This applied dissertation describes the attendance problems of students at Wellborn High School. Wellborn High School is 1 of 7 high schools in the Calhoun County School District. Located in a community with a high poverty rate and limited employment opportunities, the school has the highest percentage of truancy of 7th-, 8th-, and 9th-grade students in the district. Many parents of this community do not value education; therefore, they are indifferent to enforcing the attendance policy of the school district.
A review of selected literature was conducted to identify causes of truancy. After identification of many characteristics of truancy and …

The Use Of Problem-Based Learning In Graduate Programs Of Higher Education, Lisa Ann Edler
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study was intended to discover what Problem-Based Learning (PBL) looks like in graduate departments of higher education according to faculty who use PBL methodology in their curriculum and graduate students who experience PBL in their courses. This study also attempted to further understand the advantages, disadvantages, and challenges of PBL as perceived by both faculty and graduate students; After a comprehensive review of literature, two surveys were constructed, one for faculty and one for graduate students. The questions for both surveys were composed based on the information gleaned from the review of literature. The American Association of Higher Education …

It has been documented that there are multiple ways to offer teacher preparation course work. Incorporating technology into teacher preparation programs using Web-based instruction may help address obstacles involving distance and time. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of using Web-based instruction as an appropriate method for disseminating information and teaching undergraduates in the college of education about appropriate teaching practices for students with disabilities. Data were collected to answer three specific research questions related to student achievement, student satisfaction, and quality and quantity of discussions; There were 44 undergraduate participants in the study who were …

A Comprehensive Overview Of Introduction To Clinical Medicine Courses And Course Directors, Linda A. Deloney
Theses and Dissertations
The knowledge, skills, and attitudes basic to medical practice are introduced and taught in medical school courses that are often called Introduction to Clinical Medicine (ICM). This study provided an updated overview of ICM courses and discussed changes that have occurred during the past decade. In addition, this study developed a profile of ICM course directors, an area that had not been investigated previously. The observational, cross-sectional study utilized a quantitative design and web-based surveys. Two survey instruments were adapted from previous studies, authored using Questionmark Perception software, and e-mailed to curriculum contacts in all member schools of the Association …

Children And Family Values : A Critical Appraisal Of 'Family' In Schools, Rowena Alexandra Passy
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Prompted by the Labour government's proposal to introduce education on family relationships into the National Curriculum, this research project was set up to investigate how teachers portrayed 'family' within the classroom and the reactions that children had to the images that were presented. The intention was to highlight any problems that might arise from including 'family' into the formal curriculum. The fieldwork was conducted in three primary and three secondary schools. Two of each of the schools were located in the West Country and the remaining two, in order to give some ethnic and cultural balance to the project, were …

An important role of education – and the resultant accumulation of human capital – for a less-developed economy is to facilitate technology diffusion in order for it to catch up with developed economies. This paper presents a model linking education, the accumulation of physical capital and technological progress. In the model, investment in education and the accumulation of physical capital are complementary, and intertwine with the technology progress through related effects on technology diffusion and the expansion of the technology frontier. The allocation of effort to education, the optimal savings rate and the technology gap are endogenously determined in the …

When Urban Education Meets Community Activism: A Case Of Student Empowerment In New Orleans, Lisa Richardson
When Urban Education Meets Community Activism: A Case Of Student Empowerment In New Orleans, Lisa Richardson
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This is an ethnographic study of urban education and community development in the city of New Orleans. In New Orleans, as in all American cities, the public schools are at the center of local politics and the policies that affect community life. Institutions of public education have come under fire for failing to prepare youth to compete in the global economy. This is particularly true in urban communities, where schools serve a higher proportion of students of color facing greater incidences of poverty, underemployment and economic distress. As education policymakers and business leaders look to improve education, many of the …

Interdisciplinary teams were divided up in to three-, four- and five-teacher configurations. Data were gathered through the use of the district's School Information and Management System (SIMS) as well as the School Ethical Climate Index (SECI) (Schulte et al., 2002). The dependent variables were (a) academic achievement, (b) student behavior, (c) student attendance, and (d) student perceptions about community. Independent variables were the interdisciplinary team and grade level. All four research questions were answered using …

The writers criticize the U.S. invasion of Iraq and the ensuing military and political occupation of the country. They suggest a link between aggressive U.S. military posture and neoliberal globalization and contend that the current situation in Iraq is a metaphor for globalized capitalism across the world. The writers then consider issues surrounding the politics of organization in the search for a socialist alternative to free market capitalism and discuss how critical educators can reinvigorate the civil societarian left at a time when elites are less accountable to civil society than ever before.

This study examined whether students’ attitudes about community health practice, attitudes toward people who are indigent and homeless, and perceived leadership skills changed after participation in a planned interdisciplinary community health experience with an urban homeless or formerly homeless population. Data were collected from medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and social work students who participated in the community health experiences and from students in these disciplines who did not participate in this curriculum. The interdisciplinary community health curriculum and practicum experiences, based on the Community Health Empowerment Model (CHEM), were designed and implemented by a coalition of community and …
