Consultant Effectiveness And Treatment Acceptability: An Examination Of Consultee Requests And Consultant Responses., Dinah Stuart Graham Jan 1995

Consultant Effectiveness And Treatment Acceptability: An Examination Of Consultee Requests And Consultant Responses., Dinah Stuart Graham

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Consultation is a process whereby a consultant (e.g., a psychologist) works with a direct caregiver (e.g., a teacher) to provide services to a client (e.g., a child). There has emerged a very strong supposition in the literature and in practice that consultation be a collaborative venture between co-equal professionals. Although a collaborative approach has been generally assumed beneficial, an emerging body of research is calling this into question. Further explication of the collaborative process is needed. Commonly held notions of "collaborative behavior" and "expert behavior" may be misleading, or inaccurate. This study was designed to elucidate the collaborative process. Teachers …

Caring Communication: Strategies And Skills For Health Professionals, Tony Hussey, Michael Finn, Yvonne Hauck Jan 1995

Caring Communication: Strategies And Skills For Health Professionals, Tony Hussey, Michael Finn, Yvonne Hauck

Research outputs pre 2011

Over the last 15 years, the teaching of professional interpersonal communication skills has become well established within the curriculum for most health professionals. Recognition is thereby given to the significance of interpersonal communication skills in professional practice. One of the challenges in teaching and learning in this area of skill is the recognition and analysis of examples of both good and bad practice. This package provides a number of such examples.

The package consists of 33 vignettes in health care settings. These vignettes variously depict skills or groups of skills, illustrate negative and dysfunctional communication behaviours and, through the print …

Lessons Learned From A Community-Based Distribution Programme In Rural Bihar, S. Parveen, M.E. Khan, John Townsend, Bella C. Patel Jan 1995

Lessons Learned From A Community-Based Distribution Programme In Rural Bihar, S. Parveen, M.E. Khan, John Townsend, Bella C. Patel

Reproductive Health

The state of Bihar in North India ranks near the bottom of the Indian states in terms of its demographic situation. The infant mortality rate as of 1991 was 69 per 1,000, and the contraceptive prevalence rate as of 1990 was 26 percent. Bihar ranks near the bottom among other states of India in almost all indicators of social and economic development. One reason for its low performance is weak management. Besides poverty, a poor communications network and lack of proper infrastructure further make the implementation of programs difficult. Workers have misconceptions about FP methods, and educational activities are poorly …

Interest Group Influence On Sex Education Policy In Utah: A Cultural Perspective, Thomas H Terry

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A case study of Utah's sex education debate of the late 1980s and early 1990s is the vehicle used to study the education and social policy process of Utah. Interest group influence is tested, and Utah history and Mormon sexual culture are discussed. The influence of historical and cultural forces on policy, through the medium of interest groups, is explored. Strong indications of group influence are revealed and groups are found to be representative of dissimilar, competing cultures in Utah. Migration is found to play a key role in social conflict in Utah.

Linguistic And Cultural Immersion And Second Language Acquisition: International Young Student Exchange., Rosita Mira Maristany Jan 1995

Linguistic And Cultural Immersion And Second Language Acquisition: International Young Student Exchange., Rosita Mira Maristany

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The trend in foreign language learning reflects a move from "fragmented" language to "whole" language (Rigg 1991). It includes the individual as well as the social aspect of language acquisition; and the integration of language and culture. Student international exchange programs provide the ideal atmosphere for "whole" language learning and the integration of language and culture in total language and cultural immersion. Most research in international student exchange programs described the organization of the program or addressed a particular variable. There is a need for integrative "whole" research rather than "fragmented" research. The method chosen as most appropriate for this …

The Contextual Interference Effect In Learning Parameters Of The Generalized Motor Program., Hiroshi Sekiya

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Four experiments examined the generalizability of the contextual interference (CI) effect. In all experiments, to examine the locus of the CI effect measures assessing generalized motor program (GMP) learning and parameter learning were used in addition to a measure of general performance. In the first two experiments, variations of a timing tapping task, which were controlled by either different GMPs (Experiment 1) or the same GMP (Experiment 2), were learned under either blocked (low CI) or serial (high CI) practice. The CI effect was found for the general performance measure regardless of the task characteristics, contrary to Magill and Hall's …

Acquaintance Rape, Thomas A. Paulsen Jan 1995

Acquaintance Rape, Thomas A. Paulsen

Graduate Research Papers

Most people associate rape with strangers. More women fear being raped by a stranger than by an acquaintance and authorities are more likely to respond to reports of stranger rape than acquaintance rape (Abbey, 1991). Sexual aggression in dating situations, commonly called date rape or acquaintance rape, is more common and more serious than is often realized. Acquaintance rape occurs when the assailant and the victim know one another and is four times more likely to occur than stranger rape (Warshaw, 1988).
