Study To Show Thyself Approved: The Case For Continuing Clergy Education, Dan R. Jividen
Study To Show Thyself Approved: The Case For Continuing Clergy Education, Dan R. Jividen
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
There has been little study focused upon the role of the pastor's personal growth and how it may relate to growth or the lack thereof in the local church. Although the problem of ministerial competence as a whole can not be fully addressed in the limited scope of this project, it is this writer's contention that much of the plateau in church growth experienced in Southern Baptist Churches today may be predicated by the lack of ministerial training in the churches of the Southern Baptist Convention as a whole. It is the intent of this project to determine if there …

A Few Drops Of Oil Will Not Be Enough, Stephen James
A Few Drops Of Oil Will Not Be Enough, Stephen James
Human Rights & Human Welfare
Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn provide a rich description of the various kinds of violence, deprivation, depredation and exploitation that women experience on a vast scale in the developing world. They write of sex trafficking, acid attacks, “bride burning,” enslavement, spousal beatings, unequal healthcare (something the USA still struggles with), insufficient food, gendered abortions and infant and maternal mortality. They are right to identify the education of women and girls as part of the solution to the widespread “gendercide.” However, their approach focuses too much on the capacity, indeed the virtue or heroism, of individual women. It does not take …

Funny Money: How Federal Education Funding Hurts Poor And Minority Students, Cassandra Jones Havard
All Faculty Scholarship
Neither race nor class alone can predict educational achievement. However, in America, disparities in funding for education may be an impediment to educational opportunity for disadvantaged youth. At the crux of the Nation's achievement gap among minority children is the question of the how states should allocate federal education funds, and how local school districts should use those monies. Educators have long recognized that the socioeconomic circumstances of many public school students present great educational challenges. Since 1965, Congress has authorized the use of federal funds by local school districts to remedy the achievement gap.

The Impact Of Indian Gaming On Educational Attainment, Poverty Among Native American Tribes, Aaron Diaz
Sociology ETDs
What is the impact of Indian gaming on educational attainment among Native American tribes? Is there a correlation between Indian gaming and poverty rates? Utilizing a combination of cross-sectional analysis and longitudinal case studies, I examine whether Indian gaming has an impact on educational attainment. I also explore the economic mechanism of how this effect occurs. I analyze the 1990 and 2000 census data in addition to raw data collected from the National Indian Gaming Commission website, which provided the year selected Native American tribes were approved to pursue the establishment of gaming on their reservations. No significance was recorded …
Human Capital And Economic Growth: Theory And Policy., Bidisha Chakraborty Dr.
Human Capital And Economic Growth: Theory And Policy., Bidisha Chakraborty Dr.
Doctoral Theses
Growth theory is one of the most important branches of macroeconomics. Growth theory helps us to understand the intertemporal behaviour of a dynamic economy and to understand the properties of the long-run rate of economic growth. It identifies the factors causing the deviation of the actual rate of growth from the socially efficient rate of growth and analyses the effectiveness of various policies in removing this gap. It analyses the condition of stability of the long-run equilibrium and also attempts to establish links between the long run equilibrium and the persistence of underdevelopment. With the emergence of the ‘new’ growth theory, …

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
MEDICAL STUDENTS EXPOSURE AND RESPONSE TO ERROR ON THE WARDS Kimberly B. Gold, Paul D. Cleary, Department of Public Health, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. Medical errors are common and cause extraordinary costs. Errors should be openly discussed and learned from. Medical schools have been slow to adopt curricula on medical errors, or training in how to respond to errors. Since error disclosure remains incomplete, students may be lacking both formal and informal education in error management. Our aims were to describe students knowledge about medical errors and error reporting, their attitudes toward medical errors and error …

Remarks By Su Chancellor & President Nancy Cantor Chancellor's Convocation For New Students, August 2009, Nancy Cantor
Chancellor's Collection
Just a few months ago, here in the dome, our graduating students heard from Vice President Joe Biden, a graduate of the SU College of Law. As I look at you today, some of his words keep going through my mind. He said that we are standing at an inflection point in history, where the curve shifts, everything comes together and everything changes. The same can be said for you today – this is your inflection point, when you can shape not only your future, but all of ours. As Biden said: “Absent … input and leadership, the world will …

The Culture Of Poverty: How It Affects Middle School Students, Kaycie Anne Tuttle
All Graduate Projects
In education, teachers are seeing more impoverished students than ever before. With that understanding, teachers need to know how to identify and assist these students so that they are successful in school. The War on Poverty has been going on for years, and with a failing economy, teachers are seeing more impoverished students in their classrooms. To counteract this situation, teachers will be shown a pamphlet, power point presentation, and a workshop on poverty which will help show teachers what their students may be experiencing when away from school. In addition, the pamphlet will provide information of what to look …

Students most at-risk for academic failure are the populations of students classified as English Language Learners; migrant students; special education students; children of poverty; homeless students; students in foster care; children of abuse or neglect; and children with social, emotional, or behavioral concerns. The number of students falling within the at-risk population of students has continued to increase over the years. A program and curriculum called Kindergarten Connection attempts to address these barriers to learning by identifying family, societal and academic concerns prior to kindergarten and connecting families to the school and community resources that will provide the needed support. …
