Alternative Spring Break And Social Responsibility Is There A Relationship?, Judith Angela Biggs Garbuio May 1999

Alternative Spring Break And Social Responsibility Is There A Relationship?, Judith Angela Biggs Garbuio

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Humans are living in a complex, interdependent, global society. Violence by youth is at an all-time high, the school system is failing to educate students (especially in urban areas), and all of this is compounded by major economic and social forces that are significantly altering the fabric of our lives. According to Keith (1994) these forces include: “… the impact of technology and the globalization of the economy on social relations and the structure of work (Broyn. 1991; Mingrone, 1983; Offee & Heinz. 1992; Wilson. 1987); the depletion of non-renewable resources and the ecological crisis; the mounting pace of population …

Influence Tactics Employed By High School Assistant Principals In Attempting To Influence Their Principals, Brian L. Maher May 1999

Influence Tactics Employed By High School Assistant Principals In Attempting To Influence Their Principals, Brian L. Maher

Student Work

An important element of success in any managerial position rests in an ability to positively influence superiors. Nowhere in schooling is the need to be able to influence superiors more apparent than in the high school assistant principalship. Despite the similarity in titles, assistant principals are not principals. Their positions do not carry the authority of the principalship, and they-even more than a classroom teacher- are directly dependent upon the principal for job assignments, direction, permission, and support. Success in the assistant principalship requires a positive and mutually influential relationship with the principal. The nature of their work drives assistant …

The Implementation Of Learning Strategies In The Design Of An On-Line Medical Course Supplement, Lee Ann Hill

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Given the charge of integrating technology in the medical school curriculum, faculty members are faced with the challenge of designing new materials for their courses. Often, these materials become on-line resources such as hypermedia and electronic communication. Strategies may assist students who are unfamiliar with on-line materials to use such materials more effectively. This study investigated the elaborative interrogation strategy used in conjunction with on-line materials to promote more efficient processing of difficult material. Twenty second-year medical students volunteered to participate in the study. The course in which they were enrolled required the use of an on-line lecture supplement. The …

Place A La Litterature Dans Le Cours De Conversation!, Corinne Etienne, Sylvie Vanbaelen

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Social Skills Curriculum For Middle School Students At Risk, Eric Franz

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to develop a social skills curriculum for an effective After School Program for students at risk. Additionally, on site visit to an actual program in the Yakima School District were conducted. At-risk students have a high potential for dropping out of school due to the lack of motivation and other factors. Students at risk live marginally outside of the socially excepted norm for adolescent youth. School systems need to have programs …

Teachers' Concerns About Technology As A Classroom Innovation, Elizabeth Ann Stroh Jan 1999

Teachers' Concerns About Technology As A Classroom Innovation, Elizabeth Ann Stroh

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

American schools are rapidly introducing new technological tools to their staff members and students. Using both quantitative tools and qualitative strategies, the researcher undertook a case study at a small Midwestern school to determine whether teachers have concerns about technological innovations and if so, to specifically identify and measure teachers' levels of concerns about the introduction of computers to their classrooms. The quantitative data, collected from instruments developed by Concerns-Based Adoption Model theorists, revealed that teachers do have concerns about technology, and their concerns are most often centered in the self” domain. No matter how experienced the teachers were, they …

Alternative Teacher Compensation Systems: Practices And Perceptions As Reported By New Hampshire Principals, Bradford Wilson Craven Jan 1999

Alternative Teacher Compensation Systems: Practices And Perceptions As Reported By New Hampshire Principals, Bradford Wilson Craven

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine New Hampshire principal's perceptions regarding alternative compensation plans for teachers. Alternative compensation plans, unlike traditional teacher pay plans, are not based exclusively on years of experience and formal educational attainment. Forms of alternative compensation plans include individually-based merit pay, career ladders, skill-and-knowledge-based pay, and group performance awards.

This research was intended to provide a better understanding of how principals view the various alternatives to traditional salary schedules. An assumption of this study was that principals in the state play the primary role in formal teacher evaluations, and any new compensation plans that …

Towards More User-Friendly Education For Speakers Of Aboriginal English, Ian G. Malcolm, Yvonne Haig, Patricia Konsignberg, Judith Rochecouste, Glenys Collard, Alison Hill, Rosemary Cahill

Research outputs pre 2011

The project reported on here set out, on a basis of cooperation between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal investigators working in university, educational system and classroom contexts, to lead to understandings which would enable a more accessible ("userfriendly") education to be provided for students in primary and secondary schools who are speakers of Aboriginal English.

Specifically, in the context of schools of the Education Department of Western Australia, the project sought to:

1. extend knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal English and its areas of contrast with standard Australian English;

2. provide clarification in the following under-researched areas of Aboriginal English:

a) semantic …
