Descriptive statistics (frequencies) were used to describe research themes, sustainable agricultural practices, research categories, funds requested for research, origin of proposals, length of research period, research cooperators, and the occupation of principal investigators. …

An Ethnographically Informed Case Study Of An Art Teacher Using Right Brain Drawing Instruction., Sara Jan Smith Jan 1994

An Ethnographically Informed Case Study Of An Art Teacher Using Right Brain Drawing Instruction., Sara Jan Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The first and central purpose of this study was to identify and describe one high school art teacher's basis for incorporating into the curriculum right-brain drawing instruction based on Edwards' (1989) book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. The second was to provide art educators with preliminary information about the right-brain theory's popularity that might assist them in future research on a larger scale. Computer searches of ERIC and PSYCH INFO were conducted to locate related research findings dealing with hemispheric function. The empirical findings were analyzed and compared to rationales for employing right-brain teaching strategies. The research …

Computer Education: New Perspectives, Martyn Wild (Ed.) Jan 1994

Computer Education: New Perspectives, Martyn Wild (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

Computer technologies were introduced into educational contexts over two decades ago and while there is some argument about the extent to which computers have realised their potential, they have undoubtedly had a significant impact on education. A look into any school will reveal computers being used widely by clerical staff, teachers and children.

It is clear that computers are here to stay, but it is less clear as to how effectively they are being used in the learning process. Teachers not only need to use computers but they need to use them well, and in order to do this they …

Issues In Primary Mathematics Education Computers: Classroom Practice And Curriculum Reform, Lorraine Kershaw, Kevin Jones, Len Sparrow

Research outputs pre 2011

The advent of an interactive multimedia approach in teaching and learning has opened up yet another horizon to be explored in search of the perceived potential of the computer in primary mathematics education. Benefits promoted have included its use as a motivational aid, the developing of content knowledge and problem solving skills of children of varying abilities, its capacity to support an integrated curriculum, and to assist children in controlling their own learning. Many have doubts about the veracity of these assertions and disagree about the types of appropriate uses of the computer. For classroom teachers, software and hardware availability, …

Developing A Curriculum For Studies Of Native North Americans, Lynda Marie Means

Theses

The purpose of this project is to introduce, to a student at a University level, the Natives of North America. It is only through an in depth study of a people that one might truly know them and understand their ways. One way in which to accomplish this is through implementing a curriculum of North American Studies. The following is an example of such a curriculum proposed for the LCIE Program at Lindenwood College.

Chapter One introduces the reasoning and personal insights that brought this proposal to fruition. It contains personal background and discusses the need for such a class …

Does Caffeine Have An Ergogenic Benefit On Low-Intensity Exercise Performance In A Warm Environment?, Barry Steven Cohen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effect of caffeine ingestion upon endurance performance while walking at 45% VO$\sb{2\rm max}$ in a warm environment (27$\sp\circ$C, 48% rh) was examined. Eight moderately trained subjects (aged 21-25 years) walked on a treadmill on 4 separate occasions until exhaustion under 4 different treatment regimens. Two of the treatments consisted of caffeine-containing beverages, while the other 2 included non-caffeine-containing beverages. One hour prior to the start of exercise, the subjects consumed a GatorPro drink with either 5 mg/kg of caffeine, if caffeine was the randomized drink, or placebo (flour). At the start of exercise and every half hour until exhaustion, …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Multiple Visual Examples And Nonexamples Versus Prototypical Examples On Science Concept Learning: An Exploratory Study Based Upon The Concept Of Photosynthesis., Eleanor Deane Abrams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two researcher-produced, standard-length videos on photosynthesis (and accompanying ancillary materials) were developed with the input of educators and content experts. The control treatment video script contained the standard number of prototypical examples and graphics based high school textbooks. The experimental treatment video script was based on the theory of conceptual change. Two student focus groups met daily for one week and reviewed portions of the original experimental treatment script for clarity, brevity, and choice and placement of examples and nonexamples. Their suggestions and conceptual change have implications for curriculum design. The main research question of this study was: Do students …

Telematics In Rural Education : An Investigation Of The Use Of Telematics For The Delivery Of Specialist Programmes For Students In Rural Schools, Ron Oliver, Tom Reeves

Research outputs pre 2011

Rural students face many problems that do not necessarily confront their city counterparts. Education is a process that carries strong economies of scale. It is economical in instances where resources and facilities can be shared. It is very much resource based and much of the quality of educational programmes is derived from the resources and facilities that support the teaching/learning programme. This type of scenario makes it possible for a strong distinctions to emerge in the quality of the educational programmes received by rural and metropolitan students...

Of the 311 surveys mailed to superintendents, a total of 191 were returned. The responses represented 61.4% of Nebraska public school superintendents. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the …

A Survey Comparison Of Pest Control And Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators In Kentucky, Thomas G. Barns Oct 1993

A Survey Comparison Of Pest Control And Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators In Kentucky, Thomas G. Barns

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 6th (1993)

A variety of factors including increased urbanization decreased funding for governmental animal damage programs, and increases in some urban wildlife populations have resulted in a greater demand for urban nuisance wildlife control. Historically, this demand was met by Cooperative Extension Service (San Julian 1987), state fish and wildlife agency, or federal wildlife damage control employees (Bollengier 1981) These agencies provided educational materials, consultations, an-or physically removed animals. Recently, there is an increased demand for physical animal removal evidenced by increasing numbers of private Pest control operators (PCO), companies that do general pest or insect control work, specializing in the removal …

Hsp 72 In Rat Skeletal Muscle: Fibre Type Differences And Effect Of Exercise, Marius Locke Jan 1993

Hsp 72 In Rat Skeletal Muscle: Fibre Type Differences And Effect Of Exercise, Marius Locke

Digitized Theses

Western blot analyses of SDS-PAGE separated proteins from various hindlimb muscles from non-exercised control animals probed with an HSP 72 monoclonal antibody, demonstrated the constitutive expression of HSP 72 in rat muscles comprised primarily of Type I muscle fibres (soleus), but not in muscles comprised primarily of Type IIB/X fibres (white gastrocnemius-WG). In muscles of mixed fibre type, (plantaris and red gastrocnemius-RG) HSP 72 content was proportional to the percentage of Type I fibres.;Immunolocalization of HSP 72 in cross-sections from the soleus muscle demonstrated that both Type I and Type IIA fibres expressed HSP 72, but Type I fibres expressed …

Relationship Between Prosocial Orientation And Prosocial Behavior Of Preschoolers, Mark William Thompson Jan 1993

Relationship Between Prosocial Orientation And Prosocial Behavior Of Preschoolers, Mark William Thompson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study concerns the multidimensional factors influencing preschoolers' prosocial behavior. Comprehension of this complex phenomenon requires a synthesized, theoretical conceptualization. This study develops the concept of prosocial orientation to meet this need. Prosocial orientation is posited as minimally composed of four core variables: perspective-taking, empathy, moral reasoning, and others-concept. The position is taken in this study that higher levels of some or all of these four variables may cluster statistically among some preschoolers. The second issue proposes that preschoolers with a relatively better developed prosocial orientation (i.e., higher levels of some or all of the four variables) would also likely …

The package, which integrates HyperCard and videodisc technologies, allows for individually customized practice of two video-based oral tasks, description and narration. Drawing on Salomon's theories about the effects of media coding elements and perception of task on cognition and learning, the study used a 2 x 2 factorial …

A Sixth-Grade Literature Discourse Community: Making Social Meaning With Illustrated Literature During Interactive Reading Events., Elizabeth Lee Willis Jan 1993

A Sixth-Grade Literature Discourse Community: Making Social Meaning With Illustrated Literature During Interactive Reading Events., Elizabeth Lee Willis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The study focused on six at-risk students enrolled in the sixth grade at a large urban Southern middle school. These students, along with their classroom teacher, participated in two interactive reading events using illustrated trade books. The purpose of the study was to examine how these students used the pictures and text to create meaning for the stories. The two illustrated selections differed in story complexity, amount of world knowledge required for interpretation, and relationship of pictures to text (i.e., a close relationship indicated both picture and text communicated similar information, while a distanced relationship indicated one source provided story …

A Cross-Age Study Of Students' Knowledge Of Insect Metamorphosis: Insights Into Their Understanding Of Evolution., Mary Susan Nichols Jan 1993

A Cross-Age Study Of Students' Knowledge Of Insect Metamorphosis: Insights Into Their Understanding Of Evolution., Mary Susan Nichols

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Insect metamorphosis is relatively easy to explain at a superficial level, but a deep understanding of the concept reveals a complex array of interrelationships, most importantly those that address evolution. This is significant because, in biology, evolution is considered to be a central theme. Participants for this study were selected from grades 5, 7, 9, and 11 according to low, middle, or high achievement levels in their science classes, and to scores on a national achievement test. The research incorporated a three-level response strategy in order to ascertain more completely students' knowledge of insect metamorphosis, and to better suggest how …

Romanticism Reconsidered: The Implications Of Organicism In Educational Reform., Anne Burford Griffin Jan 1993

Romanticism Reconsidered: The Implications Of Organicism In Educational Reform., Anne Burford Griffin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to reconsider what has historically been called "Romantic" in American education. What I discovered was the ubiquity of organicism--an organicism which, when applied to education, promises to heal divisions with connection and integration. A reading of Romanticism as organicism is a traditional interpretation which fails to acknowledge the revisionist work of critics like de Man, Hartman, Bloom, and McFarland, who regard the Romantic recognition of language and self-consciousness as providing alienation, not unity. However, education continues to regard the Romantics as organicists and to provide organic remedies, such as the organic reforms proposed in …

A Study Of Time Orientation, Temporal Integration And Reading Comprehension: Back To The Future, Tacey L. Ruffner Jan 1993

A Study Of Time Orientation, Temporal Integration And Reading Comprehension: Back To The Future, Tacey L. Ruffner

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Problem. Lower-track high school students' combination of poor reading comprehension, present time orientation and shortened temporal integration is an area that has been identified in a range of divergent literature, but little studied in terms of educational practice. Previous research into time orientation and temporal integration has failed to investigate a connection with reading comprehension. Purpose. The purpose was to determine if there is a relationship between time orientation, temporal integration, reading achievement/high school track level and reading comprehension. Procedures. Two measures, a Time Orientation Questionnaire and a Cloze Test of Reading Comprehension, previously identified and pilot tested, were employed. …
