Teaching To Think, Felicity Haynes
Teaching To Think, Felicity Haynes
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Given that a devolved curriculum empowers a teacher to educate for change, and indeed encourages cross curricular critical and creative thinking, this article offers a broad review of three current strategies for helping anyone to think critically and creatively instruction in formal logic, training in focusing attention, and creating a community of inquiry. It concludes that the latter is the preferred mode of teaching thinking for understanding and responsibility, both in schools and in pre service teacher education, because it captures the best balance between student engagement, the presentation of external social standards and the need for ongoing reflection on …
Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Teaching/Learning Processes In Classrooms: How Close Is The Partnership?, Robert G. Barker, Wally Moroz
Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Teaching/Learning Processes In Classrooms: How Close Is The Partnership?, Robert G. Barker, Wally Moroz
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
As Hornstein observed in the beginning of the 1990s, the "enduring pattern" of instruction in social studies lessons is that which revolves around traditional "teacher centred and text-centred" teaching strategies (Hornstein, 1990). However, other research programs which have investigated the status of social studies (Cuban, 1991; Good and Harmon, 1987; Haladyna, Shaughnessy and Redsun, 1982a) have indicated that the core subject rates well with students when teaching strategies are interactive, inductive, and student centred. As Hutchens (1993) found, students became "hooked" on social studies when it involved cooperative learning, and student research strategies. In 1995, Moroz, Baker and McDonald, reported …
Practice Teaching In Remote Aboriginal Communities: The Need For Adaptation To The Social And Cultural Context, Gary Partington
Practice Teaching In Remote Aboriginal Communities: The Need For Adaptation To The Social And Cultural Context, Gary Partington
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
As part of the teacher education program at Edith Cowan University, a small group of student teachers experience teaching practice in remote Aboriginal communities. In this paper, student teacher perceptions of their experiences on such a practice are presented to illustrate the influence of the practice on their views about teaching Aboriginal children. Through an investigation of journals written during the practice, it is apparent that students had considerable difficulty adapting their teaching to the context in which they were working, particularly in relation to the different cultural and social demands of the situation.

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine whether personal variables including age, gender, length of correctional work experience, years ofEducation, and work locus of control predict levels of critical incident stress among correctional officers. Fifty-two federal correctional officers completed: (a) the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (Weiss & Marmar, 1997) to measure critical incident stress, (b) the Work Locus Control Scale (Spector, 1988) to measure work locus of control, and (c) a demographic questionnaire. The instruments were distributed at the work place, and completion was encouraged during duty hours. Correlation and multiple regression analyses were conducted. The personal variables tested, …

Self-Efficacy As Described In Bandura's Social Learning Theory Among Boys With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Michelle Beabout Viro
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated self-efficacy as described in Bandura's social learning theory and how it applies among boys with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The Student Self-Concept Scale (SSCS) (Gresham, Elliott, & Evans-Rernandez, 1993) was administered to assess the degree to which boys with ADHD differed from a standardized national sample of boys with respect to self-efficacy as outlined in Bandura's social learning theory. In addition, self-efficacy of third to sixth grade boys with ADHD and seventh to twelfth grade boys with ADHD was compared to determine whether self-efficacy differed in the two age groups, and the direction of the difference. …

Relationships Between Selected Environmental Characteristics, Neighborhood Type, And School Achievement, Franklin Titus Iii
Relationships Between Selected Environmental Characteristics, Neighborhood Type, And School Achievement, Franklin Titus Iii
Student Work
The primary purpose of this study was to determine if neighborhood and school type help to predict 4th and 6th grade academic achievement above and beyond traditional socioeconomic status (SES) indices. A second purpose was to determine whether the findings of environmental effects research for smaller-size cities differ from studies which investigate larger urban centers. The study also sought to identify potential ways neighborhoods could be meaningfully classified in ways that might aid future research, and the possible presence of schools that succeed despite a profile that says they should not. Achievement test results of schools (N=61) from two Midwest …

When the Supreme Court applied "strict scrutiny" to federal race-based affirmative action programs in Adarand Constructors, Inc. v. Pena (1995), it suggested that the constitutional-law coast remains clear for affirmative action programs based on relative economic disadvantage - usually called "class-based" affirmative action. "Class, not race" is a conservative war cry in …

The Sisters Of Charity In Cincinnati: 1829–1852, Judith Metz S.C.
Vincentian Studies
The Sisters of Charity arrived in Cincinnati in 1829 to establish a girls’ school and an orphanage at the bishop’s request. Both were named for Saint Peter and the school “was the first permanently established free school in Ohio.” Detailed history is given for these institutions, which grew constantly. The Sisters served hundreds of Catholic and Protestant children throughout the years. They also ran a boys’ orphanage for a short time until community policy changed, and they were nurses during several cholera epidemics. They “help[ed] to pioneer the growth of the Church in Ohio,” ministered despite anti-Catholic prejudice, and formed …

The educational model and the teaching methods used at Saint Joseph’s are discussed, and questions for reflection are offered to today’s educators. The Sisters’ works outside Emmitsburg are also mentioned.
