Social, Health, Education And Economic Effects Of Covid-19 On Adolescent Girls In Kenya: Responses From The First Round Of Adolescent Data Collection, August 2020—Kisumu, Population Council
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Between August 15 and 18, 2020, a COVID-19 phone survey was completed with 603 10–19-year-old adolescents in Kisumu, Kenya, a port city on Lake Victoria. Households were part of the DREAMS program and evaluation cohort. This brief concludes that COVID-19 public education campaigns in Kisumu should focus on addressing the health, economic, and social impacts of lockdowns. Knowledge of symptoms and transmission is relatively high, and most adolescents still say they are interacting with a lot of people when they go out. Ensuring mask wearing, handwashing, and staying home unless urgent is critical to reducing transmission. Ensuring access to educational …

Social, Health, Education And Economic Effects Of Covid-19 On Adolescent Girls In Kenya: Responses From The First Round Of Adolescent Data Collection, August 2020—Kilifi, Population Council
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Between August 15 and 18, 2020, a COVID-19 phone survey was completed with 1,603 10–19-year-old adolescents in Kilifi, Kenya, north of Mombasa. Households were part of the Evaluation of the Nia Project cohort. This brief concludes that COVID-19 public education campaigns in Kisumu should focus on addressing the health, economic, and social impacts of lockdowns. It should be clarified that one can have COVID-19 and not show symptoms and can infect others even if asymptomatic, and common myths surrounding COVID-19 should be addressed. The need to expand the options for students to access educational materials during the period of school …

Social, Health, Education And Economic Effects Of Covid-19 On Adolescent Girls In Kenya: Responses From The First Round Of Adolescent Data Collection, August 2020—Wajir, Population Council
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Between July 16 and 30, 2020, a phone survey was completed with 1,234 adolescents ages 10–19 in Wajir, Kenya. All participants were part of the ongoing Adolescent Girls Initiative–Kenya cohort covering 79 villages in Wajir County, an underdeveloped area in Northeastern Kenya along the border with Somalia. As noted in this brief, adolescents in Wajir have been impacted by COVID-19 and related mitigation measures, primarily through school closures and economic losses. Many have been unable to continue learning or schoolwork from home while schools have been closed, and meal distribution to address rising food insecurity is needed. The pandemic has …

Fishing Without A Pole: Experiences And Insights Of Adults Working To Prevent Youth Suicide In A Low-Income, High-Rate State, Victoria L. Waugh-Reed
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
This study explores the underrepresented perspective of suicide preventionists in the state of New Mexico, their experiences and insights surrounding the prevention of youth suicide. I present these in narrative form; the primary method of investigation was purposeful, individual interviews with an initial and follow-up interviews. Preventionists in New Mexico face the enormous task of reducing historically high youth suicide rates when compared with the rest of the nation; additionally, New Mexico is a rural state that exhibits a complex mix of risk and resiliency factors. I invited participants to discuss their experiences, share barriers to their work, offer success …
A Meeting Of The Minds: Utilizing Maine’S State Education System To Promote The Success Of Its Native Students While Maintaining Tribal Sovereignty, Jordan T. Ramharter
A Meeting Of The Minds: Utilizing Maine’S State Education System To Promote The Success Of Its Native Students While Maintaining Tribal Sovereignty, Jordan T. Ramharter
Maine Law Review
The United States Federal Government is failing to provide its Native American students with access to equal educational opportunities. Although “tribal sovereignty” provides tribes with the right to self-govern, a “trust relationship” is maintained between the sovereign nations and the federal government. This duality results in tribes being viewed as “domestic dependent nations” by the federal government. Due to this relationship, the federal government has long recognized not only a right, but a duty to utilize its plenary powers to develop necessary legislative and executive authority in order to support the nation’s tribes. Encompassed in this duty is the responsibility, …
How Much Is Too Much?: Administrative Burden And Texas State Policy, Dominique J. Baker
How Much Is Too Much?: Administrative Burden And Texas State Policy, Dominique J. Baker
Mission Foods Texas-Mexico Center Research
Several states, including Texas, have implemented an “excess semester credit hours (ESCH)” policy. State ESCH policies assess a fee to students at public institutions when they exceed a set number of lifetime cumulative credit hours (e.g., students with more than the 120 credit hours needed for a bachelor’s degree). Little is known about the administrative burden the implementation of and communication about state ESCH policies places on students. Therefore, I conducted a document analysis of the websites of all Texas public institutions. I analyzed 120 documents that were collected from November 2019 to April 2020. While some institutions created systems …

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Abstract
Trafficking in persons; especially children, have been a major concern in the fields of medicine, early childhood development, and social welfare among others. The impact of trafficking on victims of all ages is devastating. However, after their rescue, intervention processes have been rehabilitation and reintegration into societies of origin in most instances. The current study investigated the experiences of child victims rescued from fishing on Lake Volta, Ghana and reunited with their families in communities from where they were once trafficked. The study explored (a) whether or not reintegrated trafficked victims of school going age were placed in school; …

Social Policy Institute Research
COVID-19 created an additional barrier for students who benefit from free school meals. While some schools attempted to provide alternative meal access points, many students lack adequate transportation. Thus, physical proximity to meal access points is particularly important during the pandemic. Taking into account both the “supply” and the “demand” for free meals, we employed a two-step floating catchment area analysis to analyze meal accessibility in St. Louis, MO. Overall, while meal access during the spring 2020 semester was substantially lower than the spring 2019 semester, meal access during the 2020 summer was substantially higher than the 2019 summer. Moreover, …

Facilitating A Path To New Teacher Certification Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic: Unpacking States’ Unchanged-New Flex” Guidelines, Laura E. Slay, Jacqueline Riley, Karyn E. Miller
Faculty Publications
In the United States, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, schools and testing centers were forced to close on-site locations. With teacher candidates no longer able to complete clinical teaching or take certification exams in person, states created new recommendations for facilitating a pathway to teacher certification. Specifically, 19 states provided guidelines that allowed educator preparation programs (EPPs) flexibility in how teacher candidates completed existing certification requirements. By analyzing summaries of these states’ guidelines, themes of time, technology, flexibility/nonflexibility, and EPPs emerged. Using a comprehensive lens, this brief examines the role and implications of each of these themes in teacher certification during …

Financial Capability And Asset Building In Social And Economic Development: Advancing The Sustainable Development Goals, David Ansong, Moses Okumu, Jin Huang`, Margaret S. Sherraden, Lissa Johnson, Li Zou
Center for Social Development Research
The concern for economic well-being undergirds most of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This Perspective articulates an agenda for advancing those goals in resource-constrained countries by leveraging financial capability and asset-building (FCAB) strategies. It also specifies a role for financial technology (commonly called “FinTech”) in this work. The authors conclude with a call for better integrating FCAB and FinTech into plans for advancing the SDGs.

Finding A Place For World War I In American History: 1914-2018, Jennifer D. Keene
History Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"World War I has occupied an uneasy place in the American public and political consciousness.1 In the 1920s and 1930s, controversies over the war permeated the nation’s cultural and political life, influencing memorial culture and governmental policy. Interest in the war, however, waned considerably after World War II, a much larger and longer war for the United States. Despite a plethora of scholarly works examining nearly every aspect of the war, interest in the war remains limited even among academic historians. In many respects, World War I became the “forgotten war” because Americans never developed a unifying collective memory about …

Enhancing Faculty Skills: An Innovative Strategy To Improve Teaching Practices, Matthew S. Howard, Danielle Perkins
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
According to AACN's report on 2016-2017 Salaries of Instructional and Administrative Nursing Faculty, the average ages of doctorally-prepared nurse faculty holding the ranks of professor, associate professor, and assistant professor were 62.4, 57.2, and 51.2 years, respectively. For master's degree-prepared nurse faculty, the average ages for professors, associate professors, and assistant professors were 55.5, 56.4, and 50.6 years, respectively. Efforts to expand the nurse educator population are frustrated by the fact that thousands of qualified applicants to graduate nursing programs are turned away each year due to declining numbers of qualified nursing faculty.

Reflections On Bodies And Absences In The Covid-19 Interregnum, Matthew Weinstein
Reflections On Bodies And Absences In The Covid-19 Interregnum, Matthew Weinstein
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
This is a meditation on the role of absence during the COVID-19, especially the ways absences are felt and experienced. It explores the roles of bodies as both symbols and material. Bodies are both thought through the logic of borders and difference but also as the raw resources of scientific investigations. This is all examined within and against “education” both in my and in my students’ (pre and in-service teachers) classes and our anxieties of not knowing the what or how we of our jobs in these conditions.

What Is Education For? A Response To "What Kind Of Citizens Do Educators Hope Their Students Become? A Response To 'Storypath: A Powerful Tool For Engaging Children In Civic Learning.'", Margit E. Mcguire, Laurie Stevahn, Shari Wennik Bronsther
Democracy & Education
Darwich (2020) asked “What Kind of Citizens Do Educators Hope Their Students Become?” in her response to “Storypath: A Powerful Tool for Engaging Children in Civic Education” (McGuire et al., 2019). She argued that civics should be rooted in social justice grounded by critical civic empathy, which requires focusing on power and privilege given persistent disparities in caring for all people within our democracy. We agree and here further emphasize the importance of dismantling systems of oppression that block efforts to advance this goal. We also recognize pragmatic complexities in elementary school classrooms that require teacher professional judgment to create …

The Development Of A Portfolio For Academic Promotion And Tenure For Occupational Therapy Educators, David Levan
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Advancement of occupational therapy educators is a significant achievement and important contribution to the American Occupational Therapy Association’s Vision 2025 and Centennial Vision. Successful promotion demands excellence and active engagement in faculty skill development, both of which are essential to student learning. The academic promotion and tenure process presents a new and unfamiliar expectation for entry-level and tenure-track occupational therapy educators. A multitude of institutional policies and procedures, formal and informal recommendations from administrators and colleagues, and lack of mentorship can make planning for academic promotion and tenure confusing and difficult. The purpose of this article is to provide …

Comparing In Vivo Versus Simulation Training For Transnasal Endoscopy Skills, Laura L. Wolford, George W. Wolford
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluations of swallowing (FEES) is as important of a swallowing evaluation as the videoflouroscopic swallow study, but far fewer speech-language pathologists are competent in its use (Ambika, Datta, Manjula, Warawantkar, & Thomas, 2019; Brady & Donzelli, 2013; Pisegna & Langmore, 2016). One hurdle in FEES training is the necessity of practicing transnasal endoscopy on volunteers. The primary aim of this study was to compare the learning effectiveness of practicing transnasal endoscopy via simulation with practice in vivo for a student’s first passes of the endoscope. The end goal of this study was to determine the most cost-effective and …
