Understanding The Lived Experience Of Nursing Practice In Haiti, Lorraine E. Emeghebo, Judith C. James-Borga Mar 2016

Understanding The Lived Experience Of Nursing Practice In Haiti, Lorraine E. Emeghebo, Judith C. James-Borga

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on Saturday, November 7, 2015:

With 80% of its population living below the poverty line, Haiti remains one of the lowest resource countries in the Western hemisphere. Compounding the high morbidly and mortality rates is the shortage of all levels of healthcare personnel including nurses. Most of the health care in Haiti is delivered by Registered Nurses (RN), the overwhelming majority of whom are diploma educated. Research shows that better nursing consistently leads to better outcomes for patients. Increasing the number of nurses with the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree is central to reducing morbidity and …

Evaluation Of An Athletics Model To Develop Values For Professional Practice, Amy C. Shay, Karen Beckstedt Montoya

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on Tuesday, November 10, 2015: Purpose: The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has identified values and ethics as a competency for interprofessional collaborative practice and the education of baccalaureate nursing students. Yet the abstract nature of values and the lack of emphasis and example in modern culture make professionalism education in nursing very challenging. Students must learn to demonstrate values that are essential for effective coordination of care, improved patient outcomes, and for continued representation as the nation's most trusted profession. This research study, currently in progress, describes an innovative athletics-inspired approach to the professional values …

Listening To Student Voices: A Critical Study Of Homework, Michael Bates Mar 2016

Listening To Student Voices: A Critical Study Of Homework, Michael Bates

LMU Theses and Dissertations

In a culture of meritocracy and an increasing emphasis on global competition, student learning has become more fully aligned with a belief in the value and effectiveness of homework. Amidst the incessant drive toward competition and an unrelenting push toward an increasing use of homework as commonplace educational practice, there also exist clarion calls to question, reform, and abolish this practice. From student stress to overarching challenges to the nature of education, there exist unexamined discourses that critically challenge current beliefs in the significance of homework practice in the United States. Through employing discussions of student voice and theoretical lenses …

A Place To Belong: Critical Queer Pedagogy For Social Justice In Catholic Education, Roydavid Villanueva Quinto

LMU Theses and Dissertations

A growing number of gay and lesbian children attend Catholic schools throughout the United States; and an untold number of gay and lesbian children in Catholic schools are experiencing harassment, violence, and prejudice because of their sexual orientation or gender non-conformity. Whether due to their size, strong sense of community, or making special considerations for vulnerable students, Catholic schools seem to be the best equipped to address these issues, but all of the research points to such schools enacting policies of silence and suppression. This study specifically explores why Catholic teachings on sexuality and social justice have may have been …

Fostering The Development Of Intuitive Decision-Making In Nursing: An Evidence-Based Model, Leslie Karns Payne

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on Sunday, July 26, 2015:

Decision-making is a complex process involving interaction between many areas of the brain, and the physiology involved remains poorly understood. However, it is agreed, the making of a sound decision requires the integration of sensory, limbic, and autonomic information and is dependent on memory, patteRNecognition, and cognition (Bechara, Damasio & Damasio, 2000; Segalowitz, 2007). Nursing literature dealing with decision-making demonstrates the need for further empirical study. According to Thompson et al. (2013), the majority of educational interventions geared toward improving decision-making and judgment within nursing did not include decision-making theory as a foundation. …

Objective: To evaluate the reliability of a peer evaluation instrument in a longitudinal team-based learning setting.

Methods: Student pharmacists were instructed to evaluate the contributions of their peers. Evaluations were analyzed for the variance of the scores by identifying low, medium, and high scores. Agreement between performance ratings within each group of students was assessed via intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC).

Results: We found little variation in the standard deviation (SD) based on the score means among the high, medium, and low scores within each group. The lack of variation in SD of results between groups suggests that …

An Introduction To Emotional Intelligence, Aiden Carthy, Ailish Jameson Mar 2016

An Introduction To Emotional Intelligence, Aiden Carthy, Ailish Jameson

Book/Book Chapter

In recent decades, there has been increasing focus on the role of formal education in empowering students’ social and moral development. A wealth of research evidence has shown that helping students to develop their social and emotional competencies can encourage students’ personal growth and can also yield benefits including increased student engagement and decreased levels of drop-out. However, much of what has been previously published in this field has focused on younger students, and there has been a lesser focus on third level students and educators. Therefore, there is a notable need for a single volume that synopsises the research …

More Than Constraints: How Low Socio-Economic Parents Make Judgments Concerning Their Children's Schooling, Michelle Heather Lucier Mar 2016

More Than Constraints: How Low Socio-Economic Parents Make Judgments Concerning Their Children's Schooling, Michelle Heather Lucier

Theses and Dissertations

As school choice opportunities have become more prevalent and information about schools more readily available, there is still a lack of understanding of how parents use information to evaluate schools. The discussion around school judgment-making predominately focuses on whether parents know about school choice and the constraints parents face which limit choice, but I investigate, using 91 interviews of parents living in a low socio-economic community, how parents make judgments and evaluate schools past the discussion of what schools are available to parents and the constraints those parents face. The results of this study are that parents use heuristics—specifically familiarity, …

Contemplative Early Childhood Leadership, Mongkonrat Parks Mar 2016

Contemplative Early Childhood Leadership, Mongkonrat Parks
