Quo Vadis: An Integrated Direction For Catholic Media Technology Engagement, Eugene M. Gan Jan 2006

Quo Vadis: An Integrated Direction For Catholic Media Technology Engagement, Eugene M. Gan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over the years, the Catholic Church has explored issues of media technology and how it relates to education. At the same time, a number of profound, modern Catholic thinkers have wrestled with the nature of media technology and how it affects the human condition. These two threads have been independent of each other. An effective conceptual understanding of the role and meaning of media technology in Catholic education requires us to weave these two threads together to craft an integrated and coherent synthesis. The question I raise is: in a culture that promulgates the digital lifestyle as the standard and …

Using Comic Books To Motivate Literacy Development In The Classroom, Adolfo Real Jr.

Education | Print Theses

The purpose of this review of the literature is to examine ways of using comic books as a new medium to help increase students' motivation to read and increase their skills in literacy. Comic books are no longer just fantastical stories about superheroes vs. supervillains. They cover social aspects of current society. They make historical events come to life. They entertain, but can also teach. Comic books have a vast potential for classroom use. The intent of this paper is to identify methods to incorporate the usage of comic books into the curriculum, based on the academic level or grade …

Toward Eco -Citizenship: A Praxis For Empowerment, Penelope S. Morrow Jan 2006

Toward Eco -Citizenship: A Praxis For Empowerment, Penelope S. Morrow

Doctoral Dissertations

My teaching practice and research is about holistic education which assumes that, at some fundamental level, everything is connected. Holistic education is a philosophy, a worldview, that challenges the fragmented, reductionist, mechanistic and nationalistic assumptions of mainstream culture and education. The ultimate goal is to transform the way people look at themselves and their relationships in/to the world from a fragmented to an integrative perspective. This emerging paradigm can also be called ecological, evolutionary, spiritual and global. There is a growing belief that such education is fundamentally spiritual, in its search for wholeness.

Western civilization has been dominated from its …

Paideia: The Learning Of Values And The Teaching Of Virtue In Public Education, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 2006

Paideia: The Learning Of Values And The Teaching Of Virtue In Public Education, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

In public discourse about education there has always been conflict over the question of teaching values in school, and not without reason. But the civility of that discourse has now been stretched to its breaking point. The nation has become more and more deeply divided about questions of moral values and self proclamations of exclusive morality have become the standard fare of political warfare. While perhaps most ardently pressed by the “fundamentalist Right” in politics, polarization of positions is manifest on all sides. In light of the past four years of a presidency committed to a constituency that relentlessly presses …

The Constitutionality Of The Monkey Wrench: Exploring The Case For Intelligent Design, Johnny Buckles Jan 2006

The Constitutionality Of The Monkey Wrench: Exploring The Case For Intelligent Design, Johnny Buckles

Oklahoma Law Review

Teaching intelligent design in public schools has become an extremely controversial, and highly publicized, educational prospect that is just beginning to garner judicial attention. This Article argues that a proper resolution of the constitutional problems raised by teaching intelligent design requires both a precise understanding of intelligent design and evolutionary theory, and a sophisticated grasp of theological conceptions of the origin and development of life. After explaining these important foundational concepts and surveying the most relevant Supreme Court precedent, this Article discusses two important threshold questions that arise from the origins debate. First, is intelligent design theory inherently religious? Secondly, …

(2006) Changing Conceptions Of The Child From The Renaissance To Post-Modernity: A Philosophy Of Childhood, David Kennedy

Collected Papers of David Kennedy

In the eight essays that make up this volume David Kennedy offers provocative insights into what it means, has meant, and might mean in the future, to be a child. As we read him we feel the excitement of discovering truths that we want to think we knew all along. This book includes six essays on images of childhood and two extended reports on philosophical discussions he had with two groups of children. In each of those two reports on children’s thinking Kennedy interpolates his own reflections on the topics being discussed, on the methodology he is using, and on …

A Comparison Of The First Fifty Words Of Typically Developing Children To The First Fifty Words Of Typically Developing Children Exposed To Manual Communication, Emily Woodacre Jan 2006

A Comparison Of The First Fifty Words Of Typically Developing Children To The First Fifty Words Of Typically Developing Children Exposed To Manual Communication, Emily Woodacre

Master's Theses and Capstones

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the role of manual communication in the acquisition of the first 50 spoken words in typically-developing children. It was hypothesized that typically-developing children exposed to manual communication would have a different composition of their first 50 words compared to typically-developing children not exposed to manual communication. More specifically a greater portion of dual-functioning words and action words were predicted as a result of the visual and motor aspects of gestures and manual communication.

Twelve participants who were enrolled in a six-week baby-sign playgroup were involved in the study. Parents recorded their …

Teaching Bodies: Curriculum And Corporeality, Julie Garlen Maudlin Jan 2006

Teaching Bodies: Curriculum And Corporeality, Julie Garlen Maudlin

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

I began thinking about the topic of this dissertation at first in 2003 when I found myself expecting a third child while teaching full-time and pursuing a doctoral degree, and in earnest later that year at Bergamo, where I began to see a connection between my own interest in desires and bodies as they relate to education and the work of several of my colleagues. I began to think about the role of the body in the curriculum. Every day that we enter the classroom we bring our bodies and our desires along with us. We educate and learn from …

Procrastination, socializing, and employment were the most common goal conflicts reported by participants. Significantly more web-based students than traditional students were employed and were employed more average hours. Web-based students also had more children under the age of 12 than did traditional students. A significantly greater percentage of web-based …

Asymptotes And Metaphors: Teaching Feminist Theory, Michael Eugene Gipson Jan 2006

Asymptotes And Metaphors: Teaching Feminist Theory, Michael Eugene Gipson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As we move through our daily lives, the cogency of the world shifts and changes. Many constructs exist to explain and account for how we view and interact with our environment. Education is where our understandings become formalized and are challenged. To this end, a plethora of pedagogical tools are made available to aid educators in illuminating the world(s) around and within each student. However, there is always room for new ways of presenting information, concepts, and ideas. I put forth the mathematical trope of asymptotes as a new pedagogical tool. Asymptotes, as metaphor, work as a pedagogical tool for …

Telling The Stars: A Quantitative Approach To Assessing The Use Of Folk Tales In Science Education., Margaret B. Meyers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the impact of paired folk tales and science explanations on students in third through sixth grades who viewed program modules from the SkyTeller Project of Lynn Moroney and the Lunar and Planetary Institute of Houston, Texas. The audience consisted of over 3500 students in eight locations in the United States. Because few quantitative studies have been conducted to examine the use of stories in science education, the development of an instrument to assess students' attitudes toward science and stories forms a major part of this research. During the final stage of testing, the revised instrument and methods …

Citizenship Education In Pakistani Schools: Problems And Possibilities, Bernadette L. Dean Dec 2005

Citizenship Education In Pakistani Schools: Problems And Possibilities, Bernadette L. Dean

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

A critical aspect of education that is often overlooked or inadequately addressed is the preparation of school students for citizenship. This paper assesses the current state of citizenship education in Pakistani schools. It draws on the findings of two research studies: an analysis of the social studies curriculum and textbooks and a review of teaching and learning practices in schools. The findings indicate that the curriculum and textbooks do not distinguish between Islamic education and citizenship education and promotes exclusionary and passive citizenship. They also shows that while Pakistani students acquire knowledge and learn some important values in schools, they …
