De L’Aliénation À La Libération, Alexie Tcheuyap Jun 2003

De L’Aliénation À La Libération, Alexie Tcheuyap

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This essay addresses the issue of education in pre and post-colonial Africa. It examines the ideological discourses, challenges and consequences associated with the adoption of western education in African countries. Based on novels and films, some of which are set in universities, the article analyses the effects of violence and irrelevant syllabi on African education, and argues that in order for knowledge to serve as a tool for real liberation, it has to be relevant to the social environment. It contends further that, paradoxically, even colonial education can contribute towards the liberation of Africans from some problematic aspects of their …

Liberal Hegemony - School Vouchers And The Future Of The Race, Harry G. Hutchison Jun 2003

Liberal Hegemony - School Vouchers And The Future Of The Race, Harry G. Hutchison

Missouri Law Review

This Article examines the school voucher debate. Because “the causes of poverty within the black community are both structural and behavioral,” and because the available evidence provides an inferential connection between education and poverty, I contend that the reigning legal and political theory as embedded in, and as explicated by the constitutional jurisprudence of the Zelman dissenters, and as exemplified by other commentators, fails to address adequately racial disparity and neglects to consider adequately the victims of the current public school hegemony. Hence, the legitimacy of much of the current opposition to school vouchers remains indefensible form an outsider perspective.

Consuming Government, Richard Schragger May 2003

Consuming Government, Richard Schragger

Michigan Law Review

In his ambitious new book, William Fischel, a Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College, gives us a new political animal: "The Homevoter." The homevoter is simply a homeowner who votes (p. ix). According to Fischel, she is the key to understanding the political economy of American local government. By implication, she is the key to understanding state and national government as well. Homeowners warrant special attention because "residents who own their own homes have a stake in the outcome of local politics that make them especially attentive to the public policies of local government" (p. ix). That is because local …

Cooperative Learning (2), Aziza Ellozy Apr 2003

Cooperative Learning (2), Aziza Ellozy

Faculty Journal Articles

An accepted wisdom in higher education is that students’ learning depends mostly on what they do in and out of class and not on what the instructor does, i.e. they learn best when they are involved in their own learning. This kind of learning has been coined “active learning”. The last New Chalk Talk issue (Volume 2, issue 2) addressed the subject of cooperative learning as a strategy that could be conducive to active learning when it is implemented properly. As mentioned, the three most important aspects of cooperative learning are the group, the task and the assessment. This issue …
