Education, Class And Gender In George Eliot And Thomas Hardy, Keith Ronald Jones Jan 1995

Education, Class And Gender In George Eliot And Thomas Hardy, Keith Ronald Jones

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the relationship between education, class and gender in The Mill on the Floss (1860) and Daniel Deronda (1876) by George Eliot; and in The Woodlanders (1887) and Jude the Obscure (1896) by Thomas Hardy. The Introduction discusses how, in nineteenth-century Britain, education was intended to "improve" individuals and society. The Introduction establishes the Marxist and feminist critical background of the study, and briefly surveys the nineteenth-century debates on "The Education Question," and on education for women.

The novels examined show education failing to 'improve.' Maggie Tulliver, in The Mill on the Floss, and Jude Fawley in Jude …

Using Drawing Tasks To Communicate Ideas About Photosynthesis: A Conceptual Change Strategy For Use In The Elementary School Classroom., Byron Levy Launey Jan 1995

Using Drawing Tasks To Communicate Ideas About Photosynthesis: A Conceptual Change Strategy For Use In The Elementary School Classroom., Byron Levy Launey

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It is difficult for a teacher to determine if a learner has acquired an accurate concept of the topic being taught. Most of the children in this study had sufficient language skills to communicate successfully with their teachers even though they held inappropriate concepts of photosynthesis. This study examined the use of drawing tasks to assess children's ideas related to photosynthesis in an elementary-grade classroom. Two research questions guided the study to determine if this strategy was a valid improvement over traditional methods of classroom instruction. The first question asked if elementary-grade students receiving instruction about photosynthesis would acquire and …

Monolingual Vs. Bilingual Education, Elizabeth Lara Jan 1995

Monolingual Vs. Bilingual Education, Elizabeth Lara

Honors Capstones

The following journal discusses the complicated factors involved with educating students whose native language is not English. The problem exists in the disagreement about which type of education--bilingual or monolingual--is most effective for the second language acquisition of these second language learners. Although evidence could be found which support both types of education, it is my opinion, based upon my classroom observations, research, readings, and personal experience that bilingual education is the most effective method of educating these second language learners. A main objective of this journal is to give the reader insight into the complexities in which a bilingual …

Lessons Learned From A Community-Based Distribution Programme In Rural Bihar, S. Parveen, M.E. Khan, John Townsend, Bella C. Patel Jan 1995

Lessons Learned From A Community-Based Distribution Programme In Rural Bihar, S. Parveen, M.E. Khan, John Townsend, Bella C. Patel

Reproductive Health

The state of Bihar in North India ranks near the bottom of the Indian states in terms of its demographic situation. The infant mortality rate as of 1991 was 69 per 1,000, and the contraceptive prevalence rate as of 1990 was 26 percent. Bihar ranks near the bottom among other states of India in almost all indicators of social and economic development. One reason for its low performance is weak management. Besides poverty, a poor communications network and lack of proper infrastructure further make the implementation of programs difficult. Workers have misconceptions about FP methods, and educational activities are poorly …

The Journey Of Making Meaning In Drama : A Case Study In A Metropolitan Priority School, Heather A. Timms Jan 1995

The Journey Of Making Meaning In Drama : A Case Study In A Metropolitan Priority School, Heather A. Timms

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Children with a low socio-economic background frequently fail within our schools. The school milieu is a potential contributor to this scenario, as schools are generally designed for the attributes, needs, and skill levels that are characteristic of middle• class children. It is therefore important to explore alternative learning frameworks that will enable these children to function within the school system. Drama offers unique and exciting possibilities in this field. Previous research endorses the use of drama in education for this specific purpose; and the theories propounded by learning and language theorists and drama educationalists provide a strong theoretical framework.

(1995) On The Theme Of “Teaching For Higher Order Thinking Skills”, Laurance J. Splitter Jan 1995

(1995) On The Theme Of “Teaching For Higher Order Thinking Skills”, Laurance J. Splitter

Collected Papers of Laurance J. Splitter

In my view, the “lower-order/higher-order" dichotomy has passed its “use by" date. If we examine concepts like “comprehension” and "knowledge" a-Ia Bloom, and even such a focal curriculum concept as “literacy", what we uncover are not single skills which are at some point on a “lower-order/higher-order” scale but, at best, complexes of skills ranging from the more, to the less, basic. To teach for better thinking involves understanding the complexity of “thinking" and of those many skills which comprise it. It involves understanding that the kinds of characteristics offered by theorists of thinking do not pick out a higher – …

The Relationship Between The Accuracy Of Certain "Generalized" Body Density Prediction Equations And Indices Of Fatness, Body Physique/Proportionality And Fat Distribution., Christopher Melancon Hearon Jan 1995

The Relationship Between The Accuracy Of Certain "Generalized" Body Density Prediction Equations And Indices Of Fatness, Body Physique/Proportionality And Fat Distribution., Christopher Melancon Hearon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There is a need to eliminate the least accurate of the existing equations for anthropometrical body density prediction and support for the use of specific prediction equations over generalized equations. The purpose of the investigation was to examine the accuracy of the Jackson-Pollock (JP) and Durnin-Womersley (DW) generalized anthropometrical body density prediction equations in relation to indices of overall fatness, regional fat distribution and body proportionality. The relationships between prediction accuracy (predicted body density minus hydrodensitometric estimate of body density) and three mass/stature indices (total fatness indices), waist-to-hip circumference ratio (WC/HC)(android/gynoid fat distribution) and the three components of the Heath-Carter …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effects of creatine supplementation on endurance and metabolism during high intensity intermittent exercise was examined using 18 males and females (age 19-26). The subjects were randomly divided into 2 groups (creatine and placebo) and the testing proceeded in two phases. During phase 1 both groups received a placebo. During phase 2 the placebo group again received a placebo, while the creatine group received creatine. Testing consisted of a several high intensity intermittent cycling protocols on a stationary cycle ergometer. Both groups performed all test bouts (in random order) in phase 1 and again in phase 2. Testing consisted of: …

Gulf Literacy: A Marine Science-Based Model Of Scientific Literacy., John Edward Trowbridge Jan 1995

Gulf Literacy: A Marine Science-Based Model Of Scientific Literacy., John Edward Trowbridge

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A trend in science education reform is the move towards the goal of scientific literacy. Attributes of scientific literacy include: (a) understanding key concepts and principles of science; (b) understanding newspaper articles and graphics related to science issues; and (c) using scientific ways of evaluating evidence for individual and societal purposes (AAAS, 1989; Demastes & Wandersee, 1992). Furthermore, BSCS (1993) has proposed a model of biological literacy that includes four distinct levels (nominal, functional, structural, and multidimensional). The Gulf of Mexico and its coastal environments are of social, economic and scientific importance. An understanding of the Gulf of Mexico in …

A Comparison Of Preference Responses Of White And African-American Students To Musical Versus Musical/Visual Stimuli And Their Relationship To Same- And Other Group Attitudes., Steven Joseph Morrison Jan 1995

A Comparison Of Preference Responses Of White And African-American Students To Musical Versus Musical/Visual Stimuli And Their Relationship To Same- And Other Group Attitudes., Steven Joseph Morrison

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It was the purpose of this study to examine the role of same- and other-group identification in musical preference decision-making and the relationship between preference decisions and attitude-oriented responses to hypothetical social encounters with same- and other-group members. Subjects were African-American (n = 189) and white (n = 280) sixth, seventh and eighth grade music students. To measure musical preference, each subject responded along a 9-point Likert scale to 10 instrumental music excerpts, five performed by African-American jazz artists and five performed by white jazz artists. The examples were presented according to one of three conditions: (1) music only, (2) …

Impediments To The Cultivation Of The Folk School Spirit In A North American Context: The Case Of Grand View College, Dennis Bielfeldt Jan 1995

Impediments To The Cultivation Of The Folk School Spirit In A North American Context: The Case Of Grand View College, Dennis Bielfeldt

The Bridge

In the 1995-96 academic year Grand View College will

celebrate its first hundred years of life. In anticipation of

this milestone, suggestions have been made to designate

1994-95 the "Year of Grundtvig," and to formally observe

with the entire Grand View community the influence of

the great Dane upon the college and its educational philosophy.

What, after all, could be more fitting for a college

whose most recent Academic Mission Statement proudly

declares its founding "by Danish immigrants who sought

to give the educational vision and ideals of N.F.S.

Grundtvig an institutional presence?"

Brother Brigham Challenges The Saints, Hugh Nibley Jan 1994

Brother Brigham Challenges The Saints, Hugh Nibley

Maxwell Institute Publications

This volume in the collected works of Hugh Nibley features the gifted Latter-day Saint scholar’s reflections on the thoughts of Brigham Young regarding politics, education, leadership, and the environment. Nibley has brought together a priceless collection of the early Mormon leader’s counsel to the Saints of his era—counsel that is still relevant today. Add to these prophetic insights the scholarship and plain speaking that characterize Dr. Nibley’s works and the result is an eye-opening and sobering invitation to reevaluate our priorities.

The timeliness of Brigham’s counsel on these topics will quickly become apparent to readers, as will the unique insights …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the degree to which conduct disorder and normal adolescents differ with respect to social interest as assessed by the Personal Trait Value Scale (Crandall, 1975). An attempt was also made to determine whether significant differences exist between groups with respect to manifest content of early recollections as assessed by the Manaster-Perryman Manifest Content Early Recollections Scoring Manual (Manaster-Perryman, 1979). Special attention was given to the manifest content of early recollections regarding early caregiver-child interactions, the subjects' perceived attachment to caregiver, and sense of security. Sixty male subjects participated in this study (N = 60). The conduct disorder …

The Deep Creek School: Technology, Ecology And The Body As Pedagogical Alternatives In Art Education, Daniel L. Collins, Charles R. Garoian

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The Deep Creek School is grappling with a cultural condition in which the line between actual experience and its simulation has become blurred as never before. Today’s students are conversant in the language of electronic media and consumer culture--but they encounter difficulties when trying to navigate the real crises in the health of their bodies and the global environment. There is a deep sense among many of the artists and educators that we speak with that art programs nationwide are not responding sufficiently to the dramatic changes occurring in the culture at large. The precedent of fitting programs to the …
