Incorporating Art Into Education : The Importance Of Teaching Creatively In A Standards Based Classroom, Monica Petersen

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Art education is an important aspect of overall learning and schools are failing to provide adequate art education programs for students. Eighty-nine percent of Americans believe that art education is important enough to be taught in schools, and still, art education is being allowed to slip out the backdoor without anyone asking why (National Arts Education, 2007). If teachers could incorporate art into the current curriculum, students would benefit and art could be used as a valuable teaching tool. An art resource packet was created for teachers in response to the interviews conducted. The resource packet contains information on how …

More Than Simply "Hanging Out": The Nature Of Participant Observation And Research Relationships, Julie Frances Simpson Jan 2007

More Than Simply "Hanging Out": The Nature Of Participant Observation And Research Relationships, Julie Frances Simpson

Doctoral Dissertations

Participant observation is a research activity used in qualitative inquiry, particularly ethnography, where the aim is to understand the meanings and experiences of social actors. Researchers employing this activity take part in people's lives as a way of learning about them and their culture, and to gain understanding of social life processes. Often these activities in the field are referred to as "hanging out": that is, interacting with participants in an uncontrived fashion as they go about their daily lives.

Participation observation is multifaceted: participant observation is conducted within the framework of scientists' own and others' life worlds; participant observers …

Voices Of The Poor: Poverty And Growth In Albania, Magda Tsaneva

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

This paper uses three waves of panel surveys at the household level to study growth and poverty in Albania over the period 2002-2004. It attempts to answer two main questions. The first question is directed at finding the micro determinants of growth and aims to expose the obstacles households face to improve their economic situation. The main focus of the analysis is to investigate the importance of health, education, and infrastructure indicators for income growth. The second question asks whether growth in Albania during the period 2002-2004 has been pro-poor. I find that there is some evidence for a convergence …

Once Upon A Time: A Model Literature Based Approach To Teaching Social Studies In Early Childhood, Kristi Louisa Martone

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to design an early childhood social studies curriculum that integrated the use of children's literature, to be used in early childhood classrooms. Listening to and reading stories about social studies topics helps students to see the importance of various social studies issues and will allow them to connect personally with the theme by completing a wide range of related activities. Learning By Wandering: Using Technology To Nourish The Spirit, Marie Martin Jan 2007

Learning By Wandering: Using Technology To Nourish The Spirit, Marie Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My purpose in this dissertation is to explore aspects of the nature of learning and to address the question of how to use technology in education to nourish the human spirit. To do this, I use a combination of critical and historical analysis. I reconnect first of all with my native ancient Irish culture. From this perspective, I gain an understanding of learning as a spiritual quest for transcendence effected through learning by wandering, and an insight into technology’s noble role in nourishing this hunger of the human spirit. I find that this vision is given historical expression in the …

The Learning Impact Of Computer Mediated Communication On Computer-Based Training, Mark A. Revels Jan 2007

The Learning Impact Of Computer Mediated Communication On Computer-Based Training, Mark A. Revels

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Trainee performance using computer-based training (CBT) may be related to the degree of interaction that occurs between trainees and the instructor, or between trainees and each other. This is significant in that the individualized nature of CBT (and perhaps Web-based training) is contrary to the social interaction needs of trainees. Using relevant pedagogical and social communication theories as a basis, this study employed empirical research methods on undergraduate participants to achieve the following objectives: to explore the use of computer mediated communication (CMC) as a surrogate for face-to-face interaction with CBT trainees, and to provide research-based recommendations for human resource …

The Influence Of Neighborhood, Family, School, And Student Dimensions Of Social Capital On Academic Achievement: An Integrated Theoretical Framework, Floy O. Scott Jan 2007

The Influence Of Neighborhood, Family, School, And Student Dimensions Of Social Capital On Academic Achievement: An Integrated Theoretical Framework, Floy O. Scott

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Current federal education law places the responsibility of the academic achievement of students with schools while ignoring other social factors that might influence the educational outcomes of students. Students are part of a complex social system that both enable and constrain their development and behavior. If we are to look at ways to improve academic programs, it is imperative we examine the different social systems to which students are exposed, including neighborhood, family, peer groups, and educational systems, in order to understand their role in assessing school accountability efforts. This study uses an integrated framework of social disorganization theory and …

A New Focus On The Social Side Of Literacy: Community, Play, And Heterogeneous Grouping In An After School, Student Publishing Program, Irene Helen Wellman

Master's Theses and Capstones

This qualitative study pinpoints the particular circumstances surrounding special teacher-created programs and projects, both in classrooms and in after-school settings, showing how such programs operate under social conditions and engage social processes not generally found in routine public school instruction. For that very reason these are able to include an emphasis on community, play, and heterogeneous grouping. The case considered here is that of an after-school student publishing program in the Northeastern United States, and follows the history and progress of the program. The program in this elementary school was created and organized to develop and extend student literacy. It …

Blackthink's™ Acting White Stigma In Education And How It Fosters Academic Paralysis In Black Youth, Kimberly Jade Norwood

Scholarship@WashULaw

Black students who attend school regularly, participate in the classroom experience — by either participating in class and/or turning in homework, take “AP” classes, and who perform well on tests are, not uncommonly, accused of “acting white.” This happened to me as a child, it has happened to my children and it has happened to black youth I have interviewed throughout the country. This Article explores the practice within the black community of blacks who attack — verbally and sometimes physically — other blacks simply because the latter perform well in school. The Article explores the ironies of this attack …
