Exploration Of The Reflective Supervision Relationship: Meaning Making, Communication, And Transformative Learning In Educational Environments, Elizabeth Betsy Stoelt

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Reflective supervision is ongoing professional development, often utilized by the social work field that originates from infant mental health supervisory practices. Reflective supervision increases one’s capacity to become aware and manage the strong emotions that are inherent in direct service work and understand relational dynamics within families and between professionals and family members. Using the 3 central tenets of collaboration, reflection and regularity, the goal of reflective supervision is to develop and maintain effective service delivery by understanding the practitioner’s positionality. This study utilized the practice of reflective supervision with five educators over a 10-week period of time. The goal …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationships among perceived organizational support, teacher well-being, and teacher resilience in secondary school teachers in Ohio public schools. An explanatory sequential mixed methods research design was employed. In phase one, survey data were collected from Ohio public school teachers (n = 254, grades 6-12), and structural equation modeling was used to analyze the structure of the relationships between the variables of interest. In phase two, using a phenomenological approach, follow-up interviews were conducted with a subset of participants (n = 10) to examine the lived experience of teachers with high and low levels of teacher resilience. …

Adapting Higher Education: Revamping Curricula For The Inclusion Of Theatre Students With Disabilities, Kevin Kemler Jan 2023

Adapting Higher Education: Revamping Curricula For The Inclusion Of Theatre Students With Disabilities, Kevin Kemler

Theses and Dissertations

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion initiatives in higher education have been largely driven by administrators who have little to no contact with the students for whom they are working for. This top-down approach negatively impacts marginalized students and disproportionately affects the quality of experience for students with Disabilities, an often-overlooked demographic. For Disabled students enrolled in performance programs, barriers to access and inclusion don’t just exist at the institutional level, they also exist in the traditional classroom or studio as well. Through a dismantling of ableist structures inherent within higher education (i.e., American grading practices, the Western and Theatrical Canons), I …

Discrimination Of Black People In Kansas City Metro Schools, Shelby A Cobb Jan 2023

Discrimination Of Black People In Kansas City Metro Schools, Shelby A Cobb

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

In the United States, education has faced a great deal of scrutiny, particularly, in the last few years. While schools have been integrated, there is more segregation and inequality in education than there was prior to desegregation. Many laws have worked to promote quality education for all, but the majority of these laws have created more issues for people of color. Rather than addressing the issues of systemic racism, the modifications to education have misdirected public focus to specific schools rather than a system of inequality. This study addresses ways that schools could improve to create a level of equity …

The surveys measured attitude, knowledge, and behaviors related to respiratory safety and PPE practices. Pulmonary function testing, educational handouts, and respirator fit testing was provided in a variety of settings, and one N95 mask was given to each participant. Two surveys were distributed 3 months post-intervention.
Results: The pre- and post-intervention surveys were matched …

The shared goals and expectations of these various approaches to high school learning are designed for students to complete their state’s graduation requirements to earn a high school diploma while also preparing them for life after high school. Career and technical education (CTE) is another approach that is attempting …

Performance Gaps And Opportunities For Growth: Addressing Remote Learning In Nevada, Anna Dreibelbis-Colquitt Jan 2023

Performance Gaps And Opportunities For Growth: Addressing Remote Learning In Nevada, Anna Dreibelbis-Colquitt

BYU Education & Law Journal

Although education is not a fundamental right under the United States Constitution, it is nonetheless deemed as “perhaps the most important function of state and local governments.” The importance of education is reinforced through the Nevada Constitution. Specifically, Article 11 states that “[t]he legislature shall provide for a uniform system of common schools,” which is seen through the public school system. However, this ‘uniform’ system drastically changed two years ago with the surge in online learning.

Honors Theses

Multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) is an educational framework that aims to make the general education classroom more inclusive to all students and types of learners. MTSS has been found to improve student growth and achievement and decrease special education referrals through the use of layered supports that allow students to stay in the classroom as much as possible. There is a direct focus on progress monitoring, universal screening, and data-based decision making in order to ensure that all students are getting the support they need, whether it be universal, group-based, or individualized. This study aimed to understand what factors …

Critical Consciousness, Social-Emotional Learning, And Serving Diverse Students, Brooke Poeschl

Masters Theses

Ensuring that adolescents get the care and support they need to be successful both academically and socially is crucial as an educator. A major part of this process is examining your personal biases and beliefs in order to identify areas that may negatively impact the students in your classroom. This is especially true for students who are high needs, either in terms of learning differences or cultural differences. The following addresses how teachers can impact their students and what practices observable within the classroom have shown beneficial to students of diverse backgrounds, with a specific focus on Muslim students. This …

Title Ix And "Menstruation Or Related Conditions", Bridget J. Crawford, Emily Gold Waldman, Marcy L. Karin, Naomi R. Cahn, Elizabeth B. Cooper, Margaret E. Johnson

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 (“Title IX”) prohibits sex discrimination in educational programs or activities receiving federal financial assistance. Neither the statute nor its implementing regulations explicitly define “sex” to include discrimination on the basis of menstruation or related conditions such as perimenopause and menopause. This textual absence has caused confusion over whether Title IX must be interpreted to protect students and other community members from all types of sex-based discrimination. It also calls into question the law's ability to break down systemic sex-based barriers related to menstruation in educational spaces. Absent an interpretation that there …

Impact Of Virtual Simulation-Based Level I Fieldwork On Level Ii Fieldwork Performance, Rebecca Ozelie, Maggie Moeller, Taylor Newmark

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Fieldwork is an essential part of a student’s education and development to become competent in entry-level occupational therapy skills (ACOTE, 2018). The implications of COVID-19 coupled with staffing shortages and an increase in academic programs resulted in academic fieldwork coordinators competing for a limited number of spots. The Accreditation Council of Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) integrated the use of simulation as an instructional method to meet Standard C.1.9 for Fieldwork I. This study used a retrospective cohort design to determine the impact of virtual simulation-based Level I fieldwork on performance in Level II fieldwork. Thirty-seven Doctor of Occupational Therapy students’ …

Government By Algorithms At The Light Of Freedom Of Information Regimes: A Case-By-Case Approach On Adm Systems Within Public Education Sector, María Estrella Gutierrez

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

What the Houston Court qualified as “mysterious ‘black box’ impervious to challenge” was in practice a sophisticated software of many layers of calculations, which rated teachers’ effectiveness to make employment decisions. In the European Union, a system as such would fall under the Proposal for AI Regulation of 2021, which qualifies AI models in education and vocational training as “high-risk” systems. Automated decision-making systems (ADM systems), AI-driven or not, are being increasingly used by governments in public education for different purposes, such as handling applications for undergraduate admission or profiling students and teachers to assess their performance. Across cases and …

Who Votes And Why: Economic And Psychological Predictors Of Political Participation, Rhea Malhotra Jan 2023

Who Votes And Why: Economic And Psychological Predictors Of Political Participation, Rhea Malhotra

Scripps Senior Theses

At the centre of democracy lies the right to vote. The United States of America is considered to be an emblem of democracy, so voting is naturally a topic of discourse in colloquial spheres especially given the long fight for equal voting access. In general, voting is a way for citizens to advocate their needs, interact with contemporary society, and prove their affiliation with their country. That being said, the individual reasons to vote differ from citizen to citizen, but patterns may still exist which is why it is important to explore which variables can predict voting outcomes. By doing …

Climate Change Education: How Can We Teach Climate Change To Create Agency Rather Than Anxiety With Outdoor Education?, Kennedy-Anne Hokulani Marx

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Climate change is leading to an increase in mental health impacts of anxiety, grief, and depression on young people, with many feeling it affects their daily life and functioning. Because of the direct and existential threat that climate change poses to youth, it is essential that educators provide opportunities for students to be informed and empowered through tools to cope with mental health impacts as well as tools for action. Outdoor education can provide the space for educators to engage with climate change discussion and an empowering structure for students to engage with nature, develop problem-solving skills, and strengthen their …

Official Development Assistance (Oda) For Education In Middle East, North Africa (Mena) And South Asia (Sa) : Exploring Allocation Patterns Of Two Major Donor Agencies, The World Bank And United States Agency For International Development Between 1990 And 2015, Maria Ishaq Khan

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation explores the allocation patterns of the official development assistance (ODA) by the World Bank (WB) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in eighteen developing countries of Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and South Asia (SA) for the time-period, 1990-2015. Differing perspectives have been offered by researchers on donor motivations for ODA allocation such as ethical drivers, influence of endogenous country characteristics (educational, socio-political factors of recipient nations) and exogenous considerations (interest of the donor agency) as well as the role of international commitments. This study uses exploratory data analysis (EDA) techniques to evaluate relevant …

The Effects Of Sources Of Revenue On Efficiency In Higher Education In The United States, Dan Phung Nguyen Jan 2023

The Effects Of Sources Of Revenue On Efficiency In Higher Education In The United States, Dan Phung Nguyen

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study has as its aim an exploration of the effects of sources of funding on efficiency in higher education. The question of interest in this study is the extent to which differences among campuses in “demand-side” revenue as a share of all revenues is associated with differences in efficiency, by type of college or university and over time. This is an empirical study, relying on quantitative analysis of campus-level information to explore the associations of interest. The study extends conventional measures of instructional efficiency, both by attributing portions of resources in student services, academic support and institutional support to …

Kangaroo Care Education For Low Socioeconomic Status Families In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit., Joara Peterson Jan 2023

Kangaroo Care Education For Low Socioeconomic Status Families In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit., Joara Peterson

Nursing | Senior Theses

The early contact between mother and baby is known as skin-to-skin, also referred to as “kangaroo care” (KC). It involves placing the baby on the mother’s chest as soon as it is appropriate (Thompson et al., 1979). This interaction was primarily for bonding but many researchers have discovered additional benefits. There is significant correlation between kangaroo care and weight gain (especially for low birth weight infants), as well as body temperature and heart rate regulation, which reduces the risk of medical complications. It also decreases levels of stress in mothers and babies by lowering the release of cortisol hormone (Mohammadi …

The Digital Divide: The Path Towards Digital Inclusivity, Angelica Gonzalez Almanza Jan 2023

The Digital Divide: The Path Towards Digital Inclusivity, Angelica Gonzalez Almanza

Social Justice | Senior Theses

The gap between those Americans who use or have access to ICTs and those who do not is referred to as the digital divide (PACEs, 2002). The pandemic has increased dependence on technology and exacerbated the digital divide, which perpetuates existing systems of racism and poverty (Early et al., 2021). In this study, a mixed-method approach was conducted to understand what digital literacy skills parents need to overcome the digital divide and support their child's education. Specifically, the study explored how the program Impact Technology training has affected parents' involvement with their child's education. There were 175 Latinx parents that …

The Proactive Model: How To Better Protect The Right To Special Education For Incarcerated Youth, John Bignotti Jan 2023

The Proactive Model: How To Better Protect The Right To Special Education For Incarcerated Youth, John Bignotti

Indiana Law Journal

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) guarantees access to a specialized, appropriate public education for youth with disabilities in the United States. While progress has been made and this right to education extends to incarcerated youth as well as those outside the juvenile justice system, there is nonetheless a fundamental limitation on how this federal requirement is imposed in the carceral context: it is enforced through primarily reactive mechanisms. Lawsuits, state compliance regimes, and consent decrees can hold states and juvenile facilities accountable after systemic failures to comply with the IDEA; however, the inherent inconsistency and slow pace of …

Identifying Supervision And Training Needs Within A Native American Reservation Co-Occurring Treatment Program, Jennifer Jones Jan 2023

Identifying Supervision And Training Needs Within A Native American Reservation Co-Occurring Treatment Program, Jennifer Jones

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Native American rural communities are not without substance abuse treatment needs; however, highly skilled mental health providers are often limited on a reservation, which leaves this population with clinicians with less experience and education. This project is a case study of a substance abuse treatment program within a Native American tribe in the western portion of the United States. The practice-focused research questions directly related to the training, certification, and education of staff in the addiction field, and to the ways in which the program evaluated the efficiency and effectiveness of the staff members. The purpose of this study was …

Justice That Heals: Transforming Discipline In Schools Through Restorative Practices, Sophia Diomande Jan 2023

Justice That Heals: Transforming Discipline In Schools Through Restorative Practices, Sophia Diomande

CMC Senior Theses

Discipline is not simply a tool but a weapon — one that American educators have wielded for generations to regulate children and enforce habits of self-control and accountability. In a world where institutionalized forms of discrimination continue to plague judicial and educational systems alike, vis-à-vis the school-to-prison pipeline, the question must be asked: When does discipline stray beyond its intended purpose and into the realm of punishment? This thesis discusses the historical and contemporary implications of punitive discipline and its effects on students, particularly students of color and disabled students. Retributive policies such as suspensions, expulsions, physical restraint, and seclusions …

From Equality To Equity: California K-12 School District Funding Since Proposition 13, Julian Amaya Jan 2023

From Equality To Equity: California K-12 School District Funding Since Proposition 13, Julian Amaya

CMC Senior Theses

This paper addresses the relationship between Proposition 13 and public school funding in California. Proposition 13 capped local property tax increases at one percent and reset property value assessments to the 1975-76 level. Proposition 13 decreased local property tax revenues and limited the ability of local governments to raise taxes going forward. Proposition 13 has been widely criticized for its effects on the local and state financial system, and the adverse effects it had on the ability of the state to provide public services such as education. Proposition 13 passed by a vote of 65 percent to 35 percent, and …

Gender Career Stereotypes, Implicit Bias, And Occupational Therapy, Laura H. Vanpuymbrouck, Carli Friedman Jan 2023

Gender Career Stereotypes, Implicit Bias, And Occupational Therapy, Laura H. Vanpuymbrouck, Carli Friedman

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Implicit (unconscious) gender bias and stereotypes can affect clinical decisions and interactions between healthcare professionals, as well as impact careers. However, there is no research exploring the implicit gender bias or stereotypes of occupational therapy students or practitioners. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the gender-career bias of occupational therapy students. To do so, occupational therapy students (n = 54) from three Midwestern United States graduate occupational therapy programs completed the gender-career attitudes implicit association test (IAT) – biases associating women with family, and men with career – as well as a survey polling demographic information. …
