Umass Selects A New President: Elements Of A Search Strategy, Richard A. Hogarty Sep 1992

Umass Selects A New President: Elements Of A Search Strategy, Richard A. Hogarty

New England Journal of Public Policy

The selection of a new university president, an event of major importance in academic life, is usually filled with tensions on the part of those concerned about its outcome. The 1992 presidential search at the University of Massachusetts exemplifies such tensions. There were mixed reactions to the overall performance. When they finished reviewing candidates, the search committee had eliminated all but Michael K. Hooker, who, they deemed, has the necessary competence, vision, and stature for the task. The main conflict centered on the question of "process" versus "product." The trustees rejoiced in what they considered an impressive choice, while many …

Someone Shot The Rainbow: Emergent Writing Patterns Of Securely And Insecurely Attached, Inner-City First Graders, Cindy Matthews Jan 1992

Someone Shot The Rainbow: Emergent Writing Patterns Of Securely And Insecurely Attached, Inner-City First Graders, Cindy Matthews

Doctoral Dissertations

The mother or primary caretaker of an infant establishes a communicative bond which has long-term implications for the child as a symbolizer and learner. John Bowlby's theory of attachment claims the mother is the secure base from which an infant, and later the child, can explore and master her environment, develop a sense of autonomy, and relate to peers. Attachment theory sheds light on the process and products of inner-city, first-grade children's written symbolization, yielding many patterns cogent to the study of emergent literacy.

Fifty-nine first graders participated in a study involving projective measures of attachment and language ability and …

Silence (And Its Voluble Partner), Andrew Taylor Jan 1992

Silence (And Its Voluble Partner), Andrew Taylor

Research outputs pre 2011

Silence may traditionally have been golden, but how is it valued today? Can it survive the impact of a technology which can, and does, bring the apparently irresistible seductions of noise to the remotest parts of the world, and which invades the most reclusive aspects of our lives? And what place has silence in a culture such as ours which classifies it as "unproductive"?

But what is silence anyway?

Professor Taylor considers two ways in which, from the Romantic period onward, silence has been conceived. One tradition equates silence with Truth itself; the other considers it the condition which enables …

The Success Of Native American Students At Bennett County High School And Parent Involvement, Janet F. Varejcka Jan 1992

The Success Of Native American Students At Bennett County High School And Parent Involvement, Janet F. Varejcka

Student Work

The history of Native Americans has been checkered. No more so than in the history of their plight for quality education. The concept of racial inferiority was an excuse to push Indians from land they had always occupied. Native American men, women, and children were treated like animals.

Caregiver Education Program, Lesli Demers Jan 1992

Caregiver Education Program, Lesli Demers

Theses

Alzheimer's Disease is a progressive, irreversible disease of the brain. It is not a normal or inevitable result of the aging process. However, as more people live to advanced age, the susceptible population will increase, as will the number of people afflicted with this disease. Alzheimer's Disease presents a challenge by taking away the patient's ability to remember, as well as the ability to learn.

Alzheimer's Disease has been characterized by many professionals as "the thief of minds" (Gewertz 23). Memories of life experiences and even one's own family members fade away leaving the person a stranger to those who …

A Comparison Of Language And Graphic Products Of Students From Kindergarten Classrooms Differing In Developmental Appropriateness Of Instruction., Jean Germany Mosley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the ways in which kindergartners from more and less developmentally appropriate classrooms negotiate the process of graphic communication. Both quantitative and qualitative aspects of this process are examined. Eighty-one kindergarten children from four classrooms were asked to tell a story both verbally and graphically. They were encouraged to include drawing, writing, or both on their paper. Then they were asked to tell the story that they had produced graphically. The children were students in one of four classrooms from a single school system that were identified as: (a) most developmentally appropriate beliefs and practices; (b) developmentally appropriate …

Cosmology And Curriculum: A Vision For An Ecozoic Age., Angela T. Lydon Jan 1992

Cosmology And Curriculum: A Vision For An Ecozoic Age., Angela T. Lydon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The text of this dissertation explores interconnections between cosmology and curriculum. I believe the demands of an Ecozoic Age will initiate a reconceptualizing of curriculum. Further, I believe the particular cosmological perspective I advance can help us with this reconceptualization. Chapter 1 utilizes the multi-faceted insights of scientific, historical, and speculative thought. The texts used in this chapter incorporate an engagement with past cultures (Ong, Eliade), with contemporary theoretical perspectives (Munitz, Haught, and Stafford), and with a scholarship that envisions alternative futures (Bohm). Chapter 2 uncovers how modernity's relationship to the earth is rooted in the scientific, political, and social …

Autobiographical Amnesia: Memory, Myth, Curriculum., Gregory Michael Nixon Jan 1992

Autobiographical Amnesia: Memory, Myth, Curriculum., Gregory Michael Nixon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Autobiography in curriculum theory and practice is being more and more acknowledged as a major force leading toward the development of reflectively analytical teachers, reflexive practitioners, and discursively self-aware individuals. I look to two vital aspects of self-narration to explore. I speak firstly of memory, without which narrative continuity would be impossible. Memory is as involved with learning as it is with storytelling, and I would agree with Krell (1978) that "inquiry into memory and the theory of pedagogy go hand in hand" (p. 131). I eschew the models of memory provided by the behavioral sciences, empirical psychology, cognitive psychology, …

Educating Baby: Preparing Children For Future School Success, Jill R. Bergman Jan 1992

Educating Baby: Preparing Children For Future School Success, Jill R. Bergman

Graduate Research Papers

Parents generally are their children's first teachers. Children learn more in their first five years than at any other five year time period in their life. Ninety percent of all requisite intellectual skills are learned by children before they enter school (Disibio, 1984). "Some researchers suggest that maternal socialization, and teaching patterns in particular, are strong predictors of later intellectual and cognitive performances" (Moreno, 1991, p. 395). Therefore, parents play extremely important parts in the education of their children.

Questions addressed by the study included not only teaching strategies in use and their perceived effectiveness, but also exploration of common threads among nursing educators in their definitions of critical thinking, and common themes of "especially effective" techniques. The study involved a pilot of the survey instrument, utilizing one sample school's nursing faculty, with subsequent distribution to all 69 other ADN program senior nursing course lead faculty. The …

Canadian Federal Policy Towards Indian Education Since Confederation: Policy Making And Its Philosophy, Ling Yang Aug 1991

Canadian Federal Policy Towards Indian Education Since Confederation: Policy Making And Its Philosophy, Ling Yang

Master's Theses

Canadian Indian education is a complex problem in Canada's history. For the native people, education is the only way to preserve their cultural tradition. For the government, it has been the main means to assimilate the natives into the mainstream of the society. Because the majority culture has dominated Canadian society for more than two centuries, the Canadian federal government's policy and its making are the keys to understanding Indian education. Based on research in official records in the National Archives of Canada and field-research in Canadian Indian Reserves, this thesis shows that the federal government did not accept "Indian …

Age-Associated Changes In The Kinetics Of Ventilation And Pulmonary Gas Exchange, Mark Anthony Babcock Jan 1991

Age-Associated Changes In The Kinetics Of Ventilation And Pulmonary Gas Exchange, Mark Anthony Babcock

Digitized Theses

The purpose of these studies was to examine ageing effects on the dynamics of pulmonary gas exchange and ventilation during the transition from light to moderate work. In the first study maximal oxygen uptake (VO{dollar}\sb2{dollar}max), ventilation threshold (VeT), the time constant for VO{dollar}\sb2{dollar} ({dollar}\tau\sp\prime{dollar}VO{dollar}\sb2{dollar}), and efficiency were determined from a ramp forcing test in eighty-three males aged 30 to 84y. The results showed a decline in VO{dollar}\sb2{dollar}max with age of {dollar}-{dollar}0.037 1{dollar}\cdot{dollar}min{dollar}\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}{dollar} per year. The VeT also declined with age but at one-third the rate of loss of the VO{dollar}\sb2{dollar}max. The {dollar}\tau\sp\prime{dollar}VO{dollar}\sb2{dollar} increased with age; the older group (60+y) had …
