Improving Pediatric Cardiology Consultation Methods By Introducing Digital Interactive 3-D Heart Models: A Proof Of Concept Study, Adam Verigan Jul 2007

Improving Pediatric Cardiology Consultation Methods By Introducing Digital Interactive 3-D Heart Models: A Proof Of Concept Study, Adam Verigan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of a pediatric cardiology consultation is to inform, or educate, the patient and family of all aspects surrounding a certain congenital heart defect. Consultation education methods and materials may include verbal descriptions, two-dimensional (2-D) heart diagrams, and take-home pamphlets. Because the human heart is a complex three-dimensional (3-D) object, the problem lies within the clarity to which these methods are performed by the doctors and understood by the patients and families. Therefore, during a consultation the cardiologist must a) possess the ability to describe a defect visually as well as verbally and b) ensure that the patient and …

The Media Production Experience: A Phenomenological Study Of Student Media Production In A Secondary Education Environment, Brian N. Saxton Jul 2007

The Media Production Experience: A Phenomenological Study Of Student Media Production In A Secondary Education Environment, Brian N. Saxton

Theses and Dissertations

Many media education researchers have pointed out the benefits of incorporating a production element into a media literacy program. In fact, the simple use of the word “literacy" alludes to both critical analysis of (“reading") media and creative expression through (“writing") media. However, many of those same researchers have found that there are serious difficulties with student media production from a practical standpoint. The lack of equipment, the lack of class time, poor educator training, and the possibility that students may produce school-inappropriate or offensive texts create doubts about whether or not the effort is worth the reward. This qualitative, …

Phonemic Awareness: The Nature And Role In Reading Acquisition, Toni Michelle Paganelli Jul 2007

Phonemic Awareness: The Nature And Role In Reading Acquisition, Toni Michelle Paganelli

All Graduate Projects

Phonemic awareness and its link to reading are a current topic in education. Research has shown that the two are interrelated and those students lacking in phonemic awareness are at a higher risk for reading failure. The terms phonemic awareness and phonics tend to be used simultaneously, but phonemic awareness is not the same as phonics. Children can naturally acquire phonemic awareness through their environment. However, children who are lacking phonemic awareness can be taught using many different methods and materials in the classroom. Within phonemic awareness there are many different skills. These skills can be tested using commercially produced …

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in the Classroom: Practical Strategies for Teaching to Student Strengths This project discusses the necessity of differentiated classroom instruction based on the educational and learning needs of students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). A student with ADHD can be inattentive, hyperactive, and/or impulsive in his/her behaviors. With consideration for these behaviors and actions, this project identifies appropriate classroom instructional practices, which are based on the modifications and differentiation necessary for teaching students with ADHD. …

Dewey's Concepts Of Stability And Precariousness In His Philosophy Of Education, Fred G. Harris Apr 2007

Dewey's Concepts Of Stability And Precariousness In His Philosophy Of Education, Fred G. Harris

Education and Culture

This article connects two of Dewey’s generic traits of existence—stability and precariousness—to four elements specified in his preface to Democracy and Education (democracy, evolution, industrialization and the experimental method) and one element specified in his preface to How We Think (childhood). It argues that Dewey’s metaphysics of stability and precariousness is implicit in his philosophy of education and provides a unifying aspect to his philosophy of education that is relevant to the modern world. The article then briefly looks at whether Dewey developed a metaphysics at all and concludes that Dewey did indeed develop a metaphysics—a new metaphysics of human …

Complexities Of Urban Coyote Management: Reaching The Unreachable, Teaching The Unteachable, And Touching The Untouchable, Robert H. Schmidt Apr 2007

Complexities Of Urban Coyote Management: Reaching The Unreachable, Teaching The Unteachable, And Touching The Untouchable, Robert H. Schmidt

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Urban coyote (Canis latrans) management is often complicated, but the technical portion of any management program is only one part of the equation. The use of lethal (traps, snares, shooting, toxicants) and non-lethal (exclusion, guard animals, husbandry practices, harassment) coyote management strategies can be successful, less than successful, or not successful depending on the appropriate match of technical skill and technology available in a particular situation. However, technical sophistication is only a portion of the management dilemma. Issues of policy, law, politics, and economics, as well as human values, attitudes, and ethics play an obvious and profound role …

Role-Playing In Class: Animates Discussion And Enhances Active Learning, Pandeli Glavanis Dr.

Faculty Journal Articles

As a social-economic historian by training I always respected and admired the work of the French Annales School and especially the way in which such historians as Marc Bloch and Lucien Febvre, among others, in fact brought life into historical research and accounts and practically presented vivid almost visual representations of life in epochs long past. They, dared to step into the bedroom, the kitchen, the salon and in fact into the mentalités of historical actors. In so doing these historians present historical events through the mentalitiés of those that lived them, but without fetishising the otherness of such historical …
