Effectiveness Of The Infusion Of Reading Component Model Based Remedial Reading Instruction On The Reading Achievement Of Students In Learning Disabilities And Title I Remedial Reading Programs, Sonja O'Lita Frantz
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study tested the effectiveness of the infusion of remedial reading instruction, derived from the Reading Component Model, on the reading achievement of children in learning disabilities and Title I classrooms. The Reading Component Model is based on the premise that the reading process is composed of two major components, word recognition and comprehension, and poor functioning of either component can affect reading performance. Remedial instruction based on the component model focuses and tailors instruction on the weak component. In contrast, the discrepancy model, a model that is predominant in U.S. schools, classifies students into two categories: those with …
Ec00-1879 Sorghum Ergot In The Northern Great Plains, Jim Stack
Ec00-1879 Sorghum Ergot In The Northern Great Plains, Jim Stack
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Sorghum is grown throughout Nebraska on approximately 0.6 million acres of land. It is grown as a forage crop as well as a grain crop. There is no significant commercial seed production in Nebraska. Grain sorghum is used domestically as livestock feed, in ethanol production, and to a limited extent as a food crop.
Grain sorghum is also exported to several countries. All sorghum hybrids (grain and forage) are susceptible to ergot disease. Ergot is a disease that impacts sorghum production directly by infecting unfertilized flowers and preventing seed development. Ergot also impacts sorghum production indirectly. Affected fields with honeydew-covered …

Notes Toward A Theory Of Dialogue, Grace Deniston-Trochta, Jane Vanderbosch, Ed Check
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Multiple dimensions of dialogue as pedagogical practice are examined in the following three essays. In the first piece, “When Life Imitates Art: Notes on the Nature of Dialogue,” poet and essayist Jane Vanderbosch reflects about the politics of silence and voice in graduate school. She analyzes how power and politics charge the atmosphere of the classroom. In “The Pedagogy of Dialogue: A Relation Between Means and End,“ Grace Deniston-Trochta focuses on self-examining the possibility of dialogue in a large “pit” classroom. She proposes teacher as listener/learner, a teacher who is self-reflective and respectful. In the final essay, “Managing the Silence …

This qualitative multiple case study explored factors which contribute to the implementation of technology in elementary schools. This research had a phenomenological focus because there was a concentration on the structure and essence of the experiences of the teachers and leaders in the phenomenon, the implementation of technology in the school. The four schools chosen for the study were judged to have outstanding technology implementation by state technology leaders and a researcher screening process. They were selected because the researcher determined that these cases were the ones from which the most could be learned. These particular schools had ample technology …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this qualitative, multiple case study of 14 students in a metropolitan public school in the Deep South was to find out, during a period of three months, what these kindergarten-aged children knew about birds, whether this knowledge represented current scientific thought, if such science instruction meaningfully affected their prior knowledge, and if so, what the factors during instruction that seemed to influence their understanding of the concept of bird were. The research was conducted in three phases; preinstruction interviews, instruction, and postinstruction interviews. The theoretical framework for this research was based on the Human Constructivism theory of …
Effects Of Reading Styles On African-American Preschoolers Of Disadvantage., Elizabeth Nowlin Witt
Effects Of Reading Styles On African-American Preschoolers Of Disadvantage., Elizabeth Nowlin Witt
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated the effects of two styles of storybook reading within the storybook reading event (SBRE) upon African-American preschoolers of disadvantage (AAP-D). One style, performance-oriented, was thought to be closer to cultural frameworks familiar for this population. This style was contrasted with the interactive style familiar to children of middle-class. Each style was utilized with two groups of five children (ten children per condition) across three storybooks, which were each read six times. Pre- and posttesting were used to determine changes in language (semantic and discourse ability, as measured by retelling), literacy, and world knowledge. A control group of …
"Awakenings" On Relational Ways Of Knowing: An Ecological Perspective On Curriculum., Elaine Kent Riley
"Awakenings" On Relational Ways Of Knowing: An Ecological Perspective On Curriculum., Elaine Kent Riley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The human species and all nonhuman forms on the planet, have co-evolved over a 14 billion-year process, yet many people operate as if planetary life existed to support and sustain human well-being alone. Separation, dualism, and power-over ways of knowing fuel a human-centered attitude which exalts our own species above the rest of the natural world. How humans will live with the earth in the next millennium (Hogan, 1996) is one of the most fundamental questions arising at the onset of the year 2000. The planet cannot sustain continued degradation of ecological systems stemming from depletion of natural resources and …

The Effects Of The Laboratory On College Students' Understanding Of Evolution: Implications For Conceptual Change., Lorna Benita Holtman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated eighty junior and senior college students' understanding of evolutionary biology concepts in lecture-only and lecture-laboratory settings. The evolution lab stressed the processes of evolution, and involved simulations, experiments, discussions, report writing, and reading. Test scores do not reveal everything about the actual process of learning in the laboratory. This study examined conceptual change patterns over a period of one semester using in-depth interviews with eight participants. The study revealed that the lecture-laboratory group performed better than the lecture-only group on certain shared items on the objective examination. The interview participants showed various patterns of conceptual change; that …
