terms of curricular mandates, the corporatization of higher education, rampant privatization, and globalization. Educational mandates have created an atmosphere of control in which students are methodically deprived of exploration and creativity through strict adherence to a prescribed curriculum. This results in the de-skilling of teachers and the loss of Self as students are forced to memorize facts based on educational mandates, with teachers having to constantly redirect outlets for creativity in order to teach to the test. As a result of this study, …

An Exploration Of Experiences And Outcomes Of Alaska Native Graduates Of Mt. Edgecumbe High School, Diane Hirshberg, Brit Delmoral

CAEPR Reports

In Alaska’s schools, indigenous1 students are the most at risk of any ethnic group of failing to thrive; they drop out more frequently, are less likely to graduate, and generally have lower educational attainment than non-Native students(Martin and Hill, 2009). Indeed, the situation appears to be worsening. The dropout rate of Alaska Native students living in all areas of Alaska besides Anchorage has risen from 0.7 percent in 1996 to 3.3 percent in 2001 (Goldsmith et al. 2004). Dropout rates among all Native students in Alaska increased from 5 percent to almost 10 percent between 1998 and 2001, while the …

Child Safety And Children In The Education System: Prioritizing The Need For Statewide Anti-Bullying Policies, Angelique Day

Social Work Faculty Publications

This study was conducted to explore the responses of 380 students enrolled at Michigan State University who had experienced bullying in high school as victims, perpetrators, and witnesses. Findings included significant predictors of bullying behavior. For example, male students were more likely to bully than their female counterparts; and bystanders who witnessed bullying incidents were more likely to become both victims and/or perpetrators of bullying. The MSU students offered recommendations for policymakers to create anti-bullying legislation with enforcement guidelines and other methods of improving school culture to reduce future bullying incidents.
