The Inner Game Of Teaching: What Is It And How Can It Make Us Better Teachers, Michael Schulist Jan 2001

The Inner Game Of Teaching: What Is It And How Can It Make Us Better Teachers, Michael Schulist

Education | Print Theses

The inner lives of teachers was researched and studied. Three key questions were the focus: 1) What is a mental peak performance state in teaching? 2) What is the value of achieving this state? 3) How can teachers attain peak performance states? Peak performance states are described as “a higher mental state” where teachers are motivated intrinsically; in this state, they are described as being “undivided”, their ‘truest selves”. Research shows that teachers are more effective when they achieve peak performance states in the classroom. Self- awareness and development of positive thought patterns are necessary skills for achieving optimum mental …

The Development Of A Valid And Reliable Instrument To Assess Constructivist Practices In Primary Classrooms, Bianca Herlihy Jan 2001

The Development Of A Valid And Reliable Instrument To Assess Constructivist Practices In Primary Classrooms, Bianca Herlihy

Theses : Honours

This study investigates the development of an instrument to measure teachers' constructivist practices in their classrooms. The Department of Education Curriculum Framework for Western Australia is based on a constructivist learning environment, and this study has sought to develop an instrument for exploring individual Western Australian teachers utilisation of a constructivist learning environment in their classrooms. While there are a number of studies relating to constructivist classroom practices, the literature review indicates that there is little research about actual practice in a Western Australian primary school context. The instrument was developed from an extensive review of the literature. Key theorists …

The Story Of Henry Adams' Soul: Education And The Expression Of Associations, Richard W. Garnett

Journal Articles

In several decisions handed down during its 1999 Term, the United States Supreme Court focused on the freedom of expressive association. Generally speaking, expressive association is regarded by courts and commentators as just another form of individual self-expression, and voluntary associations as facilitators for such self-expression.
/="/">
/="/">In this Essay, Professor Garnett suggests that a shift in focus, from individual self-expression-through-association to the expression of voluntary associations themselves. It is suggested that, in several recent decisions including Dale, Mitchell, and California Democratic Party - the Court has indicated an appreciation of the role played by mediating institutions in shaping …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to use deep time, that is geologic time as a mechanism to explore middle school students' understanding of the natural history of the earth and the evolution of life on earth. Geologic time is a logical precursor to middle school students' understanding of biological evolution. This exploratory, mixed model study used qualitative and quantitative methods in each stage of the research to explore sixth grade students, understanding of geologic time, their worldviews (e.g., conceptual ecology), and conceptual change. The study included fifty-nine students in the large group study and four case studies. The primary …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study evaluated the cognitive benefits and costs of incorporating biology-textbook and student-generated photographic images into the learning and assessment processes within a 10th grade biology classroom. The study implemented Wandersee's (2000) 20-Q Model of Image-Based Biology Test-Item Design (20-Q Model) to explore the use of photographic images to assess students' understanding of complex biological processes. A thorough review of the students' textbook using ScaleMaster R with PC Interface was also conducted. The photographs, diagrams, and other representations found in the textbook were measured to determine the percentage of each graphic depicted in the book and comparisons were made to …

Efforts To Enhance Stakeholder Communications In North Carolina's Wildlife Damage Control Agent System, Peter T. Bromley, Carl W. Betsill

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

In 1995, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) established policy and rules for handling of nuisance wildlife by Wildlife Damage Control Agents (WDCA). The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service (NCCES) conducted the training and administered the examination. The certification-training program covered principles of wildlife damage management, wildlife laws and regulations, humane handling of animals and euthanasia, human health risks from exposure to wildlife, professional ethics, and sources of technical information. Between Octoberl995 and March 2000,7 certification-training sessions were held and 289 WDCA's were certified, with …

Utilization And Integration Of Technology By Teachers: A Case Study, Dawn Shipley Basinger

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the learning process of teachers as they begin to implement an innovation. The research problem was based on the need to understand better the processes by which teachers come to integrate technology into their instructional practices. The Concerns-Based Adoption Model (Hall, Wallace, & Dossett, 1973) provided the conceptual framework for facilitating change in teachers' use of technology to support instructional practices. The constructivist approach to learning characterized the setting for the courses-Introduction to Technology for Teachers (ITT) and Software Applications, Teaching Methods, and Software Development for Teachers ( AMDT …

The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 2000-02-10, Wooster Voice Editors

The Voice: 1991-2000

On the front page of this edition of the Wooster Voice, there is an article discussing the vandalism of Kauke Arch. In typical Wooster tradition, students attempted to fill the arch with snow in the hopes of having classes cancelled for their efforts. However, some students took it too far and caused $12,000 worth of damage. In the heat of the moment, a group of students decided to leave some "surprises" for the plows, which included ripped up benches from around campus. In the pages that follow, there is an article about the Bissman Wrestling Federation's making it's debut in …

Gary Thompson, the director, was sentenced on January 2nd, 2000 for an alcohol-related arrest from the year before (December, 1999). Thompson failed a sobriety test after being pulled over for speeding on the way to …
