Little Rock Woman's Christian Temperance Union, 1888 To 1903, Jane Ann Wilkerson
Little Rock Woman's Christian Temperance Union, 1888 To 1903, Jane Ann Wilkerson
Theses and Dissertations
In discussions about the women's rights, organizations such as the National Organization for Women or the National American Woman Suffrage Association often overshadow the contributions of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). Most know of the WCTU's efforts against alcohol but little is known about the group's work toward woman's suffrage. In fact, the Little Rock organization became one of the WCTU's strongest local unions. It worked to change the lives of women and children not only in the city, but also statewide. Members' skills and unique backgrounds helped the union reach many of its goals. During these efforts it …

In 2005, the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology accepted a donation of orthodontic patient records from an orthodontist who has been practicing in the Albuquerque area since the early 1970s. This collection represents a diversity of patients not often encountered in orthodontic training in the United States. A virtual, de-identified, web-based version of a subset of the collection is now being developed. Users can search for cases with particular characteristics of interest (e.g., patient ancestry, extraction patterns, diagnoses, and cephalometric parameters), then review sequential intra-oral and Xray images to observe treatment outcomes. An innovative feature of the database is that it …

The Unique Challenges Faced By South Asian American Social Work Graduate Students : Campus Communities, Academics, And Field : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Sumati Shireen Holman
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study was conducted to explore the types of challenges faced by South Asian American social work students in all components of their graduate program, perceived to be directly related to their ethnicity. Nine participants were recruited using a snowball method. Participants ranged in age from 31 to 76 years old and were currently attending, or had attended, an MSW or DSW program in the United States. A semi-structured open-ended interview was used to elicit participant response regarding challenges in the areas of social interaction with other students on campus, a sense of belonging, academics, and field experience with supervisors …
A Case Study Of The Significant Events And Legal Parameters Surrounding Charter School Movement At The State And Federal Level, Monica L. Ilse
A Case Study Of The Significant Events And Legal Parameters Surrounding Charter School Movement At The State And Federal Level, Monica L. Ilse
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
All states have different perspectives and various statutes within broader constitutional law. Perception of public dissatisfaction with public schools has led to choice schooling options for parents. One of the fastest growing choice options in schooling is charter schools; schools privately run by organizations through public funds. This study analyzes the governance of charter schools and how charters operate under legal guidelines and Florida statutes, with significant legislative events cited. This study answers the following questions as they relate to evolution and legal parameters surrounding the charter movement using exploratory case study method: 1) What is the evolution of the …
Improving Education As Key To Enhancing Adaptive Capacity In Developing Countries, Wolfgang Lutz
Improving Education As Key To Enhancing Adaptive Capacity In Developing Countries, Wolfgang Lutz
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This paper summarizes new scientific evidence supporting the hypothesis that among the many factors contributing to international development, the combination of education and health stands out as a root cause on which other dimensions of development depend. Much of this recent analysis is based on new reconstructions and projections of populations by age, sex and four levels of educational attainment for more than 120 countries using the demographic method of multi-state population dynamics. It also refers to a series of systems analytical population–development–environment case studies that comprehensively assess the role of population and education factors relative to other factors in …

Webster's Dictionary Definition Of Creativity, Joyce R. Robinson
Webster's Dictionary Definition Of Creativity, Joyce R. Robinson
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
Creativity is considered important for our society to maintain its current economic status. Creativity is the key to achieving a better standard of living; this makes creativity an important element in a student's education. One factor that limits the capability to respond to educational needs is the lack of agreement about what the term creativity means. One source used to determine the correct meaning of a word is the dictionary. A longitudinal review of the definitions of creativity was conducted in dictionaries dating back to the 1950's. Nineteen dictionaries dating from 1953 to 2008 were reviewed. Although terms are updated …

Gender Inequality And Terrorism: An Analysis Of The Effects Of Socioeconomic Gender Inequality On Terrorism, Jennifer Dumas
Gender Inequality And Terrorism: An Analysis Of The Effects Of Socioeconomic Gender Inequality On Terrorism, Jennifer Dumas
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Studies of terrorism have explored a number of factors thought to drive the phenomenon. Authors often tie socioeconomic development to reducing terrorism. Among structural explanations of terrorism, however, authors generally neglect the effect of gender inequality, though studies show that gender inequality increases the risk of international and civil conflict. Therefore I explore the impact of gender inequality in important socioeconomic issues on terrorism for 143 countries from 1998-2009. I argue that socioeconomic gender inequality reflects poor state capacity, resulting in grievances that contribute to domestic non-suicide and suicide terrorism. I study gender inequality in the areas of education, labor …
Making Connections: Improving Movement Skills By Integrating Knowledge From Dance Disciplines, Amy D. Howton
Making Connections: Improving Movement Skills By Integrating Knowledge From Dance Disciplines, Amy D. Howton
Faculty Articles
Dance specialist Rebecca Enghauser (2003) has emphasized that, in the dance class, motor learning begins when the student replicates the movements presented. Demonstration is usually a necessary accompaniment to verbal instructions, suggesting that dancers routinely engage in multiple learning styles, including visual, auditor/, and kinesthetic. Enghauser also addressed "random practice," where movement appears in different combinations that then produce better and longer-lasting skill learning. Therefore, relating similar movement from different disciplines should help produce long-term learning. The analysis required when processing these similar, although perhaps outwardly different, movements provides additional and more enduring learning opportunities. Enghauser also addressed "random practice," …

Development Of A Nutrition Education Program For Hispanic Women Of South Carolina Based On Nutrition And Cooking Classes Using The Health Belief Model And The Social Cognitive Theory, Marta Gamboa Acuna
All Dissertations
During 2005, Hispanics became the largest minority group in the country. In the case of South Carolina during 2006, the Hispanic population represented 3.5% of its entire population. In general, Hispanics have lower level of income and education, and higher obesity rates than other ethnic groups. In addition, several studies have shown that Hispanics lack a basic knowledge regarding health and healthy eating, food combinations, portion size and cooking skills. The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a nutrition and cooking program for Hispanics with low income and low education levels. To determine participants' needs, an instrument …
Social Networks And Beliefs Of Mexican-American Parents As Predictors Of Parent Involvement, Maria Filomena Leo
Social Networks And Beliefs Of Mexican-American Parents As Predictors Of Parent Involvement, Maria Filomena Leo
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Parents interact with school officials as social actors, with the cultural and social capital they possess. The school as a social institution operates within given processes to deliver educational services. The needs of both the parent and the school system may not always be suited to a harmonious relationship: still, it is possible to build a system to close that gap. In such a system each can reach across to help one another. This happens when schools understand the social forces that motivate parents to become involved with schools for the sake of their children. This study surveyed Mexican-American parents …

Dental Hypotheses: Seeks To Publish Hypotheses From All Areas Of Dentistry, Edward F. Rossomando
UCHC Articles - Research
Starting a new open access journal in a rapid growing scientific panorama is a severe challenge. However, the first issue of dental hypotheses is now history and the even skeptics can appreciate that dental hypotheses is a success - it is a journal of high quality that provides an outlet for publication of articles that encourage readers to question dental paradigms. But dental hypotheses readers might have noticed that the majority of the articles published in the first issue of dental hypotheses concern clinical dentistry. However, dental hypotheses editors recognize that there are many other areas in dentistry that present …

Visionary Of Control: The Efficiency, Expertise, And Exclusion Of Alexander James Inglis, Heidi Tilney Kramer
Visionary Of Control: The Efficiency, Expertise, And Exclusion Of Alexander James Inglis, Heidi Tilney Kramer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Alexander James Inglis was the key contributor to changes enacted in education during the Progressive era. He instituted an administrative and curricular hierarchy in order to create social organization during a chaotic time in American history, thus advancing professionalism in teaching and systematizing a future workforce - teaching previously had no standards, and throngs of immigrants overwhelmed the school system. While necessary at the time, this system of centralization, homogenization, and sorting continues to result in exclusion in secondary education and middle schools. Categorization is Inglis' hallmark in his work in education, following Frederick W. Taylor's managerial practices, and he …
Preparing A Student With A Disability And Their Family For Transition Into Adulthood, Katherine Matwiczak-Weber
Preparing A Student With A Disability And Their Family For Transition Into Adulthood, Katherine Matwiczak-Weber
All Graduate Projects
As a student with a disability makes the transition from high school to adult life, together the student and the family are faced with decisions and challenges outside the support of the school system. There are certain time lines and criteria that need to be fulfilled in order to make the change successful as well guarantee the student's rights and entitlements both financially and vocationally from the federal government and other community based systems. Transition-focused educators have long advocated for a vision of post-school life for the young adult with a disability that includes community and social interactions in addition …

Aid, Policies And Long-Run Growth, Benjamin J. Morley
Aid, Policies And Long-Run Growth, Benjamin J. Morley
Undergraduate Economic Review
This paper analyses the relationship between aid, policies and growth in 54 countries over 45 years. Specifically it hypothesises that if aid affects growth then it does so over a long period of time and that the extent to which this is true depends on an individual country’s policy environment. This paper both finds no direct relationship between aid and growth, and that the effectiveness of aid does not depend on the policy environment. This paper therefore adds to the existing evidence showing that Burnside and Dollar’s (2000) result of aid effectiveness does not have external validity.

A Comparative Study Of Knowledge Of Pain Management In Certified And Non-Certified Oncology Nurses, Sherrie A. Lalande
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Over 1.4 million people are diagnosed with cancer annually. Of those people, 70-90% experience some form of pain. Numerous efforts have been made to educate nurses in the management of pain, yet 30-50% of cancer patients report that their pain is poorly managed. It is not clear whether nurses who obtain certification in Oncology are better equipped to manage this patient population regarding their pain issues. This study compared the knowledge of Oncology Certified Nurses (OCN) and Non-Certified Oncology Nurses (NCON) regarding pain management.
The sample of 41 oncology nurses included 19 who were certified in oncology and 22 who …
Gender Bias In Education In West Bengal., Chayanika Mitra Dr.
Gender Bias In Education In West Bengal., Chayanika Mitra Dr.
Doctoral Theses
There exists a vast literature with evidences of gender discrimination against females in allocation of goods and services at regional/national level in India. Evidence of gender bias on Indian data include, among many others, studies by Subramanian and Deaton (1991), Azam and Kingdon (2013), Kingdon (2005), Drèze and Kingdon (2001), Zimmerman (2012) and Lancaster, Maitra, and Ray (2008). India has a history of preference for sons over daughters for cultural and economic reasons. This is manifested through high birth sex ratios, which is possibly a result of female foeticide. The child sex ratio is within the normal natural range in …
How Do We Define A Medical School? : Reflections On The Occasion Of The Centennial Of The Flexner Report, Hans Karle
How Do We Define A Medical School? : Reflections On The Occasion Of The Centennial Of The Flexner Report, Hans Karle
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
A century after the Flexner Report on medical education in North America, which revolutionised the training of medical doctors all over the world, it is time to revisit this famous document and analyse symptoms and signs of a return to pre-Flexnerian conditions. With the ongoing mushroom growth over the last decades of small, proprietary educational institutions of low quality and driven by for-profit purposes, medical education is in a threatened position. This trend is of general international interest because of the increasing migration of medical doctors. There is a need for discussion of what should be the rational criteria and …
