The Greenhouse Effect: Common Misconceptions And Effective Instruction, Trevor W. Strickland

Physics

This study is an extension of the research of Dr. John Keller. It attempts to identify common student misconceptions regarding the greenhouse effect and investigate instructional methods of teaching the greenhouse effect. Dr. Keller developed a test, known as the Greenhouse Effect Concept Inventory (GECI), designed to measure a student’s understanding of the greenhouse effect. A central goal of this project is to investigate the effectiveness of this concept inventory at measuring differences in student knowledge of the greenhouse effect. In addition to the Cal Poly student population that participated in this research, we will be looking at the population …

Chemistry In Second Life, Andrew Lang, Jean-Claude Bradley Oct 2009

Chemistry In Second Life, Andrew Lang, Jean-Claude Bradley

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

This review will focus on the current level on chemistry research, education, and visualization possible within the multi-user virtual environment of Second Life. We discuss how Second Life has been used as a platform for the interactive and collaborative visualization of data from molecules and proteins to spectra and experimental data. We then review how these visualizations can be scripted for immersive educational activities and real-life collaborative research. We also discuss the benefits of the social networking affordances of Second Life for both chemists and chemistry students.

Frederick Gunn: Pioneer In Outdoor Education, Paula G. Krimsky Oct 2009

Frederick Gunn: Pioneer In Outdoor Education, Paula G. Krimsky

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

“In 1850, Frederick William Gunn, educator, prominent abolitionist, and outdoorsman, along with his wife, Abigail Brinsmade Gunn, founded The Gunnery in Washington, Connecticut.”

The founder’s name alone alerts the unfamiliar to the fact that The Gunnery is not a military school, but an eponymous reflection of a man and his vision.

He was a unique individual with a decidedly different view of education in the Victorian era, but he was not an egotist. The school was simply inseparable from the man, and to some extent, it still is. He left a lasting legacy to the institution, its students, the town …

Poverty: A Constraint To Sustainable Development Of The Niger Delta Region Of Nigeria’S Socio-Economic Resources During The 21st Century, John Inyang Oct 2009

Poverty: A Constraint To Sustainable Development Of The Niger Delta Region Of Nigeria’S Socio-Economic Resources During The 21st Century, John Inyang

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Poverty has become a major socio-economic problem in present day Nigeria. A disturbing observation about poverty in Nigeria is that it is on the increase, both in incidence and intensity despite the wide variety of national and international measures undertaken to eradicate it during the last three decades. The failure of these measures have been attributed to a multiplicity of causes, of which the most frequently mentioned and emphasized include: inadequate conceptualizations of poverty and development; failure to identify the root causes of the problem; lack of adequate organizational requirement for effective program implementation, wrong prescriptions given as solution to …

Using The Sixth Edition Of The Apa Manual: A Guide For Students, John H. Hummel, Mark A. Whatley, David M. Monetti, Deborah S. Briihl, Katharine S. Adams Oct 2009

Using The Sixth Edition Of The Apa Manual: A Guide For Students, John H. Hummel, Mark A. Whatley, David M. Monetti, Deborah S. Briihl, Katharine S. Adams

Georgia Educational Researcher

Teachers, school counselors, and educational leaders should learn, or become familiar with, APA style because of their important role as consumers and authors of research. By consuming and sharing the results of research in a standardized format, educators are able to efficiently share best practices to a broad audience which in turn helps other educators meta-analyze results and use those findings to coordinate their efforts in improving student learning. The sixth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2010) provides the means by which students and educators can communicate. This manual contains considerable information for the student …

The Not So New Turkish Woman: A Statistical Look At Women In Two Istanbul Neighborhoods, Mary-Lou O’Neill, Fazil Guler Sep 2009

The Not So New Turkish Woman: A Statistical Look At Women In Two Istanbul Neighborhoods, Mary-Lou O’Neill, Fazil Guler

Journal of International Women's Studies

Using survey data gathered from nearly 400 women living in two Istanbul neighborhoods, this article explores issues of work, education, family and feminism. In addition to presenting the findings we argue that there is a continued gap between the ideal of the Republican woman and the actual practices of this group of Turkish women. The picture of these Turkish women that emerged from this survey is that of women still largely in the grips of an ideal born in the early days of the Turkish Republic. However, it also became clear that there also exist rifts between belief and practice …

Second Language Teaching Strategies For Teaching The Human Body To Fourth Graders, Maria L. Vela Aug 2009

Second Language Teaching Strategies For Teaching The Human Body To Fourth Graders, Maria L. Vela

All Graduate Projects

In a country filled with pressure for high academic achievement at the state and federal levels, it is necessary to implement "best practice" teaching strategies for student success. "Best practice" teaching strategies are strategies that are research based and have proven to be essential in increasing academic achievement. Among using "best practices," there are a variety of programs that focus on teaching second language learners English, one of them being dual language. Dual language is an additive bilingual program in which the second language is taught through the content areas as the native language continues to be developed. However, the …

A Conceptual Integration Analysis Of Multiple Instructional Metaphors, Robert Johnson Aug 2009

A Conceptual Integration Analysis Of Multiple Instructional Metaphors, Robert Johnson

Dissertations

The present study was conducted to investigate some of the practical implications of conceptual integration theory for educators. This research was a mixed-methods study exploring how improvements in understanding—learning—(as measured by a selectedresponse assessment) are reflected in changes in learner language (described in terms of conceptual integration patterns). After a pretest with open-response and selected-response prompts, two groups of young adult participants viewed different videos of a slightly different review lesson in genes, genetics, and heredity, the difference lying in two different metaphor conditions: the experimental group was shown a more “metaphorrich” version of the lesson using two classic metaphors …

The Effect Of Music Education On Early Adolescents' Adaptive Skills, Health-Enhancing Behaviors, And Self-Efficacy, Kimberly Ann Root Wilson Aug 2009

The Effect Of Music Education On Early Adolescents' Adaptive Skills, Health-Enhancing Behaviors, And Self-Efficacy, Kimberly Ann Root Wilson

Dissertations

The present study investigated the relationship between early adolescents' participation in middle school music programming and behavioral and emotional functioning. Specifically, the association between students' music involvement and the practice of certain healthy behaviors (diet, exercise, seatbelt use, helmet use, and sleep), adaptive skills (interpersonal relations, relationship with parents, self-esteem, and self-reliance) as well as levels of self-efficacy was examined. Based upon previous research demonstrating positive effects of participation in extracurricular activities on the above mentioned constructs, it was hypothesized that similar findings would emerge for those students involved in school-based music programs. The development of health behaviors, adaptive behaviors, …

The Role Of Education On Awareness Of Ammunition-Dismantling Risks, Brunilda Zenelaga Jul 2009

The Role Of Education On Awareness Of Ammunition-Dismantling Risks, Brunilda Zenelaga

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The blasts from an ammunition dismantling factory in Gërdec, Albania, an accident caused by untrained employees at the facility, resulted in deaths and injuries and damaged homes for factory workers and nearby villagers in March 2008. This article suggests that training employers and workers to follow necessary safety procedures, as well as raising village awareness of the dangers of these ammunitions facilities, will help prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
